A TRIBUTE TO GRASS.
Poettc Eulogy That Watt Pronounced

Tho following tribute to gras3, writ

"Majestic, fruitful, wondrous plant!
Tho com triumphant, that with tho aid

plant, transmuted by the alchemy of
God, austaliis tho warrior In battle, the j

than tho humbler verdure of tho bill

the dead.
"Grass ls tho forgiveness of nature,
her constant.benediction. Fields tram
pled with hnttle, saturated with blood,
torn with the ruts of cannon, grow
green again with grass, and carnage
is forgotten. Streets abandoned by
traille become gruss grown like rura?
lanes and obliterated. Forests decay,
harvests perish, Howers vanish, but
grass is Immortal. Beleaguered bj' the
sullen hosts of winter, lt withdraws
Into tlie impregnable fortress of Its
Subterranean vitality and emerges up
on the first solicitation of spring. Sown
by ibo winds, by wandering birds,
propagated by the subtle horticulture
of the clenents, which are Its ministers
and servants, it softens tho rude out
line of the world. Its tenacious fibers
hold the earth lu Its place aud prevent
Its soluble components from washing
Into tho wasting sea. It Invades the
solitudes of deserts, climbs tho Inac
cessible slopes and forbidding pinna
cles of mountains, modifies climates
and determines the history, character
and destiny of the nations. Unobtru
sive and patient, lt has Immortal vigor
and aggression. Banished from the
thoroughfare and tho field, lt .ddes Its
timo io return, and when vigilance is
relaxed or the dynasty bas.perished it
silently resumes tho throne from which
lt has been expelled, but which It nev

Attacked by Huge Snake
Atlanta, July 10.-A epeoial to the
Constitution from Sylvania, Qa., says:
E. M. Henderson, who lately came
to this place from Greenville, S. C.,
had a thrilling experience with a huge
moooasin in his room last night about
7 o'olook. Mr. Henderson went to his
room after he had finished supper, and
was standing near tho bod when sud
denly he felt a peculiar motion about
his ankles. There wat* no light in thc {
room excopt that from a hall light the
the room door being partly opes, but
from this ho saw a giant snake wind*
iug itself about his left log. Ho
kioked and scramblod with tho snake
Ti iii ho finally landed it somo dis
tance from him on tho floor. The
reptile made for the lighted hall. Two
of Mr. Henderson's friends quickly
went to his assistance and the snake
was killed in the hall. It was a vi
cious anake aud the wonder is that it
did not sink its poisonous fangs into
Mr. Henderson's leg while it was coil
ed about him. How the snake carno
to bo in tho room is a mystery.

Will Roosevelt Run Again.
Now York, July 14.-Before Bailing
for London, where he goes as a dole
gato to the International Parliamen
tary Congress, John. Sharp Williams
gave it as his opinion that Roosevelt
would consent to run again.
"I think," said Williams, "that tho
Prosidcnt is planning . it so that he
will bo forced to make the raco. The
president reminds me of the old Lady
cf 8%ragossa, who hung about asking
when tho gentlemen wore going to be
gin tho kissing, as she wanted to be
?hero."
Continuing, Williams said:
"Tho ropublican party haB fallen
behind tho mark. Profuso in prom
ises it haB not lived up to its promises.
For ono thing, the party refused to go
into tho question of tariff revision QB
was promised. Thero is a fooling of
unrest throughout tho country and it
growing. A feeling of unrost always
acta to thc disadvantage of the party
in power.
Tho minority leader declared that
"Bryan is the logical candidate for tho
Demooratio party." Williams did not
say wheather be intonded to meet
Bryan in Europe. Ho denied tho ro
port that he had refused to serve on
tho Bryan reception committee which
will welcome tho formor Demooratio
candidate in Now York next month.

Atnorlcan sewing machines, oash reg

helped to make their introduction all
but universal.
