IK >l! \ IT< >S; TUESDAY EVENING .SEPT. I. Our Paper. —Our readers will perceive that our paper is eluted and issued two days in ad vance of our usual day of publication. This has been done in order to use one more effort before the election, in the good old cause of Democracy. Luscious Peaches. —We return our thanks to Messrs. Powell Sc Alison, for a box of most delicious peaches, from their rancho below Mormon Par. Fire. —Mr. B. F. Boss, one of our oldest residents in this County, met with a great misfortune on last Thursday, in having his residence entirely destroyed by fire. So rapid was the spread of the flames that nothing even of the clothing of the members of the family were saved, who were left destitute of house and home. Dr. Brockway was soliciting sub scriptions for their relief in this town last week, and wo are happy to learn that he met with the most encouraging success among the hu mane portion of our commuity. To the Democratic Voters of Mariposa Co. Iniporlnut Correspondence. By the correspondence helow it will be per ceived that the doubts (if nny really existed) of the propriety and legitimacy of the Demo cratic county convention of the 12th inst, are entirely removed and cleared up. After the failure of the convention of the Ist and 3d of August to make nominations for county offi ces the central committee could not have avoided calling a n* w convention without proving recreant to their duty and the party which appointed them. It is well known that the second convention was provided for on principles perfectly fair and thoroughly Dern cratic, ami in a manner best calculated to pre clude improper influences disturbing the will of the majority of the Democrats of the coun ty. The second convention was not calculated in any manner to interfere with the chances of any one lawfully entitled to a nomination, for no one can be so entitled unless with the sanction of the majority he purposes to repre sent of the Democracy of the county, and no better mode of obtaining their sense could have been provided than the one adopted by the late central committee. The cause of the rupture, adjournment and failure of the first convention arose from ina bility to ascertain the will of the majority, ow ing to the delegations of certain precincts being contested. It was only a question of counting noses, which the convention could not for the mentioned causes clearly and satisfactorily do. I low then under the circumstances could any true, sane, and relia blc Democrat object to a new convention? Now it is certain who favor the great Demo cratic doctrines of justice, fair play and the will of the majority. Upon the adjournment, nine dir , of the Dem ocratic County Convention, held in the Town of Mariposa, Mariposa County, on the Ist day of August, 1857, the Democratic County Cen tral Committee issued a call for another Dem ocratic County Convention, to he held in the Town of Mariposa on the 12th day of August, 1857. The power to do so was questioned by a number of the Delegates of the Convention of the Ist, when Messrs. Merritt and Worthing ton addressed the following letter of enquiry to the Democratic State Central Committee, and, received the subjoined reply: Mariposa. August Htl>, 1857. Messrs. Jo.-o:I’M I*. Hook, : I >*-n»t i«: Stale TiaoMT Foi.kv, [ Central Committee, R.C. I ’auk A oilier*. I Han Framing). Gbstlksikn— In consequence of local cau-es exist ing in oar County at this time, the Democratic party are so distracted and divided as to make defeat Inev itable, unless something can be done to reconcile the conflicting elements. For this reason, therefore, we write to g ve you a .statement of our difficulties, and obtain your opinion relative to party usages. Ac., be iieving that it, will have much weight coming from the State Central Committee. The Democratic Conven tion of Kir,, after making all nominations, elected a Central Committee f..r Mariposa county, of which Committee H. t«. Worthington was a member. Pre vious to Ist of August, IM7, tills Committee duly is sued their call for a Convention, to meet In Mariposa on August Dt. in which said call they invited the co operation of Merced Comity so fur as the nomination of Members of Assembly was concerned. Cpon the Ist of August the Convention met, and after the elec tion of Chairman and Secretary and reports of the Committee on credentials, the Convention nominated Assemblymen, one from this and one from Merced county. After this was done the Merced Delegation withdrew from the Convention. An effort was (hen made to organize into n County Convention for nom ination of county officers. This occasioned indescrib able confusion, in the midst of which, and without or gaui/.iug into » county Convention, a motion was made and carried to adjourn nine die. Whereupon the meeting was disbanded. Thereupon the old coun ty Central Committee deemed it their duty to call another Convention, which was done for the 12th « f August. This Convention met and nominated a Ticket. Now sirs, the question Is, did tills Committee have the power to call ibis new Convention? This power Is denied, on the ground that the office of the Cen tral Committee of 1856, expired on the assombing of the county Convention of August Ist, 1857. If so. the Democratic party was without a Central Commit tee In the county. This is an Important question, and we l>eg of you to give this your immediate attention, as upon it may de pend the success of the party in this county. M e therefore trust you will give us an immediate reply. Very truly we have the honor to ho Vonr Ob’t. Servants, U. G. WORTHINGTON, SAM b. A. MKHRITT. San Francisco, August 18th, 1857. Hon. S. A.
