DAILY NEWS TUESDAY MORNING, AUGUST 22, 1B?5. LOCAL MATTERS. - To oon City S?BscniBKBS.?Wo would bo thank x ful if there ia any failure on the part of our car , xicru to dchvcr tho Daily New?, if our city sub scribers would givo ua immediato notice. Every effort on our part will bo made to socuro an early delivery, Rnd if tho carriers fail in doing their duty, wo hope to bo immediately iniormed of it. WlLMIKQTON AND MAXCUESTKB RAILBOAD-W? are pleased to state that this road is now in con nection with Kingvillc, and wo return our thanks to Mr. W. A. Jobhon, messenger of Adams' Express Company, for Richmond, Petersburg, Fayotteville, nnd Wilmington papers, brought over by the firot train that reached that point. Manaoebs of Election.?A meeting of this Board was held yesterday afternoon at Masonic Ball, Mr. Chaules Love in tho chair. Several matters wero discussed, and vacancies filled. A committee was appointed to confer with the au thorities on all matters connected with tho forth coming elections, to report at an adjourned meet ing on Thursday afternoon next, at 6 o'clock. Jiuch unanimity prevailed, and many doBircs were expressed to have the election carefully and prop erly conducted. A Hot Dat_It seemed to ua that yestorday was particularly warm?nay, that it was the hottest ?day of the season. Every one we saw, every friend ve met, appeared to be suffering intensely from ata fiovcrity. Wo grumbled and fretted through the llrstpnrt of the day, until going into the low er part of the city, wo heard in a houso a tam borino, accompanied with "tho fiddle and tho Jtiow," and innumerable feet shuffling over the ?Boors. Wc paused, and moralized after tho man aier of Stebne: If pleasure, said we, prevents these people, in a close room, from feeling the excessive ?cat, why should wc, who aro in the shado in the open street, suffer it to annoy us merely because y>e have to labor? This did the business?we {prowled no more; but when we returned, we felt that our philosophy, if it had not made us a cooler, had made us a wiser man. AnnivAL of Tnoors.?The steamer Ann Maria, from Hilton Head, brought here, yesterday, Com pany E, of the 5th U. S. Artillery, under com mand of Lieut. Bbixexet. They will garrison Fort Sloultrie. ffCoLBORN, HowellA Co_We omitted yesterday, in our notice of this firm, tho namo of Mr. H. E. ?Nichols, who foruiB tho company, and is from Co lombia, where he has for years been the agent for many insurance companies, and where his position ?s a business man ?a favorably known. Cot timber in the country should bo brought to town without delay, By referring to our adver tising columns, ready purchasers will be found. Kestavbant.?Mr. Hexby H. Badexhop has epened at No. 135 Meeting-street one of the neatest places for refreshment in tho city. The Iront room of the establishment is a sales room for uegars and liquors in quantities, while the rear, which ?h as beautifully fitted up, is devoted to thoso who seize'pleasure as it fiiea during these days of heat. Mr. B. will be recognized as one whoso face was very familiar at the Charleston Hotel in days gone by. Handsome Fubxttube, etc_Wo call attention to the advertisement of a sale, thia day, by Mil xjoax k Sox, and suggest the attendance of all in want of tine articles of that character. See Acting Master Moxtell's card in special column. In LooKixo over our advertisements, do not fail to read that of Geo. W. Class & Co. Fayetteville News.?Wo have received a small paper with this tltlo, barely discernible, which, no doubt, ia quito interesting, bnt the copy received Joy ua ?a unreadable. We aro satisfied, from tho ?strong smell of turpentine which accompanies it, that it to genuine, and comes from the "Old North State." We dpsiro a better acquaintance with it. AuorjsTA, Ga.?Tho Constitutionalist, of the 16tb, gives accounts of robberies, thefts and outrages that arc appalling. Wo should certainly rejoice at our exemption from these rogueries to any extent, nnd thank our vigilant police for tho prevention. The Savannah Republican, of the 18th, mentions the extreme low state of the river, and the deten tion of steamers at Augusta in consequence.
