ST. MICHAEL'S BELLS.-In our notice of the sub?
scription list of St Michaers Church Chime of Bells,
we inadvertently made the cost of recasting them
nine hundred dollars, instead of nine hundred
pounds. The list ia at this office, and we hope will
soon be liberally filled by our citizens, that their
ears may once more be gladdened by a chime
equally as good, if not better, than those de?
stroyed.
Co JCT LI MEST AB Y SERENADE.-We were the re?
cipiente of a musical treat from MULLER'S fine
band on Tuesday evening, tendered by our friends
ofthat stalwart old Fire Company, the Palmetto.
While complimenting their President, who has
lately taken to himself one of nature's gems, a
wife, they remembered us in the loneiy hours of
midnight, and discoursed music sweet, to enliven
and cheer us in our labors, ind to cause us to
dream of concord and harmony with all mankind,
and the Palmet toes in par tic ular.

FIRE.-About half-past 9 o'clock last night the
alarm bell summoned the Fire Department to
Ward 1. On reaching the place, we found the
fire was in Elliott street, south side, near East
Bay street. The house is known as No. 5, and is
a three story brick building, belonging to Mr.
RICHARD R. THOMPSON*. No insursjice. The I
house was occupied by "three families," BO one of
the {odies informed ns, who herself mourned tLo [
loss of a feather bed, that had not been insured.
A Mrs. MILLER had charge of tho boneo. Noth?
ing was known certain about the origin of the fire.
The occupants averred that there had been no
fire in the house, except in the room bick of the
bar on the ground floor, and yet the flames were
first observed in the npper story or in the garret.
The several lire companies carno very promptly,
and worked with a hearty good will. The police,
also, was present in large force, and did efficient
service in guarding the premises, though, as far
as we could Bee, their office was a sinecure last
night, aB there seemed but little movable proper?
ty about there that needed guarding. Some
think the fire originated in the chimney.
r " THE YEOMAN, an Independent Organ of South
'Carolina Industry, Intelligence and Inquiry."
This is the title of a neat little specimen sheet, an
antepast, we feel sure, of many well-filled, reada?
ble columns. We like the motto: "Be strong, all
ye people of the land, and work." W. B. CAB
LISLE, Esq., tho editor, is one of the oldest jour?
nalists in the State; knows all the ins and outs of |
the trade; is a very good writer himself, and
knows how "to make up" a good paper. He is,
moreover, a fine scholar, a man of large reading,
and has enjoyed an extensive acquaintance with
men.
We have had the pleasure of frequently hearing
Mr C. converse on this new project of The Yeo?
man, and know that his heart is in it. We hope
he will meet with sufficient patronage to warrant j
him in soon entering upon the regular publica- j
tion of it. The paper addresses itself to farmers,
teachers, ministers, literary men, and the intelli?
gent of our community generally. Address W.
B. CARLISLE, editor.
FIRE AT DARLINGTON.-In our report of the fire
at Darlington we stated that the firm of Msssrs.
B. A. A J. F. EARLY; were insured in Charleston |
and Cheraw. "We are informed that the only in?
surance these gentlemen had was in Charleston,
with the agency of Vf. B. HERIOT A Co. for $1500; j
and that their loss was some $G000, not including
insurance.
PBOYOST COUBT.-G. H. Thomas, colored
Theft.-L HABENKTT testified that, on last Mon?
day, he missed a hat which he had hanging near
the door of his store, for sale, and anppoaed it
wa8 stolon. Richard Brown (colored) testified
that he was opposite to Mr. HABENICET'S store,
and saw the defendant take the hat and put it tin?
der his jacket, and then go off. Sentenced to a
fine of $10, or 10 days' imprisonment.
Willis Jones, colored-Breach of Trust_Mr.
HUGHES testified that, while he was sick a short
time ago, he gave defendant an overcoat to pawn
for him, which he did, and received $C, but he
never saw him until last Tuesday night, when he
said he had lost the money. The case was settled
between the parties.
The colored civilians, who were to have been
sentenced yesterday, have been sent for trial be?
fore a military commission.
MATOB'S COUBT.-A man who was intoxicated,
md had been beaten pretty well hy some soldiers,
ras discharged by the Mayor, he thinking that
he prisoner had been punished enough.
An individual who makes money by making
nattres8es, and who got 'rank on tick, was
ironght np to explain himself, but as there was
nore moss in his head than there is in many of
tis bede, he couldn't be understood. His Honor
med him $5, which immediately brought him to
, eease of his situation.
Another man, who had had a severe knock down
rom John Barleycorn, and who determined to
ight some body else, bat couldn't find him, was
ironght in by a policeman and pat in a cell.
rVhen his Honor fined him t5, he said it was a
roree Bell than the other.
A man running a race-horee in the streets was
ined $5 by the Mayor. He waa much put out be
:anse the nuire won that race.
COL, JOHN CUNNINGHAM.-We are pleased to
totice the following paragraph concerning this
gentleman in the Augusta Constitutionalitt of
Sunday last :
COL. JOHN CUNNINGHAM.-The fond recollection
if other and better days came crowding oar
aemory as we cordially greeted in our sanctum
restorday, Col. John Cunningham, of Charleston,
rho, notwithstanding the wear and tear of four
rears' hardship, is looking remarkably well. The
Colonel ia engaged in planting in one of the Upper
Metricta of South Carolina, and visited Augusta
or a few days on business connected with his
utting interests. He left for home yesterday
.fteroooa,

HENRY LARCOMBE, proprietor of the ice cream
rarden in Calhoun-str % opposite Elizabeth
itreet, and one door east of Aneon-atreet, takes
his method of informing hie fr?en da and our citi?
ons goner-Hy, that the row on Monday in Cal*
ioun-e treet was three doore from his place, and
hat he had no connection with it whatever, as
nay have been inferred from the notice in this
?aper. He proclaims this dance house to be a
uisanoe, which ought to be abated, for the peace
nd quiet of the neighborhood. *
The above party bears a good character for
onesty, industry and civility; we therefore take
leas ure in placing him in a proper position be

and others who buy large parcels, that a visit to his store
would be advantageous to them.
MB. CHAP?N, our neighbor, advertises to day largely,
and well he may. He has a splendid lot of carriages
and buggies, of the most superior style and workman?
ship. We have had tho pleasure of a personal Inspection
of some of his finest specimens, and do not remember
to have ever seen anything more elegant The "Ureka"
especially commanded our admiration, as did the splen?
did "Brett," which has been imported for one of our
most distinguished merchants.
ITS HABD BUT ITS EAST.-Hard to escape breathing
into thc system tho pol?onous malaria that joyous spring
brings in Its train, and which lurks like a deadly serpent
in thiB paradise of seasons. But lt ls easy to neutralize
this poison-remove this deadly serpent's sting, and
avert the consequences-sickness and death-by a time?
ly use of PINKERTON'S WAHOO and CALISAYA BITTERS.
They never fail fc> do it. P. C. KERRIGAN, NO. 80 Mar?

Li G no IKE LAMPS.-These excellent safety lamps,
wlil ch have been for salo for some time past at the store
of G. DAVIS A Co., Ko. 245 King-street, have been lately
very much improved, by patting on a new burner, and
adding a shade, enabling them to give a very brilliant
but soft light. Wo had occasion to purchase one of
them a few days ago, and are much pleased with it, as
It bas all the brightness of any other we have ever used,
and the ligroine not being an oil, lt Is moah easier to be
kept clean, and no danger of grease, that eyesore to a
good housekeeper.
CLOTHING.-One of the largest and handsomest as
I sort men ts of fine spring clothing may be found at W.
I A. LUDLOW'S new furnishing store, at the corner of
Hayne and Meeting-streets (np itairs), where all who
desire can be accommodated with a superior style and
quality of goods, and at prices to snit the times. City
and country dealers are requested to give them a call
before purchasing elsewhere, where many will recog?
nize an old friend in the person of GEORGE F. BANKIN,
long and favorably known in the business, and who will
be happy to assist them in selecting their goods, guar?

most popular grocery establishments in the city, and
which has ben recently materially enlarged. We con?
gratulate our young friend on nia great success, and ad?
vise our readers Who have so liberally bestowed their
patronage on the little grocery acorn to accord it still
farther to the big grocery oak. Mr. LEVIN keeps the
best of ever y thing and everything of the best Call and
take home a bottle of gin cocktail, Arrack punch, or

at things generally.
BAUE CRANCE FOB PROFITABLE INVESTMENT.-A rare
chance for a judicious and moat profitable investment
of capital is offered In the sale of real estate advertised
by Messrs. NATHAN A OTTOLXNOOI, to take place this
morning, at the Exchange, corner of East Bay and
Broad-street, at eleven o'clock. The valuable lota of?
fered are located next to the site of the theatre, and are
therefore in that portion of the city which will no doubt,
as soon as the work of rebuilding commences, be the
head centre of wholesale trade. Who ever parchases
theselotaat anything like tho present prices of real
estate, will ensure for themselves a respectable chance
of doubling their capital in less than three years; for
Independent of the rise that property must take In
Charleston as soon as things begin to work at they
should, the rental of wholesale stores pat ap in this
neighborhood would pay a handsome Interest on the
money invested. Be at the sain In time, and let the
bidding show a lively spirit of competition, and the
confidence of the blddera in the bright prospects that
are yet in store for old Charleston.
