PURSE FOUND.-Yesterday a colored woman named
Jnllanne Bobear saw a boy pick up a parse In We nt
worth street, and run off with it. She gave chase, over
took tbe boy, and took It away from him. On examin
ing it, it proved to be a very nice parse, containing an
Etruscan brooch and a small amount of money. In
stead of converting It to her owu uso, as she might very
well havo done, and as we are sorry to bolle ve most peo
ple would have done, sim carried it to the Gnard House,
to be taken care off, and advertised, and delivered te the
owner when called for. Jnllanne ttobear was formerly
a slave, and is still very mnob attached to ber formor
owners. A virtue is seldom found alone, and here we
have a display of honesty ?laing credit to a well-tried
fidelity.

long indulged In the annoying and dangerous practice
of throwing stones at ooch other in the streets, and es
pecially on the Citadel Ur on, the Bat cry, and other
open piscos. The fights on the Green havo been stopped
for some time, and practice generally Is on the decrease,
bat it has not bean totally sb.udoued, and yesterdays
squad of city police made a aulden decent upon a par
oel of thoso pugnacious and restless b'>ys, and suocoeded
in capturing three and otrrying them to the Guard
Honse. Thereat of the party escaped after a hard race
and a great fright It is to be hoped that our vigilant

a tall, black, dirty negro, with a bran new c vp, but no
thing olso now or clean. A gold watch would have boon

watches. They Invest tho first of their earnings in
watches, aud if thoy can't buy thom thoy steal them.

more particularly described it, a silver escape watch.
Tho following case of dog stealing elicited more inter
est than any other boforo the Court:
United States vs. Minus It jp ar and Bristol Roper
Larcony of a Dog.-FREDERICK BISCHJFF. sworn, Eays
that ho saw defendant, Minus Roper, leading a dog tied
by a string. WltneBs inquired politely of Mr. Minus
Ropor, colored Individual, if tho right of property in the
sal I dog lay in him the said Mr. Minus Roper, colored
Individual; also, for what sum of money ho would ex
change the said canine quadruped, and also to what
cognomen the said canine was trained to answer. Tho
Bald Mr. Minus Ropor, colored individual, replied cate
gorically to him, FREDERICK BISCHOFF, German, that
tho canino waa his, that ho would tako $10, and that the
canine answered to the name of Brutus. Witness offer
ed to purchaae half cash, half at oxplration of six
weeks. Wilnoss carried Mr. M. R., colored individual,
home with him, and gave him six dollars. Tills morn
ing, while witness wts coming from market, ?dog left
him and catered store of Messrs. HITHER k HABEL, well
known vendors of India rubber beltiug, patent von tl
lators, &c, ko. Witness wont luto store after dog.
Gentleman in store said dog belonged to British friend
of his, H. P. WALKER, Consul Witness thon carried
dog to Consul's residence. Dog therein soemod at
homo, and heeded the name of Jeff, whereby it appear
ed that ho had boon named in honor of the Confodorato
and not tho Roman hero. Witness loft dog with Con
sul's brother's son, who Is prciont in Court to do his
own swearing.
F. D. WALKER, Consul's brother's son, sworn : Saya
that ho knows the canine now under discussion. Said
canine is the property of H. P. WALKER, Esq., Her
British Majesty's Consul in tho Qaeeu City. Canino, as
was his custom, accompanied witness. Home ton days
lu the past, toa diurnal haunt of witness known as the
office. Canine ontered, but departed quickly, and was
no more seen until this morning, when ho was brought
to the i caldenco of witness' father's brother, Her British
Majosly's Consul aforesaid, by Mr. FREDERICK BISCH
OFF, the Gorman gentleman who has just rotired from
the stand. No particle of doubt of tho identity of
canine disturbs tho mind of witness.
Mr. Minus Roper, colored individual, was found
guilty and sentenced to $10 flue or ton days' Imprison .
ment Mr. Bristol Ropor waa acquitted and discharged.
Mary Oondlng, colored female, for disorderly conduct
In camp, was sentenced to twenty days' Imprisonment,
subject to order of ProvoBt Marshal.

light of the familiar countenance of the Mayor was shed
upon his sateUltoa some minutes before nlno o'clock.
While waiting for that hour his Honor, relaxing from
judicial dignity, narrates anecdote of surprised hone.
Firit Case.-A po*. of LEVT. Flibby woman in a
killing bonnet Drunk. Biackguirding her husband
loudly. Destroying at once connubial felicity and the
public peace, Turned over to a magistrate.
Second Case.- Prisonor sick. Dootor prescribed sonp
dinner, aad milk and broad breakfast and supper.
Artesian water and bread plus being the only sick diet
afforded by the Guard House, prisoner was sent to jail
that ha might fare more anrnptnously.
Third Cate -Elderly individual with gray hair and
very little ot it. Riding on the pavement Dofonded
himself eloquently from propared notes. Eloquence
not convincing. Fined $6. Declined to pay. Wonder
if It won't cost him $1001
CROPS ON FEE DKK -A writer to the Marlen Cretcent
thus speaks of crops in tho northoastern part of the
8tate. The letter la dated Juno 3: "Within two weeks I
have seen nearly all the crops on the road from Oil
obnst's Bridge to Britton'? Ferry, and several miles
below the ferry, and many crops not on said road. From
all that I have seen and hoard In a scope of country on
Little Pee Dee, there are but two men who have planted
an avengo orop of mitton In four hundred square miles
-those two have planted mora than an average crop
got a bad rise, and I saw nineo the ISth of May that a
large part had boon ploughed np, and heard that they
were continuing to plough and plant But few, if any
others, have planted noar an average crop of cotton or
corn. Tho corn looks better than I expeoted to find It
under the disadvantage of extreme wei and cold. The
cotton generally looks badly, and not a very good stand.
Therefore, I am of opinion that if the seasons are fa
vorable tho remainder of the year, and the oropa well
tended, that wo shall not realizo m >ro than a two-thirds
crop of corn and a half crop of cotton. The seasons
may be adverse, aud goncrally it Is impossible to con
trol free negroes to near tho same extent aa when slaves.
From theso circumstances, and others not mention ed, I
have come folly to tho conclusion that we shall not
generally realize more than one half of an average
corn crop, and one-third of cotton crop."

MURDER.-Tho Savannah Ripublican, of Juio 7th,
says that, on Wednesday miming, at C>H o'clock, the
dead body of a negro was found floating down the river.
It was sooured and the Coroner notlAod, who Immedi
ately empannelled a Jury of inquest, whoso finding w111
be seen below. The negro was not Identified, and no
clue has as yet been obtained as to his identity. He wa s
