LOCAL, MATTERS. -.*. ?sr SEE SECOND AND THIRD PACES. -_? a.? Oke of our hulks is nover to publish a notico of a marriago without its being indorsed by a rc sponeiblo narno. This will account for tbo non appearance, io our papor this morning, of an ad vertiaoinont of this kind, which wns yesterday placed on our filo without tho roquired indorse ment. TnE Weather.-After passing through tho days of heat wo havo, it would bo ingrat i tu do in us not to pay a compliment to tho pleasantness that tho change of yoBterday afforded us. With a clear sky and a delightful east wind that was continual, tho wholo day was of a temp?rature bo difioront from those which have roceutly preceded it, as to bo really agrooable, aud to maka tis wish, as wo do in festival days, for many roturo-. We have been furniehod with tho following order, issued by the Medical Director of tho De partment. Wo are assured, however, that tho order will bo rnvokod as soon as cholera mani fests itsolf in the city, which timo wo hope may uever como, and that it may be spoodily revoked in consequence of the entire disappearance of tho epidemic from our country: Department of the Carolinas, ) Medical Direct??r's Office, > Charleston, 8. C August 4th, 1800. ) Cikoular.- All vessels arriviug in this Depart ment, having cleared from Now York, must be quarantined till fifteen (15) days shall expire from date of cloarauce, when they "will ho allowod to pass, provided thorn is or has been no sickness ?d board and tho vossel is clean. CHARLES PAGE, SurgeoD U. 8. Army, Medical Director. Southern Ingenuity.-Planters and farmers will bo gratified upon examining a newly invented implement, adapted to the tilings of staplo crops, by W. O. Gibbon, of this city. He is dow manu facturing them, and they are for sale by 0. K. Huoer, No. 137 Meeting-street, opposite Hayne Btreet, Charleston. -o The following are the numbers which drew the principal prizes io the Havana Plan Kentucky Stato Lottery, Class F, Tuesday, July 31, 18GG : No. 3201, $100,000 ; No. 21,148, $50,000 ; No. 22,182, $25,000 ; No. 10,916, $10,000 ; No. 5197, $5000 ; No. 25,195, $2850. -o Sidewalks.-We are pleased to note quite an improvement in the sidewalk in frout of the Uni ted Staten atables ou Church street. By whoso authority these much needed repairs were made we know not, but bail the reconstruction with de light, and only hope tho Governixent mules will excroieo discretion and not kick it out. GovebnmentSaiji at Beaufort.-We learn there is a Government Bale at Beaufort oo Wednesday, at 10 o'clock, which consiste of two wharves, koowa as Piers Noa. 1 and 2, steam boilers, etc. The steam er Cosmopolitan will leave to-night at 10 o'clock, for Hilton Head and Beaufort, and will carry par ties who desire to attend the sale free, upon appli cation at the Quartorrpaeter's offico, No. 43 East Bay. Glenn Spbinqb.-Many of our readers will no tice with pleasuro the announcement io to-day's News of the opening of tho above old and favor ite summer resort. Wo are personally acquiutod with Mr. Anderson, the gentleman who is in charge of the hotel this summer, and most cheer fully bear testimony to his good capacity as a hotel-keeper. The superior properties of the water aro too well koowa in the Southern couutry to need praise from us. Ahead of Time.-Mr. Quinn, of the Up Town Pe.iodical Dopot, in King-street, opposite Ano, has sent us Petei'son's Ladies1 National Magazine for September. Tiaro is a beautiful scarlet lady, fresh from Paris, in the fashion plate. AIbo, sove ral other extensively beflonnced and betrimmed figures, with bonnets so infimtoaimally pretty that notbiug short of Lord Boss* telescope could give the uninitiated an idea of what the modiste intended by this capital decoration. Literary con tents in the usual stylo. Mr. Quinn has atao sent ns copies of the New York Herald, Metropolitan Record, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, Police Gazette, Harper's Weekly, aud New York Ledger. The Galaxy.-We have receiver^ from the pnb liehors No. 8 of the Galaxy. Table of contents : 1. Archie Lovell, by Mrs. Edwards. 3. Albert Bler.tadt, by Henry T I oc.erm.n. 3. Scientific Question SErn.ED.-From a circulai lately published, and sent to d?neront parts .al the country, by "William Isaacs Loomib, Bapi ,"> Pastor, Columbia County, N. Y.," we extract mc following paragraph, feeling much pleased that this much discnsBod matter has, at last, received its quietus : ''Let it be understood that the Dual appearing Diurnal and Annual Sun aro tbo high attesting witnesses of Nature of tho Earth's Annual ami Axial motions, and that an Amorican was the first to announce this to mankiud. Add these teati mouiee of Nature to tho changes of the seasons, and tho fact of the earth's annual motion in an orbit becomes moro folly demonstrated than over before. Hallelujah I" Rev. Dr. Bboadus and the Grkenville Theo logical Seminabt.-As a painful impression has been croated by the publication of tho fact that the Rev. Jno. A. Broados, D. D , has been called from our 8thto to the Prt_idenoy of Biohmond OoUoro, it is proper that we shonld state that thero is no probability that the theological Semi nary at Greenville will lone his valuable services. Dr. BnoADus will remain in charge of the chair whioh he has previously occupied with so mnoh fe, I acceptance-thut of Greek Testament Literature and Interpretation aud Pulpit Homilotics. Wo .?ro pleased to learn that tho prospects of tho Seminary ?ro unusually encouraging. Tho bor der States have claimed tho privilego ol' contribu ting to its finances, and from this source no" loss than $10,000 havo been collected during the hist two months. Rov. Dr. Buyco, tho Chairman of the Faculty, is now on a tour in its bohalf among tho Baptists of Missouri, in compliance with their earnest invitation. Mayor's Court, August 0.-A man who was drunk, for tho firet timo in his life, nu ho said, and raising a row that would havo done oredit to an old soaker, was fined $5 as an initiation fee. A gentloman, who evidently sleeps without a mosquito net, was brought np for lining improper language io the street. Ho was fined $5, and theo ordered to bo turned over to tho tender mcr cioB of a magistrate. A man who was fouod lying down drunk, and taking up moro of tho strcot than ho was entitlod to, and who pledged his word that he had only taken ono drink, waa fioed $5, and kindly request ed novor to take another like it, as long as ho lived. Two others, who wero found making bod-cham bers of tho sidewalks, wero charged $5 oach for lodging, which would havo been eottled imme diately if the city had consented to take a slow note. A man with shabby clothes, and who said ho "hadn't nothing to do," and that, wanting to bo a farmer, was waiting for something to (um up, was discharged. A mau and woiuau, accused of trespass on premises, but proved that they were ooly paying a visit to a iriend, wero discharged. Nine tavern keepors, who wero keeping their friends iu spirits on Sunday, wero stuck in for $20 fine, each, on Monday. Provost Court.-United St.toB M. John Char lony.-Rose Ann Muller, tho prosocutrix, swore that the defendant carno into hor house whon drunk, and commenced boating and cursiog her. She did not know him, and ho evidently mistook her for eomo one clee. The Court decided that Charlont was on a rampAge, aud the coat of such amusements was $15 line, or one month's manual labor on the publie streets. United States vs. Geo. L. Habris -Assault and battery on John De Largo (colored).-It appear ed, in this case, that the prosecutor, beiug moved by the spirit, went into a bar-room on Eaet Bay to quench his thirst. Tho defendant, taking um brage at his color, gavo lirru one straight from the shoulder. This astonishing salute had the effect of keeling him over and closing one of his peepers. This was considered a very undignified manner of forniing'an acquaintance, and for fear a precedent should bo established, the Court fined the pugilist $50, or sixty days' hard labor on the streets. United States M. Aleck Williams (colored)_ For drawing a pistol on Pete Lewis (colored)_ The defendant was bound over to Lewis ; and be iog a lad of metal, and believing io the Civil Rights Bill, resented a whipping, which was being administered to him, by drawing a pistol on bis employer. Ab euch a proceeding waa very dan gerous, and would have been prejudicial to Lewis' future happiness, the Cour, fioed the youthful Alexander $15, or thirty days' warlike exercises upon somo stones in the public thoroughfares. A case of stealing lumbor was the next tried, and tho defendants being found not guilty, wero discharged. United States ?... Richard Eden, (colored). Drunk and Lying Down.-Toe prisoner was dis covered by the police snoozing on the bricks, chock full of bad whiskey, and some to spare, as he had an extra bottle in his pocket. Bacchus and MorpheuB combined, had auch a powerful effect upon the prisoner that tho attentive policeman could hardly rccuBcitato him. Tho Court aen touced Richard to ante $5, or work it by ten days' labor. Uuited States ... Poter Jcokios (colored). Disorderly Conduct.-Tho prisoner was a fisher man, and being requested by a policeman to show his tiokot, became very abusivo and waa taken to the Guard House. The Court fioed him $3, or six days' hard labor on the streets. United States vs. John Lowis (colored).-Tho prisoner was heard, at the corner of Church and Elliott streets endeavoring to get up a row. Ho would not subside, and had tolbe carried to the Guard House "ci et armit." His sentence was $5, or ten days' hard labor oo the streets. The Nerve of the Pocket ia sometimos as sen sitive as the nerve of the tooth. The universal demand for the fragrant SOZODONT, in prefer ence to all other dentrifricoe, is swamping all tooth powders and tooth washes of the experi mental class of Dentists. Hence they denounce it. .?_____-?_.?__?__? tue2 BUSINESS NOTICES. Auction Sales Tills Day.
