It will be seen, by reference to our advertising columns, that the Charleston and Savannah Bail road will be offered at pu olio outcry on the 20th of November next, by Mesare. WARDLAW & CAREW, ander the direction of the Trustees. This is a most important and valuable property, and will claim the attention of capitalists throughout the j country. It is the commoting link between this t City and Savannah, and oan be placed in good condition at a comparatively small expenditure. j| -- t WILD OAT.-We saw yesterday, at the office of t the Southern Express, one of the finest epeci-, ^ mens of the above named animal we have ever eeen. Io was caught in the neighborhood of Jackson boro', in this S ate. We learn that Mr. BICE expects another one in a day or two, and in? tends presenting the two to the Zoological Society of New York. Those of our readers who would like a peep at the feline specimen, oan be grati? fied, by calling upon Mr. Bios, at the Southern Express offioe. BOOK AND JOB PBXNTING_We have had laid on oar table a nicely printed circular enclosing a.very neat card, from the establishment of Mr. A. J. BURKE, No. 69 Meeting-street, next to the Mills Honse. Mr. B. has been for thirty years conduct? ing this bneinese, and has had au experience sur? passed by none in the Southern couutry, and while he has in that time executed every species of "the art," he has always been moderate in his charges, and punctual in his engagements. . AGRICULTURAL IMPLEMENT WAREHOUSE.- The attention of our readers is called to the advertise? ments of our enterprising yoong friends, LITTLE & MARSHALL, who have removed from the Bay to Meeting street. These gentlemen have peouliar advantages in their Une, and as they make a specialty of it, we ha??-m*.d<roht. hut th?? -?W?Tf?f "greatef'aaV&ntages to the public than h any other house in our city. Anyhow, they oan do as well by their customers HS any other concern, and wo most heartily commend them, knowing them to be'very good business men and very honorable in their dealings. MAYOR'S COURT, August 17.-A man who was taken np from the ground so drunk as to know . nothing about it, was fined $5, by way of giving him an inkling of the p ouliar position he had been found in. A storekeeper who waB brought up for selling dry goods without being measured with a yard etiok, had his case laid over for consideration. A lady who sells ioe cream was called np for I < selling liquor also, so as to enable her visitors to j i indulge iu that deli-ion? beverage called "Eoman Punch;" bat she dearly proved that the gentlemen who made the drink in ber garden obtained the liquor from a licensed tavern in the vicinity of her establishment, and was discharged with a warn? ing from the Mayor that it must not occur ?gain. An individual who had imbibed some noisome whiskey, and who waa consequently very riotous, and "troubling everjb -dy," ?as fined $10, which we think it will trouble him to p ty. Aman of s?ghl, astronomical pretensions, who was found lying on the pavement near the Guard House, face up, and who boldly asserted that he was looking for the comet which h is brought the recent hot weather, was carefully picked up by a few of "the stars," and tbiB morning pleasantly fined $6 by his Honor. PBOVOST COTJBT, Angu-4 16 -The Court had but a meagre docket >eaterda\ ; ouly throe criminal cases were brought up for trial United States os. Linda Wilson (colored) - Stealing.-It appesred by the teatimouy that the defendant wished* to improve her personal appear? ance and add to her wardrobe. Feeling convinced that this was a nece siiy. ?he went ?tito a house on Tradd street and almira ed a muslin dreBB and other articles f om a tub. She was suou and hailed, but on ran her pursuers- and carrie l oil her ill-gotten booty. The Court thought that Linda's method of furiii-hing hi roelf was rather irregular, aud fined her $10 or ten days' hard labor on the streets. United States es. Melton Linton (colored). Brickbatling.-The defendant went into a store on King street to buya coat, bu? could not suit himself and became aba ive. Tue clerk pu-bed him out, when be picked up a bri< k ?nd threw it at him. A policeman seeing the row, arrested the prisoner, and found on searching him that be had no money ?Lernt him. The Court sentenced Lin? ton to pay $10 fine, or woik it nut by ten day?' hard labor on the streets. Be was also advised in future to pay for his sait or he would be non suited. United States vs. John Bobinson (oolored). Stealing -The defendant was tried for abstracting certain articles of clothing from the premises of Ohas. Freiieti k, the prosecutor, and carrying them to parts unknown. Tue oase was ootitiuued until the 17tb, to allow the parties more time to oollecl. witnesses, &o. State, til ing. I MUBDEB.-We lonni that a murder was connu't , ti d a row days a??o on the plantation ol' vir. Al ? oxatider Burgess, in Olarend ti District, by a I negro upon the perron of another negro. Tue parties were gro*n men, and wert- disputing about an axe, wnen one of thom st ru -k tho ot lier with a hue on the heail, causing almost instant death. Wo understand the murderer ia still at large. He is not amenable to tue civil law, and the Freedmen's Bureau, we HUDPOse, has not yet heard of it, while the culprit ra iy be hundreds of miles from tho place where the murder w tb com? mitted. Weat an instance of tho utter inability of this Bureau to perform the work for which it is said it was oreated. It is a o .molote farce. [Kingstree Star. REV. J. 0. B. DARGAN, D. D.-From the re olu tious of iba Black Creek Church published in another column, ic A ill be aeon that this gentle? man has accepted the position of General Agent of the Baptist Convention ot this S'ate. Tho agent will be under the direction of an Executive Board to be located at this place, which Board will pos I 868B all the powers of the -<tato Convention dur? ang the intel iras of that body. To it is confided State Missions, Colp.irtage, Sunday Schools and the building up of the waste places ot' the Baptist I Zion throughout tho State. The General Agent I bas thus confided to him a very great and n ible work. We wich our friend Dr Dargan great suc? cess in the discharge of his high and responsible duties. Darlington baa reason to congratulate herself on thus becoming the headquarters of the large and influential Baptist denomination of this State. We rejoioe iu everything that promises to prosper our village.- DarUngt'in Southerner. No BAIN.-Ag .in we aro differing for rain. The late corn-the hope of our plauters-is threatened with tho ruiu that befell the early corn.-Ibid. The Sumter Watchman says that recent rains have greatly revived tue crops in that section, but the prospect for bread is sad indeed. John G lightly, of this District, repulsive in person and habits, has boen hung up without ceremony near Audersou, for hor^o stealing. He ?.as a nuisance here, stealing mist everything on which ho oouldlaybis hands. His end was an iwl'ul one, aud wo trust, it may be a warning for rascals of his stripe.-Picken* Co wier., The Abbeville Press says tint ?ev. D. McNeill Turner, at the tariie.it solicitation of his cout^re ratiou, has concluded to withdraw his resignation indcmiuuo in charge of the Presbyteriau Church it that place. THE DROUGHT.- Some of our farmers say there las uot been a dew in many partB of this District >ince June. Whether thia statement is exagger? ated or not, we have not had a general rain in ?early two month*. The corn is twisted int > yel ow ribbons, aud the half grown cottou pods have >egun to open nearly a month in advance of the ame for maturity. As the government has donated several million .cres of lands in the West to freedmen, and pro >ably transportation to their new homes, they bad letter taue the hint and leave. There will not ie food enough raised here to feed those who are int tho favored pensioners of the government, f the blacks leave t here will bo a larger share for he hungry. - YorkoiUe Enquirer. THE L?GISLATURE.-Wo learn that Governor )rr will convene this body in special session on Tuesday, the 28th inst. A modification of tbe iegro Code, the relief of debtors, and a provision br the suffering poor, will oonstitute the impor ant aubjects of legislation.-Abbeville Press. The Sumter Watohman informs us that Captain Jardeo, formerly oommauder of the Palmetto ?attery, is about to bec. .me a resident of Colum? na, to pursue the praotice of law. THE REPORTED MURDER AT DORO.-We are leased to learn, by a note received from Dr Cen - er (a kinsman- of the yoong ladies referred to), hat there is no foundation for the reported mur - 1er. The only statement we have to make with -eference to the matter is this: That we reoeived he account from such a source as to entitle it to iredit.-Columbia Phonix, of yesterday. H?HIN?H? NOTIONS.
