GRAND MASQUERADE BALL.-Our friends of |
the Freundschaftsbund, who are always so sue"
cess'al in devising and carrying out schemes of
social enjoyment, are getting ready for a grand
masquerade ball, to came off at Hibernian Hall,
on the evening of the 3d of February. It will
probably eclipse anything of the kind that has
ever been seen in Charleston. Although the num?
ber of tickets will be limited, a cordial Invitation
ls extended to thc friends of thc Bund and the
general public to participate in the festivities.
DEPARTURE CF TUE SPAXISII FLEET.-^The
fifteen Spanish gunboats that have been anchored
off the battery for the yast few days went to sea
on Saturday morning in tow of the steamtng
Samson. The frigate Tizarro was In w<ing out?
side, and the fleet was soon on its way to the
"Ever Faithful Isle." Two of the gunboats have
not been heard from and are supposed to have
be% lost on the North Carolina coast. The wind
was very high on Saturday night and the sea?
going qualities of the "musquito fleet" were doubt
Vss severely tested.
CHARLESTON TYPOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY.-At
the seml-centeunlal anniversary of the Charleston
Typographical Society, held on the 1st instant,

REV. THOMAS SMYTH, D. D.-This venerable
and learned divine, who for forty years has been
the pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church of
this city, was on Saturday last the recipient or a
testimonial of affection from his congregation, In
thc form of a valuable gold watch, presented to
him as a New Year's gift. It can be seen for a
few days at Mr. Allan's Jewelry store, No. 307
King street, and ls well worthy of inspection as a
very superior article of American workmanship.
We also understand that the yoong ladies of thc
Sunday school of this church also presented then*
beloved pastor, on Christmas lost, with a hand
somejiuggy blanket and rag, as a token of their
appreciation.

Simms; "Pattes de Velours," a graceful poem by
Mr. Sass, and "Shoulder to Shoulder," by Per?
sonne; "A Message from thc Sea" wiU not, we re?
gret to say, add to the literary r?putation of the
magazine. Poor prose is better than yard-stick
poetry.
The proprietors announce that in the February
number will be given the opening of a new South?
ern romance "The Storm and the Sunset," by
Colonel Harry Cleveland.
- SHREDS OF STATE NEWS.-The Orangerjrrrg--|
News says that there has been a great rise m the
Edisto. The whole swamp ls under water, for
three-quarters of a mlle from the river bank. Mr.
Al. P. Harley's dam has given way, and the water
has overflowed lt In several places. Thc bridges
are all badly damaged, though none of them are
entirely gone.
Moses Dowlll, of Georgetown, was badly burned
on Christmas day, by the explosion of a flask of
powder.
On Wednesday, thc 22d ult., thc store of Mr. A.
Morgan, of Georgetown, was robbed of a sum of
money; and on Monday night a negro named
Buces was shot while making a similar attempt.
Alf/ed Geiger, negro, has been arrested on sus?
picion of being one of the would-be murderers of
Mrs. Sarah1 Richardson, near Columbia. Mrs
Richardson may recover.
CRUMBS.-The Union League wore. crape on
their badges on Saturday, as a mart of respect
to Stanton. lr
Sam Dickerson, the valiant captain of a colored
company, had an altercation aa Saturday with
1 an outsider, also colored, In which the latter so
far forgot the respect ?tue Sam's bullion epau?
lettes, as to strike him with a small stick. Sam
was not "spiling for a fight," and had the offender,
arrested.
Flags were flying on Saturday from the City
Hall and Guardhouse-H U presumed la honor or
the emancipation anniversary.
Ford's Dramatic Company are staying at the
pavilion Hotel, aud Miss Laura Alexauder is at
the Charleston.

BRATION.-New Year's day in Charleston passed

made thc occasion as usual of social and family
reunions; hut if we except the turnout of a few
of Hie colored people, there was no outdoor inci?
dent worthy of note.
The procession formed in honor or the anniver?
sary of emancipation was composed of four color?
ed military companies, followed l>y a straggling
linc made up of thc mcmUcrs of the Union League
and other colored associations. The whole Was
preceded bj a baud, and was under Hie chief niar
Shalship or Magistrate T. J. .Mackey -the only
white man, by thc way. in thc pageant-who
was supported in ?he execution or his arduous
duties by as mauy ebony assistants, on prancing
chargers, as would have surtlccJ to marshal a
countless host.
After inarching through the principal streets,
the procession went to thc Military Hail, where
thc emancipation proclamation was read by R. D.
Artson, colored, and an oration delivered by W.
il: Mishaw, colored. Speeches were also made by
T. J. Mackey and F. J. Moses, Jr.
Mayor Pillsbury, Collector Clark, and the lead?
ing Republicans of the city, both white and col?
ored, were all invited to participate jn the cele?
bration, but they did not respond. Tiic Uuiou
League, "though mostly colored, has about 150
white men enrolled on ifs list of members, but
they were all minus on this occasion.

HAMLET AT THE ACADEMY.-This everting,
after an Interval of nearly twelve years, there ls
to be a revival of the Shakespearean drama on thc
Charleston stage. Everybody will bc glad to have
a season or the noble tragedies with which wc
arc all so Tamiliar, especially as they will be
brought out In splendid style. Manager Ford has
been at great expense to secure for a few nights
thc services of Neil Warner, the eminent Eng?
lish tragedian, who will appear in a series
of the standard and favorite plays. Mr.
Warner will bc supported, we feel authorized
to say, by an excellent combination or
talent. To night wc arc to have Hamlet,
Mr. Warner personating thc moody Prince or Den?
mark. Miss Eldridge, whom we have hitherto
known chiefly in comedy parts, will make a lovely
Ophelia. Included in thc cast arc Mr. Parker as
Polonlus, Mrs. Eldridge as the Queen, Miss Alex?
ander as the Player-Queen, Mr. Ryan as thc
Grave Digger, and Mr. O'Neil as the Ghost. The
tragedy will be presented with every elaboration
or detail. Wc advise our readers to secure their
seats early to-day, as there ls sure to be a crowded
house.

THE LICENSE BILL AGAIN.-Thc secret ses?
sion of Council on Friday night resulted In a
modification or thc License bill, and a special
meeting was called on Saturday night In or Jei?
to give the bul Its second and third readings.
Only five of the Aldermen were In attendance,
and no meeting could be held. We understand
that many of the obnoxious features of the bill
have been mod tiled. Brokers are taxed onl.r $50,
and thc general tax on the various branches of
their business has been reduced about onc-balf.
The tax on liquor dealers has been lowered, and
that on lawyers and doctors has been increas?
ed to $2? The bill has been much Improved, and
ls generally more equitable in Its provisions,
but will hardly prove acceptable to the majority
of taxpayers. Aldermau Wall, we learn, wilt
press an amendment prohibiting persons licensed
from making any distinction ou account of race
or color, undera heavy penalty.
HALF-RATE MESSAGES.-The Western Union
Telegraph Company will receive messages at and
for all stations on the lines, East of thc Mississippi
River and west of thc Province or New Bruns?
wick, for transmission during the night, at one
half the usual tariff rates; provided, however,
that the tolls on any message at half rates shall
not be less than twenty cents. Hair rate mes?
sages arc required to be written upou hair rate
messige blanks, which can bc obtained by appli?
cation at the offices of the company. Messages
to be transmitted at tlf rates will bc received at
any hour during the day between 8 o'clock A. M.
