KETTS OF TBE DAT.
-Professor Joseph Le Conte, In a paper In
BRUmr.n-'-j Journal,- upholds the opinion that
the whole, theory of geology muBt be recon?
structed on the basis of a solid earth.
-Late advices from Brazil report that the
cotton cropln that country has suffered serious
Injury, and that ihe deficiency will be much
larger than had been anticipated. The ship?
ments ar? already almost at an end, and but
trifles are still expected from the Interior.
-The burnt district in Boston now presents
an exceedingly animated appearance. The
work of rebuilding ls progressing at a very
rapid rate, and present Indications are that
before the snows of another winter fall little
. will be lort to mark the scene of ihe conflagra?
tion. - *
-Florida is destined to be the Arcadia for
tho sick and the Invalids of the North. Its
. delighitul winter climate, Its fruit, game and
fish, all conspire to mike lt attractive both to
the sick and the pleasure ce.'-er. Tbe num?
ber of visitors ibis year has been unprecedent?
ed, and many have concluded to buy property
and make'it a winter home in the future.
-Illinois workmen still enjoy the privilege
of working or not, as they please, but a new
law Just signed by the governor renders lt a
very serious matter for them to interfere with
others In the exercise ot the same privileges.
Persons convicted of attempting either indi?
vidually or IG combination to coerce either
workmen or employers are liable to a fine of
$500 or six month?' Imprisonment.
-lt ls announced that the Petit Journal of
Paris, which probably has really "the largest
circulation In the world." has passed Into the
hands of that mort enterprising ot French
newspaper meo, M. Emile de Glrardln, In
conjunction with M. Gilbrat ol Le Constitu?
tionnel and M. Jenty ol La France. It 1B
farther stated that M. de Glrardln bas sold
La Libert? to tils nephew, M. Detroyal, but
probaly at the same lime retaining consider?
able Influence over lt. The circulation of the
Petit Journal ls over 200,000 a day. Its price
ls a sou. It has a largo client?le In London
also. M. de Girardin ls now nearly seventy.
-The London money market, according to
the last mail advice, wat beginning lo be in?
fluenced by the prospector new foreign loans
It ls understood that a large operation on
account of the Russian Government is In con
temptation, and Egypt and Turkey will also
appear as borrowers before long. . Advices
from Brussels report the issue of a three per
cent, loan for 240,000,000 francs. Intended
partly for the purchase of the Great Luxem?
burg Ballway, and partly to assist to the con?
version of the (aisling deb*:. Subscriptions
have been Invited iot Massachusetts bonds for
$600,000 at five per cent. Interest.
-It ls not common fa,* a clergyman to die
In bis pulpit, but this happened a Sunday or
two al nco to the. Rev. T. B. Hudson, pastor of
the M. E. c aurch In Clyde. He had read
about fifteen minutes in a firm and distinct
voice, when suddenly he stopped, requested
that tho-windows be let down to admit the
fresh, air, pressed hts bands to bis forehead
and leaned forward on the deik. Tben, as If
rallying ali his strengin. for the effort, he
began again, and uttered the words, "These
days ar?passlag away," and, as the last sylla?
ble left his Ups, be fell back on the sofa and
expired. Mr. Hudson bad been lor a period
of thirty-three years in the active work ol
tho ministry, and was widely known through?
out central and western New York. ...
-An Important discussion recently took
placo In the New Dominion Parliament rela?
tive to the best and most direct route between
Ganada and Europe. It was explained that
St. John, the moBt easterly point 1H Ameiica,
and Valencia, the most westerly of Europe,
were divided by only about sixteen hundred
miles or one hundred hours, whilst about
forty more would, by railroad over Newfound?
land, by steamer across the Gulf of St. Law?
rence to Shlpplgan, Canada, and thence by
the International Railroad, bring mails or pas
Bengora to Quebec. The construction of this
link of railroad was advocated on the ground
that lt would enable merchants to cross to
Europe, transact their business, and return In
a period of time now scarcely sufficient for
tho outward and reiurn trips, n was also
stated that this route would be shorter aod
preferable even tor New York and Boston
merchants. The ptlme minister of the New
Dominion government warmly ecictses the
project, and promises to give tho subject
his best consideration, and It the scheme ap?
peared practicable, lt would obtain the sup?
port of. his government.
-The feast of Courban-Bdlram, which was
recently celebrated lu Turkey, left no room
for business In any quarter during the lour days
festival. Tue least ls one of sacrifices, and
forms an occasion on wblcb every good Mus?
sulman Immolates one sheep at least with his
own-hands. The poor are dispensed from ibis
pious practice, and And their advantage In
the.dlsiribniions of flesh, which at this period
the rich afford. On the latter ibis act of cbarl
ty ls obligatory, and their position and for
tune are reckoned by the number ot sheep
which they sacrifice, with a view to distribu?
tion among the poor. During the four or five
days preceding the least, Constantinople ls
one huge sheep fold. On every hand nothing
ls seen but flocks of sheep, crowding the
streets and public equares, where the peace?
able animals are offered for sale. The richest
private Individual and the loftiest functionary
of the State does not think lt beneath him to
come in person to this kind ot fair and plunge
his band into tbe tutted bair of the animal he
has already chosen by the eye to make him?
self certain that it is perfectly fat. The pro?
cession to the Mosque this year is said to have
been Immense, almost all the people brlnglog
their sacrifices and wearing costumes ol the
most bizarre description. Nothing In the way
of business is transacted dui lng the least, and
the desire of the Orientals for leisure is fully
gratified._

of the number and extent of these Industries.

This aggregate of annual productions,
$9,858,981, compares very favorably with the
value of the annual products in the other
States, which, from their size, geographical
position, <tc , are fair subjects ot compari?
son; and the following table shows tbat
there aro no less than fifteen other States
and Territories which are led by South Caro?
lina in this respect :

Io many of the States above named lhere
are extensive and varied manufacturing in
tereBts which might naturally be expected to
exceed in importance those of Sonth Caro?
lina. Thus the State of Mississippi has the
industries of Vicksburg, which are reputed
tobe vastly important; the district of Co
lumbla bas its big floor mills at Georgetown,
Nevada bas her lead and eilver mines and
smelting furnaces, Washington Territory her
vaal foreste and busy lumber mills, Arkan?
sas her diversified industries, embracing al?
most every department of labor, Oregon
tbe lumber, flour and mechanical resources
of the North Pacific coast, and Utah the la
bor of the frugal and industrious Mormons
and the extensive works of the Pacific Rall
road.
The explanation of Sonth Carolina's com
parative importance io this respect appears
to be furnished by a second table given in
the census report, which shows the great di
versity of the manufacturing industries in
the State, which probably contribute more,
by their great number and variety, than by
their individual importance, io the aggre
gate result. The number of establishments,
and the value of the annual products of the
most important of these industries, are
stated as follows :
Kind. Number. Products.
Carpentering and building. .. 64 $ 313,350
Cotton mills. 12 1,529,937
Fertilizers. 9 425,000
Flour and grist mills.624 3.180,247
Lumber mills.229 1,232,005
Machinery. 21 426,427
Printing and publishing. 13 257,166
Tar and turpentine. 64 774.077
In addition to these, there are specified
forty-six other branches of manufacturing
industry carried on in South Carolina, com?
prising from one to one hundred and fifty
establishments and manufacturing products,
to the value of from $1000 to $200,000 each,
per annum. These include blacksmith
sh xis, boot and shoe factories, brass foun?
dries, bread and other bakeries, brick kilns,
broom faotories, carriage and wagon build
log shop?, freight and passenger car works,
clothing manufactories, coffin and furniture
manufactories, cooper shops, gas fixture
manufactories, gan and pistol manofacto
ries, iron mills, furnaces and foundries,
leather tanneries and currying shops, distil
lerlea of malt and v?noos liquors, marble
and stone works, mineral and soda water
manufactories, molasses and syrup millB,
vegetable and colton seed oil mills, paint,
lead and zinc works, paper mills, photo
graph establishments, plumbing and gas
fitting shops, pump manufactories, rice
mills, quartz mills, saddle and harness fac?
tories, sash, blind and door factories, sail
lofts, ship yards, tlo, copper and sheet iron
works, tobacco and cigar manufactories,
weaving mills, wheelwright shops, wood
carving and turning shops, wool carding
and cloth dressing establish meets and wool?
len mills.
Tliis is a most gratifying exhibit of the
growth and development of manufacturing
enterprises in South Carolioa; and with this
record of what has already been accom?
plished, act! wi: h the evident increase of in?
terest on the part of the press and tbe
people of the Stau in this important source
of prosperity and stability, there is every
reason to expect a still more rapid growth
during the next few years, and an elevation
of South Carolina iu the census returns of
1880 to a stiil higher position in the scale of
comparative maoufacturing statistics.

Capital Punishment.
Among the various pulpit discourses in New
York on Sunday on the subject of tbe execu?
tion of Foster were those of Mr. Beecher and
one or two others, who "improved the occa?
sion" by declaring themselves opposed to
capital punishment. At a lime when the ex?
ercise ot the right and duty of society to pro?
tect itself was never more necessary than it
now ls lo New Tork, the sensational preach?
ers harangue In favor of a relaxation of the le?
gal penalties of crime. It seems a gross perver?
sion of the influence of the pulpit when the
only moral lt can draw- from the execution of
a murderer is that the penalty of a life for a
life is too severe. If tbe pulpit must discuss
I such matters, lt should enlorce tbe laws of
God and men, both as lo crime and Its penally,
not weaken their sanction. It might be ex?
pected that on such occasions the attention of
the congregation would be drawn lo the sol?
emn command, "Thou shall not kill," and to
its frequent and fearlul violations, and that
some sympathy should be shown with the
murdered as well as the murderers. The tide
of lawlessness will not be diminished in New
York so long as leading clergymen preach
funeral sermons over executed murderers,
designed to show that they have been harshly
dealt with, while not a word ls said of the hard
fate of their victims nor of the horrible Ini?
quity ot their crimes.
