Tho Shenandoah Valley is said to
have almost recovered from the deso?
lations of tho lato war. Notwith?
standing tho ravages of the many
armies that passed through it, and
the almost total destruction of houses,
fences and agricultural implements,
it is said that this year the farmers
will probably have tho finest and
largest wheat crop ever raised in that
region. The lower counties are
filling up with Pennsylvanians, who
aro quietly buying up all tho farms
they can get.
HEAVY BETTING IN ENGLAND.-At
tho recent Dorby, a Mr. Chaplin won
.?300,000. Thero wero plenty of bets
of .?50.000 and ?00,000. Ono man
lost ?120,000; another lost ?100,000.
The Priuco of Wales is reported to
have boen "interested" withChapliu,
and to have won ?70,000. The
Duke of Hamilton made the wild and
enormous bet ?1SO,000 against ?G,
000, but, fortunately for tho Duke,
the bet was cancelled, for tho horse
ho bet against won tho race.
The Postmaster-General announces
that the railroads, in future, must not
assume that they possess the franking
privilege.
