The cir? cumcision rite was performed with great pomp, September 14. General McDowall held Abraham, a deputy for Governor-elect Hoight held Isaac, and Senator Conness held Jacob. Three officiating clergymen perform? ed the ceromony of circumcision, each rabbi taking one child, and at the altar gold medals were hung upon the little ones, whose names were in? scribed upon the obverse, while the reverse of each medal respectively called to mind Abraham offering up Isaac, Isaao blessing Jacob, and Jacob s ladder. The Richmond Dispatch says : . 'The officers of the internal rovenue de? partment in this city, on Tuesday, made a descent on the private resi? dence of, a gentleman living at the Northern end of Twenty-fifth street, and found that he had been manu? facturing tobacco for some time in a private way. Two tobacco screws and 1,000 pounds of tobacco were seized. We learn that there are sove ral other private institutions of the same kind in tho city, and the detec? tives are after them." A new electrio light was tested on the Battery at New York, Tuesday night, which proved to be of im? mense power. A captain said the following morning that he had read his newspaper by it at a distance of six miles.
