(JfTRTHTVAS-THE TjCTTPn "\ "-A s.n.- I Tt respondent writes from Mississippi: "In your last Register I saw the ex? pression, 'Gross Purposes, a Xmas Story.' I am totally ignorant in regard to the expression 'Xmas;' please en? lighten me as to whence it is derived, aud why used." The letter X, being the initial of the title of the Redeemer, in Greek, has iu all ages since the Christiau era, heeu used as an abbreviation of the sacred name. As thus used, it is not the Latin ".r," bat the Greek chi. corresponding with the hard soaud "C?" iu "Christ." The discoverer of America was wont to ase for his signature the abbreviation "X P O Ferens"-not "x" aud "p," but the Greek chi and rho-that is, Christofe? rena, the equivalent of Christophorus; and it may be remarked that the "x" in thc old Spanish orthography, where "i" has sinoe been substituted, (as Xalapa, Oaxaca; now Jalapa, Oajaca,) st and H for the Oreek letter, and not for tho Latin character of corresponding form. In the old times, wheo paper wau a rare commodity, aud writiug a rare ac? complishment aud a laborious task, the ase of abbreviations was habitual. Thus originated the use of "ye" for (he, "ym" for them; and Xtian and Xmas were then as common ns Mr. and tte. are now. Wo aro reminded, by the subject of this explanation, of tho origin of thc fish as a sacred symbol, its name iu Greek, IcJtihys, beiug composed of tho initials of the phrase lesas Christus Theou Yios Sotcr-Jesus Christ, God's Son the Saviour.-Mobile Register. "LOVE THE UNION."-The most, serious charge brought against the Southern peo? ple by their Northern enemies is that they are "hostile to the Union." For argument's sake, graut it-who makes them so? No people ever yet gavo such evidence of their williuguess to go into the Union and become peaceable mem? bers of it-they have oveu humiliated themselves and surrendered every prin? ciple held dear by them in order to get there-why is it that they aro uot there and living iu peace with tho States of the North? Any houest man can see the reason plain ono agu. The men who are continually abusing us for "disloyalty to the Union," do nothing but strive to make that Union odious to us. The very moment everything gets quiet aud peace? able, and a spirit of fratcruity appears, these marplots get up some new villainy to irritate and inflamo our people toward tho Government, and what is more, for the express purpose of making us hate them and keeping the Union in u state of dis? ruption. ?Should the poor Southern worms turn when thus trodden upou, we hear a fresh cry of "disloyalty" and "hostility to the Union." This is hy? pocrisy and cowardice combined. The only enemies of the Union in this coun? try are to be found iu tho rauks of the radical party.-Savannah Republican. TRAGICAL, RESULT or NEU no SUPERSTI? TION.-On Thursday last, six negro men were committed to jail in this place, charged with having been engaged in an attack on the Saturday night previous on a negro man named Frank E mb rev, who waa shot in the arm aud side, and ut the same time his wife shot dead, three shots having been fired. It appears from the evidence given in on the preliminary trial, that Frank had become obnoxious to a number of tho negroes io the neigh? borhood, from a superstitious belief that he was a sort of necromancer, and could at will fill them with pains, lizards, ?fcc., that he could make a mark, and if any woman crossed it, she would be poisoned. A week previous to the murder they at? tacked his house with rooks, and beat him severely with sticks, ordering him to leave the couutry. Ile having failed to do HO, they returned on Saturday night, renewed the attack, in which the three shots were fired with the result stated. No white man was ia any way connected in the difficulty. [Jacksonville (Ala.J Republican. U. S. BRANCH MINT.-Wo aro sorry to learn that it hos been determined by the Federal Government to close the Mint, und sell tho buildings, grounds, Ara, at an early day. Located here, in the heart of the gold region, it has doue much to stimulate the development of the mines, and to attract attention to this species of property. We do not know what iuduces this blow at North Carolina, but certain it is, the Government at Wnshiugton has been felt by our people lately, only through its oppressions aud exactions. The Treasury canuot be so empty as to make this little curtailment, necessary. While thousands and millions aro squan? dered in the North and West, the South only knows the government through her sufferings and her wrongs. [Charlotte (JV. C.) Xetes. - FRAUDS-SIXT? PROMINENT BROOKLYN POLITICIANS INDICTED.-The grand jury, which during the past month has been engaged in taking testimony in the cases of persons oharged with having com? mitted frauds at the elections recently held in Brooklyu, N. Y., cnnie into court on Saturday and returned indictments against sixty persons for violation of the election laws. Among the persons in? dicted are William O. Late advices from Pettibinn, in regard j to the Bed River rebellion, are to the effect that Governor McDougall has uol called on Canada for troops, but relies or the loyal people of tho Territory to quell tho disturbance. A largo meeting wai held at Buffalo on Saturday night, anr much indignation expressed at tho re ported course of Governor McDougall, iu collecting British troops on American j soil. JOHN BROWN.-As is well known Queen Victoria has au atteudant unmet John Brown, for whom tho British peo plo havo conceived a cordial hatred Brown strikingly resembles tho lat Prince-Consort, aud hence Victoria' fancy for him. Very recently, the Queel had occasion to opeu in state thc ue^ Blackfriars Bridge. Ou that occasion Brown, in gorgeous army, rode iu th royal coach beside Her Majesty.
