Democrat, at the 1st, says : "One of the saddest affairs we have ever been called upon to record, occurred in Mn ? county, on Saturday, November 20 th. The faots, as we have gathered them, are these : "Emery Ackerman, a yoong man, twenty-five or thirty years of ago, left Boonsboro on the day mentioned to go to his father's, in Yell township, having with him his gan, and hunting as he journeyed along. When in Yell town? ship, nearly home, he fell into an old deserted well, thirty feet in depth. Upon the month of the well plank had been placed and oovered over with dirt. Over all the snow had fallen, completely hiding all evidences of the terrible pit. On to it he walked, and the rotten plank giving way, he was instantly hurled to the bot? tom of the welL Bot the saddest part of the story remains to be told. A portion of the old stone wall remained, and on to it he clambered. But above him there was no means of escape, nothing by which he could climb, nothing by which he conld clutch. Death stared him in the face. How he called for help, hoar npon hoar, throughout that long night, and the next day, and the next, only God knqws, for the echoes of the voice never pierced beyond the dark and dis? mal cavern into which he had fallen. Hope fled, and the King of Terrors con? fronted him. He scratched upon a stone the story of his entombment, and upon the fourth day he probably perished. On Friday, the sixth day, some one fell upon his tracks, which were yet im? printed in the snow, and coming to the well at once realized that a human being had been precipitated below. The search was made, and the facts, as we have re? cited them, brought to light. As yoong Ackerman did not live at home, it ia likely he was never missed, so that no search had ever been instituted. ONE OP THE LOST TRIBES.-One of the "lost tribes" bas at last turned up, safe and oouud, in the shape of a people called the Falashas, who inhabit a dis? trict in Abyssinia whioh has long re? mained a terra incognita and a blank space on the maps. They were visited by Mr. Halevy, a very intelligent French traveler, who has now communicated an account of his journey to tho French Geological Society. There were about 250,000 of the Fa? lashas. They speak an Agna dialect called Falashina, or Kaillina, and into this language they have translated a Gheez version of the Old Testament. They do not practico polygamy. They circumcise their male children on the seventh day. Their proper names are derived from Hebrew, Gheez, and Amha? ric. The institution of purification, ia practiced ; the children are taught the Bible, the psalms, prayers, and sacred history. Ia the synagogues the sexes sit apart. Incense is burned during the ? services. Their religion? w*r-~f*T6 i turned to Jern?><?i<>?n> But their ideas of the Messiah are very indistinct. They aro wholly unacquainted with j Hebrew, and know nothing of the cere? monies instituted after the time of Ezra. They have a religious literature written in the style of the M id rath. They keop the Sabbath rigidly ; fast on Mondays and Thursdays ; keep the 9th of Ab to commemorate the destruction of Jerusa? lem. They wash before and say grace after eating ; they hove a traditional mode of slaughtering animals for food ; they practice commemorative sacrifices on the holy days, and also for the repose of the souls of the dead. Their women enjoy equality with men. They hold slaves, but liberate them after a servitude of six years. ENGLISH MANNERS.-A London journal ! says that an important question to be ' answered at the present time is, "Why have Christianity and civilization failed to give Englishmen the manners of gen? tlemen ?" and asserts that on reading the account of the inauguration of the Suez Ganai by the Times' correspondent, it ia impossible not to be struck with tho su? periority of the Arab over the English? man in this respect. It says : "We read that the Arabs make way for a stranger with promptness and courtesy, never stare or affect the ill-bred ease, or in? dulge in the vulgar chaffing of far better dressed mobs in the lands nearer home. On the other hand, we read of the ri? diculous and unreasonable grumbling of the Christian guests of the viceroy, and of a gentleman demanding an audience of his Highness for tho purpose of com? plaining that he had been put to sleep in a double-bedded room." 1 Canned Goods. 1 /"lfl CA8E8 Ovsters, Salmon, Lobster, JUJU Peachea, Tomatoes and Preserves; fresh and for sale low by E. PAIN KILLER-A CURES FOR DIPII THEHIA.-All interested, please read the following- extract from a letter from Hrs. Ellon B. Mason, wife of Boy. Francis Mason, Tounghoo, Birmah: * * * My son was taken violently sick with diphtheria, cold chills, horning fover and sore throat. I counted one morning ten litt lo TOBioles in his throat, very white, and his tongue, towards the root, jost like a water? melon, full of seeds; the remainder coated as thick as a knife-blade. So many children have diod around here, I was afraid to call a phyaioian, and I thought I would try your Pain Killer for a gargle, with small donen in? wardly. I did so, and found the garglo inva? riably cut off the vesicles, and he raised them up, orton covered with blood. He was taken on Sunday; on Wednesday, his throat was cloar, and his tonguo rapidly clearing off. I also used it as a liniment, with castor oil and hartshorn, for his neck. It seemed to mo a wonderful cure, and I can but wish it could be known to the many poor mothers in our land who aro losing so many children hy this dreadful disease. I have found your Pain Killer ono of thc most valuable medicines ever used in Birmah. Once I was stung by a very large black acorpion; the pain was indescriba? ble. I immediately applied thc Pain Killer, (for I never travel without it,) again and again, and in half an hour my foot waa well. Dr. Walton writes from Concho ct. on : "Your Pain Killer cures this newHi?eano-l)iphttici-ia, or Sore Throat-that in so alarmingly preva? lent hero; and it has not been known to fail in any instance when used in time. This fact you should make known to the world." ( It is need in thia disease as a garglo and lotion, as woll as a tonic and stimulant.) In Halifax, where this disaso prevailed for many months in its most malignant form, the use of PKBBY DAVIS' "PAIN KILLER" was inva? riably attended with tho most favorable ro B tilt B , when it wan used ero tho disease had mado too much progress to preclude the use of so powerful a stimulant. I The great Family Liniment of the age, for in? ternal and external uso, combined in one med? icine. Not since thc introduction of modern Cho miotry and analytical research into the hidden mysteries of tho vogctablo kingdom, has there been discovered a ehr..neal product of such extraordinary curative powers aa the "Quaker Liniment;" this justly celebrated medicine was discovered and prepared by a Quaker Doc? tor, connected with the naval service of the country, his practico was confined to thosa se? vero cases which usually result from a sea? faring life. Rheumatisms, Acuto and Chronic, Colds, Conghs, Cramps, Chilblains, Fevers, Neuralgia; indeed, all acuto disorders requi? ring prompt and energetic medicine. The treatment of these complaints with the ordi? nary medicine of the day failed to make a euro or relieve the patient. Disappointed and mor? tified at the result, and stimulated by the promptings of a pnre humanity for the Buf? fering, as well as a professional pride, ho, after much labor and study, compounded bis Sreat Liniment, called tho QUAKER LINI [ENT. This medicine is remarkable for the peculiar property it possesses in being an in? ternal and external remedy at the same time, and differs from all other medicines in its ac? tion in arresting disease. It is taken internally for Colds, CoughB, Consumption, Cramps, Fever and Ague, Head? ache, Asthma, Dysentery, Colic, Acid Stomach, Cholera, Cholera Morbus, Sick Stomach, Pains in tho Stomach, Diarrhoea. It is used externally for Sore Throat, Diph? theria, Swelling of the Glands of the Nock, Head-ache, Neuralgia, Face-aohe, Tooth-ache, Rains in the Back, on the Side orin the Heart, StilT Nock. Lumbago, Rheumatism, it is espe? cially good; Pains in the Bones, or in the Muscles or Joints, for Stings of Insects, Snake Bites, Itching Humors in the Skin; for aU these, and for more than wo can enumerate, it is tho great remedy.
