i leoiMi. I have bat one enemy in the world—a confounded fellow culled Ego. lie und I V ure tho beat possiblo friend* formerly.— Whoa' were boyu together—thnngfi he got me iuto a few school-scrapes now and ngiiin, and once made me run away from fcujua—tuxl had a murry time of it on the whole. Hut when 1 grew up to manhood he Leciune my ruin. lie spent all uiy money |»e watiid.iiiflUt o»l my drinking too mach lirundy he urged ine on to quarrel he taught me how to gamble in short he un dertook to «Mutg iu« by express to the devil. The wor«\ of it is, that the fellow has, llrid always had, a eortain fascination for Hie. lie has such a gay, plausable way of loading me aetrav. Whenever I am led in W" t«tfptntio!\ Tiy him, und the thing is all over, and 1 am mourning over my past fol lies, 1 invariably iind myself trying to ex cuse Esro. lie did not mean it should end so. Tht! thing might have turned out dif ferently. Anybody—why not Ego?—would have Imctj deceived. Whan a couple of years ago, I undertook to keep a ichelor'ti establishment of S( 1 :n ilid proportions on two thousand dollars a year, it was Ego that perstiaded me to this rash step. "My dear fellow," said Ego, "you will save by it. You can get a nice ainnll house for €vo hundred dollars a year. Your dress will cost you live hundred more and for liftuen additional you can supply your mod est table and personal expenses. This, you observe, will be five hundred more than your prasent incomo, but lhatsiaall sum you will more than realize by having a home of your own. You will remain more within doors: you will work more and the chances are that instead of adding five hundred you will add a thousand dollars to your income." I took the house, at a rent of six hundred hut as Kgo said, what ditTercnce did hundred dollars make to me in the long run. 1 furnished it that cost mo two thousand, the payment of which, as I have no ready money, 1 had to inst.il with monthly install ments, with a mortgage on the goods to my creditor. I was obliged to have two ser vants, who robbed inc. 1 au not inhospita ble, and, as I have a large nc|uaintaiicc of young men about town who like a good bot tle of wine. My first three months in tny new domicile was a scene of dinners, suppers, und champagne breakfasts. Not much work done that quarter. But Ego told me that next quarter I could make up for lost time. Somehow i didn't. How could I? Men dined with me every day. From diuner they remained to supper. Generally had too much wine to go home. Plenty of spare bods in a bachelor's house, you know. Of course a breakfast next morning. Who would think of giving an ordinary breukfast to a lot of seedy men who went to bed the night before half drunk, and who wake up with unstruug nerves and a craving for stimulus'/ Overture of champagne cock tails then, un hour afterward, ousters, dev iled turkey, omlets, pati de Joi grits, itrmi taxse, of Kirch- wasser, brandy and' Cureoa. After all, ci gars und conversation far into the day. Meals such as this can not in any country be called inexpensive, and a scries of thorn recurring three times a week brings up the household bills to quite an aristocrutic pro portion. Of course, there was soon a hole in my ballad. My furniture was seized. Not hav ing been alile to pay my rent, I was uncer emoniously ordered out of possession. I had a host of infuriated tradesmen hovering around me, as the Cossacks hovered around Napoleon's armv in retreat. To crown all my misfortunes I had to board. Board after six months of such luxury as mine! The reverse was terrific. 1 have been in difficulty ever since, but would Imvo saved enough to have gotten myself out of them long ago, if it had not been that this abominable Ego is nlways se ducing me into spending in some frivolity the money destined fur a better purpose.— Ho whispers to me that I must have n new coat—one of the lute fashion. Mine has been out of date nearly three weeks. He is enraptured with a breast pill at Hall and JSlaeks—a charming trifle of eighty-live dollars. Ho is consumed with envy when he perceives young llelzebub weaving long winter boots, when 1 have only the ordinary Wellingtons. 1 must have a pair of enam eled leather. So the fellow goes on. There's no reMisting him, he has such a pleasant, plausible way with him. lie has a wonderful knack of prestn ing the bright side of things to you. lie is adangorous fellow, this Ego. Seriously, 1 havi- been eoagitating for some time quarrelling outright with Ego, only I don't know how to accomplish it. 1 can't cut him, for the fellow won't be cut. It's no use to tell him to leave me, for he won't take the hint. He has been with me so long that 1 have become a sort of second nature to him. 1 can't fight him on account of our near relationship: and I can't kick him because my gymnastic education has been neglected. 1 have sometimes thought of a refuge—suieide. Cut if I were to take luy brains out, I am not quite sure that 1 would escape from Ego. a The Fall River Monitor tells the following pood story: "A countryman (farmer) went into a store in Iloston the other day, and told the keeper a neighbor of his had en trusted him with some money to expend to the best advuntnge, and he meant to do it where he would be best treated. He had been used very well in lioston by the traders, and he would not part with his neighbor's money until he found a man who would treat hiui about right. With the utmost suavity the trader says: 'I think 1 can treat you to your liking how do you want to bo treated?' 'Well,' said the farmer, with a leer in his eve, 'in the first place 1 want a glass of toildv,' which was forth coming. 'Now I will have a nice cigar,' *a$s the countryman. It was promptly han ded him, leisurely lighted, and then throwing himself buck, with his feet as high us his head, ho commenced puffing away like a lutchutan. 'Now what do you want to purchase'' savs the store-keeper. Country man—'My neighbor handed mo when I left homo to buy a plug of tobacco— Ime you got the articles'' C^"An acquaintance of ours boasts that his virtues are in everybody's mouth, lie is di-cidonly mistaken. His vices are in oth er people's mouths, and his virtues all in his own eye. l7"A fellow slipped down on an icy pave ment, and, in a sitting posture, muttered, "I have no desiro to see the town burn down, but 1 do wish the streets were in ashes." !^5?""Sir" said a blustering little man to a religions oppouent, "to whataect do you suppose I belong?" "Well, I don't know, but should think you belonged to the class generally culled m-sects."
