Last week was the week of the New
Year thus far. We have neither time to
write nor space to print elaborate details.
On Wednesday tho ''Labor Union"' call
ed a meeting and nominated a "provision
al" ticket, hcadod by John M. Burbr'ulge
for Mayor and D. Drummond for Marshal.
On Thursday evening the Republicans held
a meeting and on motion or resolution of
some kind, the Democrats and Republicans
agreed to meet the next evening and make
a "half and-half ticket. They met, en
masse and after a stormy session, during
which about 100 "Labor Unionists" with
drew because they would not be recognized
as voters there, the following combination
ticket was reported and adopted G. C.
Cone, Mayor T. M. Hopkins, Marshal
W. 11. lvinnaird, Treasurer Rob. IJuiglcy,
Att'y Isaac Mathews, Assessor 5 Trustees
or COUNCILMAN, Ward No. 1,G. Townsend.

A. B. Pear sail: No. 4, S. Miller (hearing
that Mr Miller was absent and it not being
known when lie would return, the commit
on tickets substituted the name of D. D.
Fraser.)
On the next evening, (Friday) a regular
democratic caucus was called—nothing
done except to adjourn and affiliate with
the "Labor Union*' meeting on Saturday
jvening. At that meeting, Judge Baugh
presided, and the following names were
ticketed: II.Kcnnedy, for Mayor, Fred.
Bergman, for Marshal. Fred. Hencke,
Treasurer A. J. Jordan, Atty.: P. N.
Drake, Assessor. 1st Ward, Sam. De
Haven 2d, M. O'Brien and J. R. Jarrctt
3d, Jn». McLenahan 4th, II. Guiheil.
On the same night, tho Republicans met
on call, and made a "straight ticket," to
wit, in their order: Cone, James Allen.
Cro'ike, Quigley, Mathews, George It.
Luther, Jarrctt and Burdick, A. B. Pear
MIII. and Fraser.
Well, business commonctd. In aach a
general fusion everybody did as he pleas
ed sans reproach. This olTicc did about
$70 worth of work for the day in tickets
and proclamations, and you bet tho City
was lively. The "foreign*' element was
strongly appealed to by the Labor Union
Combination, and the "citizens ticket*'
was scoop-ed plightly. Below is the vote:

ICE.—Tho Boyle Bros, with Ilvfttting
& Basset as silent partners (such is our
information) are putting up ice on the
island opposite, for spring »hi pincnt
south. An Alton Company is also en
gaged in the business near tho Lowtr
Town Pr. dn Chien shore. The ice of the
lower river has not been good this winter,
and hence this speculation. We were at
the Boyle & Bros, ranche on Monday to
look it over. Tbey employ 10 to 15 nu n
and thred horses. One horse draws nn it e
p'ow (something like a cross-cut^ saw)
across the lield of ice and checkers it into
ob!on 'S of 2 by 4 feet. These oblong
are split apart by an attendant who float.
ihem down the current to the foot of an
inclined plane leading to the ice depot.
Here is a hoik that grasps the block to
the hook is attached a cable, to tho cuble
a pair of horses on he land, and up the
block must come. Several men ure tlu-re
to receive it and put it in position. It is
qu.uk work, but not by any means a
u^ht employment. We regret to know
that Mr. lleniy Boyle got,his hand badly

Monday by entangling with a
portion of the cable in guiding one of the
bio sks of ie« to the depot. Their build
ing is 90 by 40 and their height of iee
will bo 10 feet it is now full, and the
frame for another building of equal size
is rcad\' to bo filled when tho weather
moderates a little. At the present writ
ing, (zero—127) the ice makes faster than
it can bo chopped loose, and business is
necessarily suspended. The Aiton Com
pany work about the Bame number of
hands as the Boyle Bros. Each Company
will put up about 5,000 tons, or Four
Million pounds for shipment south. The
tylcs will also put up their usual supply
for City use, R'y shipment north wc&t,
ami sales to Steamers. Cawelti & Berg
man are piling hundreds of tons the
Williams Bros, arc "on it" for home or
shop use (butchers,) and Budde is packing
iee for Btcamhoat or private sales. Esti
mating tho "crop" put up at McGregor,
at reasonable figures, say 14 million
pounds, and this, at one quarter cent per
pound, in the house, works up to £35,000.
Wo hope all our ice-dealers will realise
profits, but ^as this business is going

Suicide of Allller.
On Tuesday morning, March 2d, the
Jailor nt Pr. du Chien, on opening the
door of Dr. Miller's cell, found him bang
ing by the neck dead, dead I The report
in Chicago papers of a vigilance commit
tee's agency in tho work, is all sraokc.
The prisoner tore a coarse cotton sheet in»
to strips and tied his feet by handkerchief
and suspenders to a bolt, BO that he could
not reach the floor, provided his intent to
kill himself might change. Reports to
us show this to be the most deliberately
planned case of suicide on rocord. From
overheard conversations between the de
ceased and another prisoner, the confes
sions of tho deceased as to previous mur
ders in Hamburg, Germany, and in the
United States, their intentions to escape,
the Jailor, (Ex-sheriff Mengcs) shows I)r.
