Take it altogether the show was a good one. The fire-works were fair the ball at the Cambrian a decid ed success No accident occurred that we hear of. Gov. Merrill was with us on the occasion. The fanastics on horseback caused much merriment. A. M. Goddard, foreman of the TIMES received a dispatch from Lex ington, 111., dated July Gth, announc ing the very dangerous illness of his brother Edmond and requesting him to come at once. He left us next morning per train, and at 10 a. m. his family were advised by telegraph, I1Edmond is dead." The deceased has been long sick with consumption.— We did not know the the departed one but our sympathies are awake to the pain of those left to battle with Life. Prof. Perry notes us that Mr. LAW LER has purchased the Prairie du Chien College building and that he will con vert it into a Catholic Institution. The Prof, will go to Ann Arbor, Michigan, as Supt. of schools. We are vain enough Jto publish a handsome complim't from his pen Although differing from the TIMES in politics I highly appreciate it and deem it the best newspaper in this re gion. Thank you, warmly, Professor. On Saturday last our city was aston ished by the receipt, per mail, to many parties, of a pair of elegant cards from Stillwater, N. Y. On one was "Mr. & Mrs. George D. Gardner/' on the oth er, Belle S. Dickinson." What this may mean we do not certainly know be realise we received no statistics. The ^presumption is that he and Belle are I! tarried! Next week we will probably ceive advices in detail. For the pre nt, we elevate a claret admixture and »ast Health and Happiness to yourself id Mrs. Gardner. Come out and see i. The bcyjs" here sant to inter ew" you. Mrs. Daynes has removed her large ck of millinery goods to French and ichmond's Block. MARRIED.—At Prairie du Obien, July |8tb, 1870, WU. BLAODEEN to Miss CATHA RINE OLSTEN, all of McGregor. D. II. Gill, Dentist, McGregor, Iowa, opposite Cambrian Ilall. All operations puUiaing (Q profwiion performed* MARRIED. At the M. E. Church, Elkader, Iowa, Tuesday evening, July 5th, '70, by Rev. B. F. Taylor, JOHN H. AN DRICK, junior editor of the NORTH IOWA TIMES, to Miss MATTIE J. SCOTT, daughter of G. S. C. Scott, Esq., of McGregor. The above announcement ("by au thority") pleases us. Ordinarily it would give us a wide scope for comm't, but as our editorial brother never did the like before it is proper that we go slow. Jt)HN is diffident, reticent, kind-hearted, and we owe it to a most agreeable partnership of seven or eight years—a social one of 12 years—that we respect his modesty and forbear to use language which would pain the youth. Oh, would'nt we like to come down on the brave bachelors of our acquain tance who have talked defiantly of the charms of female eyes and forms, and told us that the influence of beau tiful women could not move them from resolved stoicism But we must not indulge in sentiment. Courtship is a myth a beautiful phase in life when imagination dances gaily thro' the brain and smothers us with hap piness. Matrimony is a cooler atten dant—a fixed fact—except in Indiana or Chicago. Our beloved business partner and most esteemed social chum has depart ed the life of singleness. In printer's language he is now one half of a "doublet" and not the better half" either. On Tuesday about 2 p. m. he bade as farewell in a most affectionate mannor and agonized our soul by re marking that he must leave us! We had been suspecting him for months and we played sorry a moment. Re lief soon came when he announced in atone husky with excitement, Col. I am about to take a wife!" Startled at this strange expression from our inex perienced friend we impertinently asked "whose wife?" He emphatically replied My own Being unaware of hin matrimonial association with any model of Eve, the first and only landlady of Paradise, we further in quired who had been so unfortunate as to entangle his affections in the meshes of live-to-gether during life.— The head of this notice tells his ans wer. Twice have we (that is us) cross ed the Rubicon but on neither occas ion did we feel the degree of emotion which the junior TIMES exhibited as he gave us the last pressure of friend ship on Tuesday. We gazed hopeful ly upon his retreating form, and—but words fail us. Knowing to whom he was about to be united knowing her as one of the most amiable of McGregor's young la dies knowing tlie high respectability of her parentage, her relatives and as sociates, we were inclined to rejoice, but a feeling of half jealousy came over us because we feared JOHN wo'd like Mrs. Andrick better than his old partner! We wept. The happy couple," as the stereo typed phrase is, remained at the Bige low House amidst hosts of friends, re ceived congratulations, and left on Wednesday for Clermont, Fayette, West Union, Decorah and home. On Friday or Saturday they will probably see McGregor where they will meet none but those who rejoice in the hap piness which long attachment and true affection have led to this most suitable marriage. Our office unani mously votes O. K.» and the people all say amen I Died. At McGregor, on the 8th of July, 1870, of Cholera Infantum, JUDBON HENRY, (ag«d 10 months and 12 days) ae-jond "Gone, jnit aerate the river. motlMlf Waiting on the other aide." Mr. k Mrs. John II. The guests were most esteemed acquaintances, the host and hostess are too well known and too highly appreciated to require comraen. datioa. Will the McGregor Band please regard us und«r special obligation for their most excellent music and friendly call on ourselyes and friends at the COL'S house. It. 11. TAX.—Our election went off on Saturday without any violence A poll of 560 votes showed a majority "For the tax" of 281! Hardly an opposition. The M. & St. P. Railway was charged with controlling its employees to oppose the tax and yet they almost unanimous ly supported it! Extremely curious, but the report had a winning effect—"good enough Morgan till after election." We all want the R. R. from Dubuque —time will bring it to us. Some of our folks thought the pledge of 5 pr et. to a slate company for transfer to specu lative parties eastward was not desirable at present, and they voted against the experiment. They are entitled to their opinions. 1 a CAN'T HELP IT.-Absence and the sickness of our entire corps the past week, with the exception of one printer, Mr. Ham street, upsets as on time. Mr. Godard away, Mr. Wallis confined to his room with inflammatory rheumatism, Mr. Dy mond "out of sorts" with billions attack and Mr. Fordney, (our Dan) not at all well, it is somewhat strange we get out a TIMES at all. It is said Providence is al ways good, but we think be might divide our embarassments a little more equally. Please, dfih'.t 9end them all ia gna *e«k, after this. RUMOR has it that the body of a girl once missed from Andrew Thompson's employ (years ago) has been discovered in an old well or sink-hole near his farm. Rumor further has it that the bones of a peddler, lost many years since ia that neighborhood, have been found. We pre sume these are sensation reports.
