Monroi, A. A. G. Our citiseni will give the two Muscatine companies in the regiment an appropriate re ception on their arrival hoi#. Tlldy ttty be expected on Monday. ABRITAX or THE VBTKSAN8—ThSIbRkCIP- tion.—Yeaterday morning, about half past fivo o'clock, our citizens were awakened, by the stirring notes of fife ar.d drum, to the fact that the veterans of the 11th Iowa regi ment had arrived. Although it was known they were on the route home, it was not ex pected they would arrive for a couple of days yet, and therefore no preparations had been made to receive them in a befitting wanner. Citizens, however, rushed to the steamboat landing and gave the boys a cordial welcome home. Nine companies disembaiked at this point, seven belonging to the 11th ft&d two to the 8th regiments, as follows: ELCVBVTH RBOIMBIIT. Oo. A. of Muecatine, Captain Atiderten. Co. 0, of Oalnmbus City, Captain Seal. Oo. D, of %tltou, Llautosist K«an. Oo* K. of ptoa, UtpUln MeLoonty. Oo. F, of Washington, Captain Walker. Oo. H, of Masoatiae, Ltaataaant Magv»on. Oo. 1, of Moaaattna, LU«.«o«ot Willi. EIGHTH lifcC.IMKXT. Oo. 0, of Washington, Oaptaib Rankin Oo. I. of lonlMOount Captain Wicks. Soon after their arrival everybody, with a few exceptions, was busy preparing for the wel come supper which it was determined to give them in the evening—the ladies in baking, preparing and collecting substantial and delicacies the gentlemen, in decorating the hall and otherwiae making themselves useful —the result of which was a most bountiful and sumptuous repast spread in Tremont Hall last night. Never before in the history of oar city—so famous for its public dinners —was such an abundance of almost every thing tempting to the palate collected togeth er in so short a space of time. Everybody's heart was in the work. The hall was beautifully decorated with festoons of flags. Cver the stage was a large etgle, tho shadow of whose out-stretched wings fell full upon the American flag on which the wife of the President of the Demo cratic Club spit, in this city, on the birthday of the immortal Washington. Around the walls were arranged pictures. Two long tables, running the entire length of the hall, each capable of accommodating one hundred guests, were loided down with the good things of life until not a place could be found whereon to put another dish, and yet any amount of provisions were stored in baskets, boxes and pans for want of room—so great was ths supply. The tables were tastily arranged and presented a magnificent appear ance. The soldiers—to the number of two hun dred, many having left for their homes—were called in about seven o'clock, and did ample justice to the viands. During supper excel lent music was discoursed by Eickhoff's string band. After the soldiers had finished eating, their wives, mothers, sisters and sweethearts partook of the collation, and after them, the citiiens in general. The welcome speech was delivered by Henry O'Conner, Esq., followed by the siog ing of "Johnny Schmoker" and other songs by the young ladies'. After supper, the tables were cleared away, and the remainder of the evening passed away in daocing. The wtlcorae was a glorious one, worthy of the brave heroes and creditable to the patri otism of Muscatine county.—Daily, 23d. SBASON Abramoehxnts or THE Nobthikn LIME PACKET COMPANY.—The arrangements of the Northern Line Packet Company pro vide for a daily line to Rock Island and a tri weekly line to St. Paul. The following named steamers will compose the St. Paul line: SockM- State-...—....... .Gap'aln Jam«a Ward. Hawkejre Slate. I. Mason. Northerner........... P. A. Alford. Davenport T. J. Buford. Baranna... C. B. Call. All the above boats are first-class side wheelers, mostly new, and are in excellent condition for business. Their officers are well known and popular river men. One of them (Capt. Ward) has had nearly a quarter of a century's experience in plowing these wa ters, and has never failed in making a safe passage. The public will doubtless appreci ate the enterprise of the Northern Line Packet Compary in supplying ns with a daily line of excellent packets. Thb CONTISTED ELECTION CASB.—The County Court decided yesterday that it bad jurisdiction in the case of Viele t*. Funck, in the matter of the contested election for Mayor. To this decision Mr. Funck's attorneys filed a bill of exceptions and let the matter drop, taking the advice of the Courier —Daily, 18A. by "treating the proceedings with the most silent and in dignant contempt." Daniel M. Lambert, Esq., was nominated for Judge on the part of Mr. Vielo. The trial of the case was set for Tuesday, the 12th of April. As the sugges tions of the Courier have thus far been fol lowed out, we suppose we may look for blood if the decision is averse to Mr. Funck, and efforts are made to oust him. Where are the thousand men to protect Mr. Funck in his office to come from? W'll a draft be re quired or will the City Council with its ac customed liberality offer bounties to volun teers Will negroes be accepted aa volun teeers An early answer is desired.—Daily, 19 (H. Dr. Hershe was called and rendered all the assistance in bis power to al leviate the sufferings of the unfortunate man, but his recovery is considered very doubtful. GOOD SKATING.—The cold weather has formed a field of ice between the steamboat and ferry landing, as smooth aa glass, where on the most excellent skating may be had.— QuiU awb at enjoyed tbojpoct Wedaes- THE Eil|KOVD CASE CIDED, The City Htack Ibr Over Two XX and red Thousand Oollar*. The case of Myer & Stucken tt. the City of Muscatine, was dccided by the Supreme Court of the United StateB a few days since in favor of the plaintiffs. This case has been in litigation for a number of years, and car ried through all the lower courts, in all of which the decisions have heretofore been in favor of the city, u'ltil the flrwl appeal, when the city was decided liable in the sum of $130,OJK), with, we suppose, compounded in terest for seven yeara^at the r.ite of 10 per cent, per annum, atnov^'-ig, in all, to over TWO HUNDB1D THOUSAND ^DOLLARS I The plea of the defendant was that the city of Masc&tine had no authority to assist in building railroads, or to take stock in the same, and that at the time said bonds wero sold to the plaintiffs by the officers of the railroad company, they had full knowledge that said bonds had been issued for the pur pose of aiding in the construction cf the M. 4 M. Railroad." The plaintiffs demurred to this plea, and the District Court of the Unit ed States overruled the demurrer. The Su preme Court reversed the decision, holding the plea to be bad and the demurrer to be well taken, Justice Miller dissenting. This settlos the question and we must make the best of a bad bargain. The city will of course be entitled to one hundred and thirty thousand dollars worth of stock in the road. Ths Fight av Yizoo.—The following in teresting account of the late fight at Yazoo City, Miss., we extract from a private letter written by Captain Lyman Banks, of this city, commander of company K, 8th Louisi ana regiment: I arrived with the regiment near Green ood, about two hundred and sixty miles The other three companies, C, and K, were in the forts, with orders to hold them, which was easily done, as there was no attack made upon them. Had thzre been we would surely have been taken, as there was but one company in each fort, and the most that could have reiniorced them for half an hour was the companies from the other two forts near by. Thankful are we that we escaped, and to the valor of the troops is it due. Of eighteen officers and orderlies engaged eleven were wounded. One has since died, and another is not expected to live. The expedition had to march across from Liver pool Heights, forty miles. We arrived and went into our old camp Wednesday. 3P1 We take pleasure in recommending to the public, as an efficient and trustworthy attorney, Allen Broomhall, Esq., whose card will be found among, the new advertisements. Mr. B. has recently removed from Atalissa to this city, which he will make his permanent heme. Although quite a young man, he has established an enviable reputation for strict honesty, rigid punctuality and untiring ener gy—qualities which, united with his temper ate and regular habits, cannot fail to com mend him to those having business in bis line. We bespeak for him a fair share of legal business. He may be found at the County Judge's office, in the Court House. CSLKBBATION OF THB ANNIVEBSABT Row Among DE- from Vicksburg, on the 21st of February. actions, stating that the relation of the after noon's proceedings would be a pretty story Soon after the fleet started down the River Yazoo, running a short distance and then stopping to take on cattle, corn and cotton, so that we did not arrive at Yazoo until Sun day evening, the 28th. We commenced landing quietly but soon heard firing from our cavalry thrown out in front, and by the time the well men were ashore we were or dered out to meet an attack. There proved to be only a small force, which was driven away without much loss. That night we stood to arms, and kept a sharp look out all the next day. Towards eveoing eight com panies were called into town, companies and remaining on picket. We went into camp on the 1st of March on the line we were to defend, which looked like tempting an en gagement, for two regiments to pretend to hold four miles of country. That night and the next day we were called into line and double quicked to our fortB, by firing on the picket line The morning of the 3d inst., after being up a good part of the night, companies and K, under my command, started about 4 o'clock to form an ambuscade, the plan being for our cava'ry to attack the enemy at dawn, and if pressed, fall back on the road near which we were lying concealed. Our plan was carried out, but the rebels did not seem inclined to fall into the trap, as, after laying there till nearly noon, we went home to breakfast with out firing a shot. The 4th of March was spent quiet'y, as the rebels were making preparations for an attack. With our small force holding so long a line, and the rebels with two brigades in front, we could scarcely hope for success in the battle we knew to be near, but all de termined to do their best. The next morning—the 6th—we were at it that is, pirt of our forces. The main at tack was on the fort occupied by the 11th Il linois infantry. Quite a number came over and ran our pickets in, but did not come near enough to engage us. At the same time they sent three regiments around so as to come in the upper part of the town. Seven compa nies of our regiment and one of the 11th Illi nois were sent to meet them, and fought them foot by foot through the place, being driven back almost the length of the town, when about 3 o'clock the tide turned, and step by step they were driven from the place. Of THB Battlb or Shiloh.—It has been decided to hold a State celebration of the anniversary of the battle of Shiloh, on the 6th of April, in the city of Muscatine, at which all veterans at home on furlough throughout the State, fire companies, &c., are invited and expected to be present. The arrangements are in the hands of a competent committee, and a grand celebration may be expected. We will give further notice of this affair hereafter. 83^ In the Douse, on Saturday last, Mr. McNutt made an unsuccessful effort to secure tha location of the State Arsenal building at Muscatine. The bill passed, locating the Ar senal building at Des Moines. Mr. McNutt also moved to locate the Deaf and Dumb Asylum at West Liberty, in this county. The motion was lost. The bill, which located the Asylum at Des Moines was also lost by SO to 47. Throat Disease?.—"We would call atten tion to 'Brown's Bronchial Troches.' We have found them efficacious in allaying Irri tation in the Throat and Bronchia, and would commend them to the attention of Public Speakrs, and others troubled with affections of the Throat. They are also an excellent remedy for Hoarseness resulting from cold." Congregationilist, Botion. Small Pox.—We learn that this loathsome disease is prevailing to an alarming extent in a portion of Seventy-Six and Cedar town ships, in this county. Some twelve or fifteen cases are reported in the neighborhood of the brick church." The Veteran 12th Regiment.—The vet erans of the 12th Iowa infantry—four hun dred in number—passed up the river Tues day, about noon, on the steamer Island Oity. They go to Dnbuque for furloughs. It sveins the oxen roasted on the occasion were furnished by a trusty and trusting member of the Hook, who relied upon tho promises of his brethren for pay, which, not forthcoming in due time, considerably riled the victimized Cop. He has since kept up such an incessant dunning of all his brethren, that to get rid of his im portunities, a meeting was calle 1 at the school house to devise ways and means of liquidat ing the debt. The appointed day came, and with it the gathering of the snakes at the school house and the creditor, who, like Poe's raven, would not be denied, or rather like Shy'ock, demanded his flesh, or its equivalent. The object of the meeting was stated, when a row immediately ensued breihren~i^Boc«nt'ly "inquired what had becomo of the money contributed by them before the barbecue for the purpose of procuring beeves Others insinuated that the committee were better off by just the amount contributed, which soft impeach ment was indignantly denied by the commit tee, and as indignantly reiterated by tho en raged contributors to the sinking fund. Criminations and recriminations were bandied back and forth, and the dispute ran high. An Irishman in the crowd, taking advantage of the confusion, pocketed a Barlow knife belonging to the teacher, which was lying oo the table. No sooner was it missed than a great hue and cry, entirely drowning and si lencing the others, was made by the loser. Order w«s restored, the doors locked and search made, resulting in the finding of the missiug article upon the person of the Irish man, who stoutly resisted the search. One of the crew, heartily ashamed of the pro ceedings, and in hopes of preventing further disturbance, appealed to them touching their indeed to get out among the Republicans, and into tbe columns of theat infernal Abolition sheet, the Journal. A big, brawny black smith mistaking the latter word for smiths, peeled and went for the Irishman, laying him out Irishman's friend served brawny black smith the same way intimate acquaintance of the blacksmith sought and obtained an in troduction to the friend of the Irishman, and was in turn introduced to other friends, who gave him a warm reception. Soon the row became general, and for a time the fur flew thick and fast," and so did inkstands, books, slates, chairs and fists. A Good Sentiment.—Hon. J. A. Parvin, in a letter to us from Desmoines, regretting his inability to join with our citizens in giving a public reception to our brave boys of tbe 11th regiment, adds: Permit me to express the sentiment of my heart.— The Eleventh Iowa Infantry—For their gitient endurance of fatigue, for their bravery in battle, and for the sacrifices they have made for their country, they are entitled to the highest honor and gratitude of a grate ful people."
