When to Cut Wheat.—There is a right and a wrong time in which to cut wheat. As the result of a careful exper iment made by a correspondent of the German town Telegraph, it has been as certained that the proper time to cut wheat is when the grain in the middle of the ear can be crushed between the fln ors and leave nothing but the husk and a thick pulp, without any fluid around its edges. How this cruel war is desolating de voted hearthstones and cuttiug off' the best young men of the land! 'Tis fearful record that is now being written in blood and tears. Upon whom does the responsibility rest Not, assuredly, upon those who are prosecuting the war solely for the purpose of restoring the Union and establishing a permanent peace. "Tell the^traitors all around you, That their cruel words we know— In every battle kill our soldiers, By the help they lend the foe." -Daily, 9th. 1ft. Howard Marshall, formerly an employe of this office, gave us a call yes terday. He has had an eventful career since leaving Muscatine, four years ago. He was at Vicksburg at the breaking Out of the rebellion, and was forced with all other northern men, to take sides against the flag of his country. He suc ceeded, however, by virtue of being a printer, in keeping out of the service, and worked eighteen months at his trade in Richmond. in September last the sweeping conscription act took him into the rebel army as a conscript. On the 17th of that month he was captured by our forces. During the entire winter he was a prisoner in the bleak camp on Point Lookout, Md., although making efforts for discharge by taking the oath of allegiance. In this he at last suc ceeded, and is nowglad to remain among friends and kindred under the protec tion of the stars and stripes. He confirms reports of great demoral ization at Richmond, and says it is im possible for the people of the North to conceive the state of society there and throughout the South.—Daily, lWi. None but a physician knows how much a reliable alterative is needed by the people. On all sides of us, in all communities everywhere there are niul titudes that sutler*from complaints that nothing but an alterative curl's. Hence a great many of them have been made and put abroad with assurance of being ett'ectual. But they fail to accomplish the cures they promise because they have not the intrinsic virtues they claim. In this'state of the ease, I)r. J. C. Aver A Co., of Lowell, have supplied us with a compound Extract of Sarsaparilla, which does prove to be the long desired remedy. Its peculiar dilTerence from other kindred preparations in market is that it curat the diseases for which it is recommended, while they do not. We are assured of this fact by more than one of our intelligent Physicians in this neighborhood and have the further evi dence of our own experience of its truth. /'enneime Farmer. Lyon's Periodical Drops, the Great Female Remedy! Lyon's Periodical Drops cure all complaints incident to the sex, and remove all obstructions of nature from whatever cause, producing health, vigor and strength. I.yon's Periodical Drops arc better than all Pills, Powders and Nostrums being a fluid pre puralion, llieir action is direct and positive, and it needs nothing but good common sense to see and understand the reason why they cure all those ills to which the female system is subject ad, with dispatch and a degree of certainty which nothing but a scientifically compounded fluid preparation could reach they are, in the most obstinate cases, reliable, and sure to do good, and cannot, do barm to the most delicate constitutions. I.YON'S PKKIODICAL DROPS will certainly produce the regular return of nature, if taken a day or two before the expected period, and It is a maxim in the profession, that prevention is fcetter than cure. LYON'S PERIODICAL DROPS have been used by over twenly-five thousand ladles, within the past six months, and the testimony of all is, "It surely cures." CAUTION CA UTI IN Hear in mind that I guarantee my DROPS TO CUKK Suppression of the Menses, from whatev er cause, though care should be taken to ascer tain if pregnancy be the cause, as these DROPS would be sure to produce iniscarriuge, if taken wailst in that situation, and ull are cautioned a-Minst using them, as I wish It distinctly un derstood that I do not hold myself responsible wiien use.I under such circumstances. TO MARRIED LADIKS They are peculiarly adapted, as they bring the monthly period with sueu perfect regularity. I could furnish any quantity of testimonials of Its efficacy from my own patients, but the practice of parading bought and fictitious ones before the public is so prevalent, I do not deem It advisable. BE WISE IN TIME! Lift not disease destroy your constitution. Try» bottle of my Periodical Drops, and you will be satisfied that I am no impostor. Tell "your afflicted friend what restored the bloom of health to your cheeks, and thereby confer a favor more valuable than gold. For painful or scanty Menstruation it is Just the thing. I have now In my mind an instance of a lady who had been suffering frotn painful Men struation two or three years, coniining her to her room each time. She had applied to several eminent physicians without relief, when ONE BOTl'LE of my DROPS entirely cured her. ONE BOTTLE CURES In almost every case. It is impossible to enjoy the bloom of health and vivacity of spirits, unless the Menses are regular as to time, the quantity, and quality.— When they are obstructed, nature makes her efforts to obtain for it. some other outlet, anfl unless these efforts of nature are assisted, the itient usually experiences Despondency, Ner vousness, and finally, CONSUMPTION assumes its sway, and prematurely terminates a misera ble life. Do not suffer from these irregularities when an int'estmont of one dollar in Lyon's Periodi cal Drops will regulate and restore nature to its healthy course and NOT BE IMPOSED UPON by those wno havo other preparations which tlw»y desire to palm off upon the strength of the popularity of my Drops. But when the Druggist you apply to uas not got them, either make !iim buy them for you, or else enclose One Dollar to the nearest general wholesale agent, who will return you a bottle by return Express. See that the name of Jno. L. Lyon is written upon the directions which are wrapped around each bottle. None others are genuine. There fore, beware of counterfeits. They are for sale by every druggist in city and country, at one dollar ($i) per bottle. If you wish relief take no other. Dr. JNO. L. Every time a sick person is purged by this vegetable remedy, he has lets Titiated humors and more life and vigor, as any one can prove by taking a single do»e. Persons of spare habits gain flesh and strength while using them. Every time we rest a few days or weeks from the purgation, we make new fluids from our food, which replace the unsound ones that the pills have caused to be evacuated. Each time we repeat this process we expel further quantities of impurities, which are again re placed by fluids less and less impure, so that in a short time, by continuing this treatment, we bring back the whole masd of fluids or humors t' that state of purity which constitutes health, for Rrandretli's Pills only take away humors which are unsound.
