Both Secretary Fifh and Adniiral Palo

they receive tbe congratulations of

Tbe Democratic members of tbe
Congress of tbe United States held a
party caucus on Saturday night which
resulted in a strong indorsement by
the majority of tbe bsck pay measure
aad caused tbe withdrawal of Cox, of
New York Holman, of Indiana and
Neal, Sayler, Bouthord and Jewett, of
Ohio. Mr. Holman introduced a reso
lution condemning back pay and all
who took it, aud put forward Cox as
the antl-salary candidate tor Speaker.
Mr. JSIdridge denounced Holman as a
demagogue and applied bitter epitbeu
of a personal character. Mr. Holman
replied that El ridge was too much a
creature of the Board of Public Works
to lecture anybody present. For some
moments tbe row bid fair to become
general, but was quieted by tbe bolt
of tbe above named membera. Tbe
caaeus then proceeded to show its ap
preciation of Holman's motion by
nominating Fernando Wood for
Speaker. When tbe salary bill was
about to fail on its final passage Mr.
Wood rose and changed bis vote from
negative to
affirmative. There is great
dissatisfaction to day among tbe Dem

in which they found themselves as
fully Indorsing back psy when it was
fairly presented as an issue.
Tbe Forty-third Congress of tbe

whicb tbe Republican caucus Monday

The innuendoes and reflect ions in
the above article on Mr. McMillan are
manifestly so unjust that a few com
ments will not come amiss. As to the
first insinuation that Mr. McMillan
obtained Mi. Deyo's name to the
$1,000 for the purpose of swindling
him out of that amount—no one b»
lieves it who is acquainted with eithc
of them-.and as to the
second count.that
I)eyo had paid the *l.o00, that is also
far frotn the truth. The facts are that
the four thousand dollar claim has
been proved in bankruptcy against
Sharp &. McMillan, not as a secure
claim, but a direct claim against .S.
Mc. consequently Mr Devo could not
have paid it. And as this claim has
been prorcn in bankruptcy bv
holders whatever is paid on
claim from the assets of Shsrp & Mc
Millan, whether it be the full amount
of the claim or any part of it, a ilis
charge from bankruptcy will be
complete discharge of the full amount
of the debt. This amount has not
!een paid by Mr. Deyo, but the par
ties holding said claim hare seen fit
to take their chances for payment
from the assets of the bankrupts. Mr
Deyo did not allow the suit to come to
a trial, but withdrew it and paid his
costs and Mr.McMillan took his thou
sand dollars. Thus a fruitful subject
of conversation is disposed of.
Orange Feast at York Prairie—
Notes by One Who was there
YORK PBAIRIK.
OB.,
IOWA,
Nov. 28tb, 17:{
We have heard so much in regard
to grange* and grsngers. that we had
come to the concision that a grange
must te a very uninteresting place.
As we do not consider ourselves mem
bers of tbe great anti-secret society
therefore «e have no desire to know
tbe secret doing* of grange*, as long
the public part of this society is as
good and jovial as it was on tbe even
ing of tbe 26tb. At tbe place of meet
ing of the York Prairie Grange an
audience of some sixty or seventy
persons had i -ngreg»ted to par
ticipate in tbe f»-:ivitirs of a grange
feast. We accepted a kind invitation
and attended the same, and we must
iy that we were paid aud well |aid.
Language will fail to descrit** this
feast, for feast it was. It rlcbly de
serves such name. At the north
end of the front room of e sohooi
building tbe table wa constructed,
and most bountifully spread wilbgood
things, aud le«t of all the cry of
oysters! oysters! resounded through
tbe rooms. Pies, cakes and chickens
that were baudfd round and round
that table *peak volumes for tbe lady
grangers of York Prairie and adjoin
ing granges. The table was prepared
some four times, aud all seemed to te
satisfied, especially tbe st k dealer of
this vicinity. We are tempted to say
tbat if be takes as much imprest in
buying stick, he does in disposing
of oysters, tbat tbe graugers would do
well to sell their stock to bim. Tho
table beiug cleared away the worthy
Master announced tbat speaking was
in order. J. E. L. Carey being called
for, res|oijded by telling us wlia:
graugers pr posed to do, also thought,
that the*«e feasts would be productive
of good. A paper entitled "The
rauge Banner" was next read by
Kd. Wiliiaid Stanton. It was quite
interesting. Mr. Walters, of Virgin .a
Grove Grange, was next called for.
He entertained tbe audience for som«
fifteen minutes by relatiug some very
amusing anecdotes. An essay was
then read by William Blain, which
was good. Mr. Moseript made a few
remarks after wbicb the programme
for the next meeting was read. A
motion to .djourn was then carried,
all leaving seemingly well pleased
with the entertainment.
Have you visited the school? It"
not, take a day aud go and see for
oursc!f how your children are beiug
cared for and educated, and our word
for it, you wdl learn something your
sell" aud Ite well pleased with what
you see and hear: and besides hat
you will see the best conducted
schools in thf county. We were sur
prised to learn that there are in at
tendance about 40 scholars in Mr
Stubbs' room who reside outside of
the district a larger number of pupils
han most untry school* have.
Gen. CUrfleld is very much opposed
to the bankruptcy act. He think
Congress will repast it, or at least the
involuntary ffstwre* of tbe law. He
says:
Tbe operation of tbe iovolotary
clause which enables a creditor to
throw a debtor iuto bankruptcy wbo
does not meet his obligations promptly
without regard to his reai solvency, in
often ui just and injurious in ordinary
times, but in a monetary crisis it i*
particularly so. Men with unincum
bered property to the amount of hun
dreds of thousands of dollar* are often
meiibced with bankruptcy court and
actually forced into it, because they
cannot raise a few thousand dollars of
currency to meet thsir immedi ate lis
bilities. A single hoatilecreditor may
ruin a long established and perfectly
solvent firm
