We Cannot Buy Scouting
We believe scouting does more
good for more boys in the United
States than does' any other or
ganization.
In the molding of young men.
this program provides a directed
pattern of character building, su
pervised recreation and whole
some purposes. It teaches more
than doing a good turn daily
or learning how to set up a prac
tical overnight camp.
Within the next few weeks this
immediate area is being asked to
donate what may be a sum in ex
cess of $1,000 for scouting. This
money is not for the support of
local troops, and not one penny
stays here as contrasted to most
fund drives, nor are local troops
particularly helped.
This area sees more of its paid
scout executives at fund raising
time than it does during the other
111/2 months.
Our thought is that the sue
cess of a scout troop is much more
the result of a good man. namely
the scoutmaster, who receives no
pay, and is able to spend near
endless time with boys. It is
further the interest of our neigh
bors, men of the troop committee,
who for example will help the
scoutmaster transport boys to
weekend camps. Too often it's the
scoutmaster's car hauling two and
three loads, and he always pays
for the gas, buys the extra grub
and finds an extra blanket.
We should support the fund
drive for scouts realizing that
there must be a national organiz
ation, but they do not merit $1,000
from the Hungry Horse area with
its new businesses and just be

it was dead. Anything can hap
