M kno w ONTANA .. CHRISTMAS PARTY BACK IN 1850 In the year 1850 a joyous party assembled on Christmas eve ning in a recently constructed adobe building at the trading post of the American Fur Company on the upper Missouri River and known as Fort Lewis. In the gathering there was a two-fold object; To celebrate the event of Christmas by suitable rejoicing and to dedicate to ultimate uses the first adobe building erected in that section of what later was to become Montana. Major Culbertson was commander of the fort. He was joined in the celebration by 60 to 70 subordinates at the post along with women and children. A majority of the men at the post were Canadian and Louisiana French of the class called voyageur. To know the nationality of the group is to know that on this occasion merriment and jollity reigned. The climax of the celebration was the renaming of the post, then in process of construction in adobe, as Fort Benton, honoring a valued employe of the American Fur Company.
