He says : "From the same vat of spirits can be produced whisky of any age, rum from Jamaica or any other place on the globe, brandy from the most celebrated districts of France, and the most approved after-dinner cordials, and gin that would deceive the most, educated tastes, can all bejproduced from a few jars of coloring matter, and vials of drugs, upon the labels of some of which appear the skull and cross bones as a warning to the user." A deal of the stuff that is sold for the finest liquors is made by the rumseller himself, of drills and poisonous compounds. A liquor dealer in a city within the commonwealth of Massachusetts was asked one day if he could fur nish a barrel of whisky. "Not now' he replied, but call again three or four hours hence, and I shall be able to accommodate you." Alcohol is a poi son, but oftentimes that which is sold contains very little alcohol, but poisons which do their work more quickly.
