A new paper named Cuba Lbre has just been started in New York. Its purpose is to give authentic in formation of the war in Cuba. The Cubans are jubilant. Ex. The sugar planters of Louisiana are howling for their bounty. We hava never been able to see the justice of the sugar bounty. Any other industry has an equal claim to it. Advices received at the agricul tural department announce that the manufactory at Anniston, Ala., has secured the contract for equip ping the city of Tokio, Japan, with water pipes. The king of Portugal has a crown worth $8,000 000. That sum would build a pretty fair rail road, and Portugal needs railroads much more than she needs crowns and kings. Archibald Coleman and Chas. H Taylor started recently from Washington for a tramp around the world. They wagered $500 that they can make the trip with out funds, earning their way as they proceed, in fourteen months. An election was held in Key West the other day to bond the county in the sum of $500,000 for the purpose of building a roadway from that city to Key Largo. Great interest was manifested in the election and out of 700 votes polled, only one or two were against bonding Tampa Tribune. A LONG BRIDGE. A gigantic undertaking, the bridging over of Polk's Strait, sep arating the island of Ceylon from the mainland of India, is seriously proposed by the Ceylon govern ment. The strait is 41 miles wide at its narrowest point, double the width of the English Channel, but is very shallow, in many places only six feet deep. The islands, reefs and channels in it have recently been surveyed, and the cost of works, extending over 61 miles, is estimated at 28,000,000 rupees. The ends will be connected by 145 miles of railroad with Colombo, the harbor of Ceylon, and by 90 miles with the Indian railroad sys tem. If narrow gauge is used, this can be done for $11,000,000 rupees more. A rupee is worth about half of an American silver dollar. We should think that if Ceylon can build a railroad over an arm of the ocean 4 1 miles wide, Florida can build a railroad over the chain of islands that connect Key West with the mainland.
