One of the most illegal proposi
tions that his ever been advanced
is the one that free silver will be
good for the farmer but not for the
salaried man or day laborer. It
must have taken an inventive gen
ius to have thought cf that idea.
The man who does not know that
that which is good for the firmer
cannot be other than good for
every man in the land is ignorant
of a generally known fact. It
must be a dull man who does not
know that when everything is
brought down to its lowest level
that salaries and day laboreis
wages will be brought down on the
sameleveL The daily wages in
some of the European countries
is today as low as 10 cents to 25
cents in silver or gold. If tho day
laborers have not had sufficient ex
perience in this country let them
elect McKinley and they will get
their fill before his time expires,

The baggage-smasher's ghoulish
face was illumed with a smile of
glee, for his car was filled with
stuff edup trunks till it was a sight
to see. As the train sped on
through the summer's morn' and
the car rocked to and fro, said he
to himself: ''What a cinch I'll
have when these trunks get on the
go-
"That big one there I'll give a
shove that will send it straight to
smash, and that smaller one on the
other side I'll 'bust' like a light
ning's flash."

wrecks he'd make when he reach
ed the other end
Then, with whistle's shrieked
and the brakes down hard, in a
vain attempt to s'ack his awful
sneed, the engineer saw a'bou der

piled up and telescoped by the
force of that awful chock.
The biggage-car wns a total
wreck, with the trunk3 split open
wide, and their contents dotted the
landscape o'er and were scattered
cn every side.

from the wreck, and a sorry sight
was he, with his ribs pushed in and
a broaken arm; bu withal that
smile of glee hung o'er his features
as he viewd the "used-up" bag
gage there, and it seemed as if for
his battered form he had never a
thought of care.

mighty - man this smasher of
trunks so grim when he saw at a
glance that the railway wreck had
completed a job for him.

Britain deducti 10 per cent for al
loy when they rcceire American
gold coin for government debts.
Answer Great Britain does
not recognize our gold coin as
money. It is a commodity, and is
taken precisely at a barrel of pork
or caddy of tobacco by weight.
Alloy is of course deducted. We
receive foreign gold coins simply
as a commodity, and not a legal
tender for any sura. In short, as
between nations there is no such
thing as money. All trade con
sists of barter an exchange of
commodities. By a law of con
gress in 1843 British gold coins
were made a legal tender at the
rate of 94.6 cents per penny
weight. French gold coins 9 10
fine were made a legal tender for
all debts at the rate of 92.9 cents
per pennyweight. By the same
act the silver dollars of Mexico,
Peru and Bolivia wers made a legal
tender for 93 cents.
By the act of Congress of 1S57
all foreign coins were entirely dis
franchised and were sent to an
American, mint to be converted
into American coin. This lav has
nvcr been repealed, and is in force
now.
British gold will not pay a debt
until it has passod through sn
American mint. It is an interest
ing fact that the United States will
not receive its own gold coin ex
