DOES EDUCATION PAY
4
Pri26 Essay Read in the Contest at
the Armory in Ocala March 8
1902 by Miss L E Reed Student
in the Tenth Grade of the McIn
tosh School
I
Education as defined by the Stand
ard Dictionary Is 1 The process
or result of educating acquirement
by any course of discipline and in
structlpn the systematic develop
ment and cultivation of the mind and
other natural powers and the direc
tion of the feelings taste and the
manners by Inculcation and impres
sion 2 Training resulting from
the pursuit of a complete course in
an institute of learning or a special
course as In law medicine art me
chanics or the like
The very existence of our nature
depends upon education Greatness
depends upon r education and will
continue to depend upon It The
United States stands with the educa
ted nations of the world and many
foreigners are coming to this country
h
to be educated
See what education has done for
Japan and ask yourself does educa
tion pay Why most assuredly it
does Education has long been in ex
istence The ancient nations as the
Romans and Greeks spent much
time in the pursuit of an education
which led to their greatness
The educated individual has much
effect upon the progress of the na
tion Think of what Edison has done
for his country His education in the
science of electricity does not only
gain notoriety for himself but also for
the United States All professions
require an education Perhaps you
will sayV that agriculture does not
but it does The agricultural depart
ment in Washington educates itself
in the art of agriculture and sends
its agricultural reports to all points
of the United States for those con
cerned to be educated
Take the boy with a college educa
tion It has broadened his mind and
enables him to enjoy the pleasures of
nature to use the learning of past
ages instead of learning all by exper
ience It is far better to have one
year of culture knowledge and love
than four score years and ten sur
rounded by ignorance through which
the bright rays of intelligence cannot
penetrate The college intensifies the
individuality of man
President Jordan says Jt takee
his best abilities and raises them to
the second or third or tenth power
as we say in algebra Education en
ables him to use better machinery
and earn more money
One of the Important facts con
cerning the last century was the ex
tension of the benefits of education
to the masses of the people It shows
that education increases the wealth
producing power of a nation in direct
prppprtlpn to its distribution and
thoroughness The statistics as are
shown In an article from Chares W
Dabney in the Worlds Work are
thus
thusThe
T The proportion letween the school
period in Massachusetts the school
period in the whole United States
and the school period in Tennessee
is expressed by the figures 14 8 8 6
The proportion of the productive ca
PScity pf each person in Massachu
setts in the Whqjg United States and
in Tennessee Is expressed by the fig
ures 13 85 58 This is not a mere
coincidence in the case of Massachu
setts the United States and in Ten
nessee It Is fl Jaw all over the world
The productivity gf a pogpje is every
where proportional to thelr education
But the increase of money is the least
and lowest of the rich rewards of a
mental culture The whole being is
enlarged and exalted the scope of
view is widened the subjects of
thought are multiplied life is more
filled with emotion and man is rais
ed in the scale of creation
When we cqmplete our course in a
college university or Pther Institute
of learning our education is not com
plete we are only prepared for lifes I
great education which we alone only
can acquire Many sustain the idea
that to obtain a sufficient education
to enable a man to appear advantage
ously upon the theater especially of
public life his boyhood and youth
must be spent within the walls of
some classical seminary of learning
that he may commence his career un
der the high floating banner of a col
legiate diploma With them it is the
first round on the ladder of fame
That a refined classical education is
desirable and one qf the accomplish
ments of a man I admit that ty is
indispensably necessary and it alone
makes a man more useful I deny
He who has been incarcerated from
his childhood up to his majority with
in the limited circumference of his
school and boarding room although
lie may have mastered all the clas
sics Is destitute of knowledge of men
and things indispensably necessary
to prepare him for action
We can become great and useful
men and women without a college ed

Va I consulted a doctor and he said I had

ent kinds of patent medicines but they only
helped me a little I then sent and got five

ucation Franklin and Lincoln were
both great men who never had the
advantage of a college education
Theodore Parker says there will al
ways be men whom nothing can keep
uneducated Men that go forth
strong as the sun and as lonely Shut
out from books and teachers they
have instructions in the birds and
beasts and whole Vatican libraries
in the trees and stones But no one
knows how much greater these men
might have been could they have had
the advantage of a college education
Theodore Parker as well as oth rs
could see that these men were edu
cated They educated themselves by
experience and application It pays
to be self educated And we who
have not the advantage of a college
education can with ambition and per
severance become educated and
make ourselves leaders instead of be
ing led by the knowledge of some
one else And by this self education
one can raise himself above the line
of common men <
