MARION SUPERIOR COURT
Opened This MorningVariOus Good
Citizens Sought to be Excused But
Their Services Were Too Valuable
to Their Country
Circuit court convened this morn
ing with Judge W S Bullock on the
bench The jurors were called and
District Attorney Neal M Allred ex
plained who were qualified were
also who under the law were excused
from jury duty I
C B Miller foreman of the South
ern Phosphate company desired to be I
excused because he was the only man
to oversee the work of the company
but Judge Bullock evidently thought
the rock would keep and asked Charles
to rock along with the bunch
Mr NorsworLhy the excellent farm
er and successful trucker and orange
grower of the McIntosh section plead
I
to be let off so that he could see to
1
shipping his orange crop The judge
evidently thought the cold snap was
over and that Mr N would have plen
ty of time to serve his country and
himself intimating that his presence
could not be dispensed with
A A Yongue of Fairfield plead poor I
hearing and the judge excused him I
The Messrs Chappell of Kendrick I
got belated because their trusty time
pieces went back on them but as the I
warrant for their nonarrival as ju
rors had not been issued the judge
I
did not curry them and they were
sworn in I

The docket was then called and the I
jurors dismissed until 2 oclock I
The judge remarked that there were
several cases on the docket in which I
he was disqualified and that he had
written the governor to send a judge I
here at the end of this court and try II
them He had not jet heard in reply I
This week only civil cases will be
tried next week criminal cases
II
Major Izlar made some pertinent re
marks about attorneys preparing for
the trial of cases and thereby expedit i
ing the court proceedings He said I
that in South Carolina a number of at
torneys most deeply interested in the I
trial of cases would assemble a week
ahead of court and determine on cer
tain action which would keep the
court grinding and when court was
I called the court acquiesced and there I
were no delays or halting
I
Judge Bullock was very desirous to
I expedite the work of the court and
I said he would do as he did at Brooks
vine convene court at 630 a m and I

hold until 11 oclock at night This
I
seemed to jar some of the attorneys I
who evidently love to warm their pil

What the Lively Young Candidate in
the First Ward Thinks of
City Politics
Ocala Fla Nov 18 1903
Dear Friends As I am a candidate
for councilman from our ward it is
due you that reasons be given you for
supporting me
City scrip is hard to sell at 90c I
promise to listen to any feasible plan
to make it as good as if it had Uncle
Sams own stamp on it
Equality before the law for all
Mr Jewell was fined 3 for selling
15 cents worth of fruit on Sunday
I while some of our leading merchants
sell hundreds of dollars of goods fifty
two Sundays in the year Why have
they not been fined Was the city ordinance
I
dinance made for the rich and not for
the poor
I have information on good author
ity that the city paid more than 1700
for work that one of our nonpolitical
citizens offered to do for 450
Is there any difference between Phil
adelphias graft and Ocalas graft
The sorelegged northern tramps infest
our streets at the first approach of
winter Are you glad to see them
I Has the city council done aught to
stop this nuisance Make the tramps
go around Ocala
Our state courts have decided that
interest cannot be collected on city
scrip Why does Ocala pay it
Citizens of the first ward drain Tay
lors pond and keep out of the ceme
tery
If we are to depend on the moon for
0
street lights why have electric and arc
lights They are seldom lit
I am opposed to the city impounder
attempting to drive cattle away from
those who are herding them I believe
in regulating the cow but deem it bad
I executive work to impound country
cattle that wander into the city for
water Why not turn their heads
home instead of to the pound Their
owners are ouc friends and customers
Treat them with fairness and equality
I Is our cjty water good It should
be the best
I
You say I am young Time will rem
edy that Friends if elected I prom
ise to represent you and the first ward
I stick to my friends and my friends
I
are those who stick to me

111 writes II My wife had a severe attack of
pleurisy and lung trouble the doctors gave her
up to die She commenced taking Dr Pierces
Golden Medical Discovery and she began to
improve from the first dose By the time she
had taken eight or ten bottles she was cured
and it was the cause of a large amount being
