It was the first marriage service
ever performed at St Johns church at
t
It seemed to warm everyones heart
to know that the dear old grandmoth
er with her four score years and more
had the happiness to witness the mar
riage ceremony of the last of her
grandchildren and one to whom she is
dearly and tenderly attached
Hon II V Long was greatly sur
prised some six weeks ago to receive
a note from the intended bride re
questing him to perform the marriage
ceremony saying she had learned to
love him as her Sunday school super
intendent the only one she ever had
and none other could tie the hymeneal
knot but the sage of Martel and the
Adviser and friend of every man wo
man and child in that broad stretch
of country To oblige the captivating
miss Mr Long had to be specially
commissioned by the governor to per

form the act
And this reminds the reporter to say
that Mr Long has the record in his
long years of public usefulness as jus
tice of the peace and notary to marry
more couples than any rural officer in
the state of Florida if not in any of
the largest town of the state His re

cord is 150 couples in four years This i
is not of recent date however but in I
the dark and gloomy days of recon
struction when there was no parson
or justice nearer than Ocala nor a
preacher in all that section west of
the St Johns river and on some Sun
day mornings the chancel of St Johns
church would literally glitter with the
expectancy of the Aryan race for mat
rimonial honors or glow with the
sheen of the Senegambian for matri
monial felicities
That Mr Longs usefulness in his
community is appreciated is shown by
the fact that St Johns Sunday school
never had but one superintendent and
the only time Mr Long did not honor
that exalted And inspiring position
was when he served gallantly in the
late civil war or when his fellow coun
trymen by their partiality placed him
for four years as Marions county
clerk Truly this is a record worthy
of mention and is the morecommend
able for the fidr and singleness of
purpose with v Yd ir > filled it
