lACK OF lOCOMOTIVES
A Scarcity of Engines is the Real
Reason Why Freight is So
Direfully Delayed
Tampa Times 6th
The question of handling freight now
presents the problem that is becoming
serious both to shippers and to trans
postatlon men Many shippers are loud
in their complaints about the failure
of the railroads to handle freight of
fered to them
In discussing this question a few
days ago a large shipper stated that
it was not a question of shortage of
cars with the railroads but a shortage
of locomotives to handle the cars He
said that the Florida railroads had
plenty of cars to handle their freight i
I I
business with but that they would not
place these cars to be loaded because
they could not move them hence would
not lay themselves liable by allowing
j cars to be loaded when they could not
move them to market
The gentleman said that a short
while ago he had two thousand bar
rels of rosin and the price went up to
I
750 a barrel and he desired very
much to ship his holdings and sell it
The railroads would not furnish him I
with cars because they did not have
the locomotive power to move the
cars He lost heavily by his failure
to get his product to market The price
went down and then back to S7 again
but he was still unable to get his
product to market
He declared that he knew these con
ditions to exist because he had care
fully investigated the matter and had
learned the facts While the losses
fall heavily upon the shippers who are
thus held up yet from this explana
tion it would seem that the railroads
are not really to blame They are se
curing additional motive power as fast
Ias the factories can turn It out and
beyond this they can do nothing to re
lieve the present situation The roads
themselves are losing heavily by this
situation because they lose the freight
revenues they would otherwise get if
they were able to handle the goods
So It would seem that the railroads
have troubles of their own as well
as the common herd
