the party gazed horrified at the spot

groes Caused a Pitched Battle

Chicago IlL Jan Two men were
killed one policeman wounded and
several workingmen injured is the re
sult of a pitched battle which occurred
last night between three policemen and I
thirty Hungarian laborers at Gary In
diana Though outnumbered ten to
one the brave policemen stood their
ground until reinforcements arrived I
The cause which led to the difficul
ty is the same old nice problem The
Hungarians were employed on the
tracks of the South Bend railroad and
several of their number destroyed the
quarters of a negro employe and when I
the latter sought to retaliate he was 1
fired upon by the Hungarians The po
lice then interfered with the above re
sult
