DEBATE AT BU1ELLON
The Ho j lftpbert < McNamee of Tampa
Surprised the People of Dunnellon
With His Eloquence and Made a
Toy of the Argument Presented by
the Dry Advocate
Editor StarThe joint debate on the
reat question of prohibition between
John S Beard of Pensacola and the
Hon Robert McNamee of Tampa
which was held at Dunnellon Thursday
night resulted in a complete walk
over for Mr McNamee who represent
ed the wet cause
Eight or ten children opened the
services by singing after which a
prayer was offered A short talk fol
lowed by W D Cam in which he de
clared that not one cent of the rev
enue paid by the saloonkeeper went to
the county school fund or to the gen
eral improvements of the county in any
shape or form but he declined to ex
plain what these funds were used for
They certainly go to defray some nec
essary expense of the state or county
which must inevitably be made good
by heavier taxation providing the
county is voted dry
Mr Beard then followed with the
same argument and speech which he
delivered in Ocala on Wednesday
night and which he sems to have
learned by heart Mrs E Van Hood
then made a short talk on the slave
question which was only an attempt
to capture the colored vote but the
audience did not become enthusiastic
until Hon Robert McNamee came
forth to address them in favor of re
taining the present license system In
I
an intelligent manner he proceeded to
answer the argument presented by the
dry advocates in a way that would
shed forth glory upon the greatest
orators of our great country ike so
riddled and disproved the assertions of
his opponent that he flatly refused to
meet Mr McNamee in joint debate
at McIntosh last night and gave as
his reasons that he was not prepared
for joint debates A poor excuse is
better than none but it is the opinion
of the general public that none would
have been better in this case
Mr Beard attempted to reply to Mr
McNamee in a rejoinder bu the au
dience dispersed and left as his hear
ers only those who accompanied him
from Ocala It was a great victory
for the wet cause 14
