NARROW ESCAPE FROM
MARRYING A NEGRO
Unpleasant Experience of a White Girl
I in Washington City
Washington April 21 Represen t
ing himself to be a white man a negro
three years ago enlisted in the United
States Army Hospital Corps Meeting
a young white girl he won her affec
tions Following an estrangement be
tween the white girl and the mulatto
the negro and his black wife who did
not appear in the case t until a few
days ago attempted to blackmail the
White girl by threatening to ruin her
among her friends Such is the story
brought out by the girls appeal to the
Washington police who because the
case was settled out of court refuse
to divulge the names of the principals
The young woman who spretty
and about 24 years old called at one
of the precinct stations last night and
appealed to the officer in charge tp
protect her from the blacks She told
her story as follows
I met this man about a year agoI
before his enlistment in the Hospital
Corps was out He was then a non
commissioned officer He asked per
iiission to call on me and after talk
ing to him for a while he told me that
he belongs to a good family in the
southwestern part of the country and
hinted that he had left his home when
quite a boy His story iwasvery
plausible After he had called upon
me Several times we became attached
to each other and he gave me his pho
I
Z graph Then came a quarrel and I
did not see him for some time
Imagine my distress when yester
day a coalblack negress appeared at
m house and calling for me demand
eel that I relinquish her husband
photograph I denied knowing any
thing about her husband until she told
me his name and then the whole ter
rible truth dawned upon me
I was powerless to comply with the
request for when I went to search
tor the picture I could not find it She
then threatened to go to my friends
and expose the fact that I had nearly
married a negroand a negro with a
black wife at that
The police official had no authority
to arrest the man but he sent for him
When the negro arrived he was put
through a course of sprouts He looked
lke a white man and would probably
deceive the casual observer The po
lice official plainly said to him that I
in enlisting in the Hospital Corps as
a white man he had committed per
jury and that unless he ceased his
persecution of the young white woman
he woul < be arrested
If I ever hear of you so much as I
Voking at the girl again said the po
lice officer who is from Virginia Ill
send you to the penitentiary and do
my best to get your wife a jail sen
tence
And so another of the many striking
cases which rarely see the light of day I
was settled out of court

need only to refer to Mr Alvin H
Stimpson of Willimantic Conn who

on account of the failure of so many
remedies finally tried Foleys Kidney
Cure which he says was just the
