FROM PROFESSOR MCALL
aysFirst ReportB2of Fire at Howard
Academy Were Exaggerate
In writing this article I have in
ind only the public concern as I
ink the public Is due a calm and
llected stateme t in respect to the
threatened disaster from the fall of a i
mp at the recent closing exercises of
oward Academy j
I
I disclaim at the outset any desire or
tention of entering into a contro
brsy with the writer of an unsigned
tide appearing in the Ocala press
bout the 15th list On the contrary
wish to approve as I also appreciate
he substance of the article as based
ipon facts only in some instances
erdrawn For instance all the men
were not cowards by any means for
While some were triyng to calm the
frightened crowd others were endeav
oring to extinguish the flames and
ethers still were providing means of
escape should it become necessary
Moreover if credits were tO be giver
to some they might have been mor
equitably distributed especially upon
deserving women of whom there were
come for all were not excited and I
some worked as heroically as the
bravest of the men Some even sug
I gesting I and assisting in the very de
I vices and means used to smother the
flames But these brave men and wo
men are modest and will enter no de
fense of their conduct nor is it the
rurpose of this article to defend them
Indeed they need no defense npr do
they expect praise for doing their
plain duty x
Again the casualties were not so
rrany and serious as intimated For
instance the doctors have not discov
ered the broken limbs and internal
bruises There were however some
bruises and at least one swoon just as
ould be expected even for less cause
1 do not however underestimate the
seriousness of what might have been
But it is not to be expected that a
correspondent only a few hours re
moved from the scene of incident
when udder excitement rumors wer
flying thick and thin and nothing
I
could be verified could give a correct
and conservative version of the affair
henceforth this statement under more
normal conditions J D McCall
