dent Roosevelt yesterday Informed the
seriate ihno uncertain terms that he
had given his approval to the absorp
tion of the Tennessee Coal and Iron
Company by the United States Steel
corporation and that he had instruct
ed Attorney General Bonaparte not to
respond to the senate inquiry as to
the reasons for his failure to pros
ecute the steel company
The presidentconcludes his mes i
sage with the statement that he does
not conceive it to be within the au
thority of the senate to give direc
tions of this character to the head or
an executive department
The message to the senate is in re
sponse to a resolution Introduced by
Senator Culberson calling on the At
torney General to state whether he i
had brought an action against the i
steel company because of its acquisi I
tion of the Tennessee concern and
not the reason for nonaction

Mr McMullen stated yesterday that
While he will not frame this bill he
Is certain that It will be Introduced
and he has no doubt but that it will
carry It will require twothirds
vote to passsuchJ a measure but
from the line uiv which it is < alleged
has been formed there is little doubt
but that the required majority will be
secured Mr McMullen says he will
lend his effort on the floor to the pas
sage 91 the bill and will also aid in
bringing about state wide prohibition
