A PARDON FOR CAMPBEll
The Murderer of Mamie Joseph Finds
Him an Inmate of the State
Insane Asylum
St Augustine Jan 9A telegram
received in this city conveys news of
a pardon for Alexander Campbell who
eighteen years ago shot and killed
Miss Mamie Joseph
This pardon It is understood was
one of the last official acts of Gover
ned Broward before his retirement
The details of the murder are remem
bered by many residents of this city
having at the time stirred the com
munity as it had never been moved
before I nor since Alexander Camp
bell was then a brilliant promising
young man His terrible deed was
attributed to Insane jealousy He
wa convicted and sentenced to life
imprisonment
Of rather frail physique it was
thought that Campbell would be un
able to stand the hardships of a con
vict camp but his ability as an ex
pert accountant removed him soon
from the phosphate mines and plac
ed him in a clerical position which
no doubt prolonged his life About
a year ago he was removed to the
state asylum for the insane a phys
ical and mental wreck The pardon
may not benefit him much as he is
reported to be In a pitiful condition
t
Campbell was for some time at the
Marion Farms near this city and was
well known by several Ocala people
He was a model prisoner and there Is
no doubt that his life was passed in
repentance and remorse for his fearful
crime
THE CRUSADE
AGAINST CONSUMPTION
A NinetyDay Campaign Has Been
Opened in Florida Against the
Great White Plague
Jacksonville Jan Eastward and
southward swings the consumption
combat From Alabama to Florida
moves the exhibition campaign of the
national association for the study and
prevention of aberculosis Even in 1
Florida where nature has done so
much to further healthful living man I
has been careless and unwise and ig
norant In the care of his body so that
the garden has been made ready In
the humun soil for the harvests of
needless disease
with January first there opened at
Jacksonville a ninetyday campaign
which is expected to stir every city
town and neighborhood between the
Gulf find the Atlantic The state
superintendent will declare a health
day In all of the schools The State
Board of Health will cooperate direct
ly and through health officials over
the state The womens clubs are es
I pecially committed to the campaign
through their health department Re
Hgious civic commercial educational
and patriotic bodies will take part sos
that with the aid of the press of they
state it Is expected that few residents
or visitors will fail to receive the
message of better health for all of
the people Negro leaders in line I
with the program planned at Tuske
gee in December will push the move
ment among their race
The national association has pro I
vided for holding exhibits at Jackson
ville Tampa and Pensaclla There
will also be one day Institutes at sev
eral of the larger towns together with
meetings In practically every com
munity In the state Because of the I
splendid health conditions in Florida
a little intelligent effort plus a com
prehensive educational campaign will
I
go far towards freeing the state alto
gether from tuberculosis
