While In Jacksonville last week
with our botter haIr we called at
thi Old Ladles Homo for Information
about that retreat and the possibility
of securing a home for a helpless old
lady We found Miss Martha Owens
a former resident of Sparr and
daughter of the late Dr James B
Owens In charge who when we pre
sented ourselves made It cry pleas
ant for us She gave us all the Infor
mation possible about the Home and
Its Inmates and the beneficlent work
it was doing for those who were ad
vanced in life and had no home ol
their own or a place they could call
The home is a creation or a body OI
noble and helpful band of women of I
the city of Jacksonville who knowing
the crying need of Just such an insti
tution began work for the same and
by their untiring efforts and zeal for
the needy and suffering and those
who had seen better days and in their
declining years were looking for just
such a place provided the same
Though their beginning was small
the Institution has so impressed It
self on the hearts of the people of
through the efforts of those in charge
that they have enlisted a membership
t whoso contributions have secured a
large three story brick building in
Springfield furnished and maintain
ed it and today it is filled to its fullest
capacity for those who need its ser
vices most
The home Is all its narne denotes
yet Is not entirely frie vtqthose who
ask for Its shelter nsrOldlady who
can raise 1200 ofc ufcpWd through
her friends can have 4 Ho ne for life
under its benignant ropf or by pay
ment of 510 a month have the same
privileges The rooms are comfort
ably furnished and each inmate has
a room to herself The menu is ex
cellent and In pejng presented to the
various Inmates as Mrs Owens
showed Us around we never heard
such a unanimity of expression from
those whom she sheltered as to the
pleasure and satisfaction It gave them
to testify to the perfect conditions
that prevailed there Miss Owens has
certainly been asister to the Inmates
and they perfectly worship her for the
zeal interest and attei tlon she gives
them and the kind and considerate
treatment she accords all The art of
housekeeping Is almost perfect
Cleanliness and sightliness Is every
where in evidence and to the well fur
nishedrooms many valuable and dear
mementoes and keepsake from he
former homes of the Inmates have
been added to lend brightness and
cheer to those whO occupy them
Those of the Inmates who are ablo
physically assist In sitting the dining
room table clear the same after each
meal also kec 0 the room neat and
clean and do if with great cheerful
ness as It is a relief from the inevit
able monotony that must come to
hem as they do what little they can
In their rooms
The home shelters two eld ladles
from Marion namely Mrs Stewart
formerly of Oaklawn and mother 01
the late Hon George W Wilson and
Mrs Moore thb widow of the late
Prof J H Moore of Cltra who are
delighted with their surroundings and
S with all the rest of the inmates say
the home to them is a paradise
While wo thr heard of the home
we knew little of It and did not real
ize the full importance of Its meaning
to thoso whoso conditions n life
needed Just such HJO ideal place Nor
arc we unmindful JC Ihe services of
that noble band of consecrated wo
S men who appreciating their own
homo comforts and the I ving hearts
that minister to it and make it the
dearest place on earth to them that
these in their comfort have not for
gotten their less fortunate sisters in
the generosity and kindness of their
hearts and hayo made this splendid
provision for them All is a labor of
love with them but their reward Is
the heart Celt prayers and benedictions
of the inmates whose gratitude and
appreciation for what has been done
for thorn raise an incense to the al
ters of a common humanity and sis
Besides the servants there is one
trained nurag who looks after the
feeble and helpless inmates Of the
latter class there is one The appli
cations are numerous for admission
into tho home but for the present
there are no vacancies but as fast as
they occur applicants are admitted
per date of the application
We tender our thanks to the lovely
superintendent Miss Martha Owens
who made our stay so pleasant In
structive and inspiring
Representative L S Light of Mar
ion county true to his predeliction
and election promises was one of the
members of the lower house demand
Ing a limitation of committee clerks
He thought 113 clerks for 100 mem
bers too numerous especially when
one of those clerks only enrolled one
bill during the whole session but got
1250 for that burdensome task But
with all the protests the house refus
ed to consider the question on the
ground that the speaker had not yet
appointed the chairmen of the various
Charley Weaver who was in An
thony yesterday called on Walter El

Walter has the finest 200 acres of
cantaloupes he had ever seen The
vines arc a thing of beauty while on
them arb thousands of cantaloupes as

breaking crop and we trust he will
get fair prices for them If he does
he will be on easy street for the next

Good Friday was observed today by
the Catholic and Episcopal churches

services and by a great many mem

church The day commemorates the
death of our Lord Jesus Christ thru
which good has come to us peace in
the life that now Is and felicity In the
life to come It is called Good Friday
because of the great good which God
accomplished for mankind by giving
His only begotten Son to die on that
day for our sins and because of the
Saviors goodness In giving himself a
ransom for our souls His death and
passion ought to be the means of i
