That brand of canned tomatoes
said a grocer to a customer T can t
recommend for Ive sold them for I
years What so interests you In that I
brand 1 Youre always trying to sell
them to me when yon know I prefer I
another kind Do you make more ou
them iSo i
themNo
No There Is a very different ex
planation Come in here and Ill tell
you
youAnd leading the way to his private
office he told the following story I
One day some years ago a young
woman came in here to buy some
canned goods I waited on her myself I
These tomatoes were new in the mar
ket then and I had been offered in
ducements to push them The girl
didnt appear to know what she want
ed and was a bit flustered but there
seemed to be something about the
label on the tomatoes that attracted
her attention It covered the can from
top to bottom and on it was a colored
picture of several ripe in
deed the same label that Is used to
day I sold her a can and a can of
peas both of which she seemed to
select under the influence of the labels
She took them away with her I
The next day she brought them
back telling me that she wished me to
ship them with some other articles
she intended to purchase She then
selected a lot of canned goods mar
malade peaches Jelly and the like
directing me to pack all in one box
They were to be sent to her Invalid
brother In care of a certain person al
a town near the center of the state
She paid all charges and left me to
ship the box when liked
I took an especial interest in the
girl from the first She was so pret
ty so sad and before she went away
gave me an appealing look which 1 in
terpreted to mean that she wanted me
to be sure that her brother received
the delicacies in good order I super
Intended the packing myself and no
tieing that the can of peas Indicated
fermentation I put it aside and got
another The rest of the goods seemed
to be all right and I shipped them
1 left the can of peas in the pack
ing room till the next day when I took
it up to put it away It bad stood al1
I night near a sink and some one had
spilled some water over it I felt the
label slip away and noticed that some
thing had been wrapped tightly under
it Setting It down on a shelf I saw
that a lot of small thin saws had been
soldered around the can
You may imagine my astonishment
My first impulse was to call some one
to see my find but suddenly realizing
that the position in which I was placed
required thought before action I tool
the can up to the top floor where J
could examine it alone The saws
were highly tempered and would cui
right through iron Upon reflection 1
surmised that the girl bad taken this
and the can of tomatoes home with I
her that the files might be fixed be I
neath the labels The tomatoes had
been shipped and would doubtless go
to some prisoner who would use the
saws about them to cut himself out
The girl had surreptitiously used our
firm believing that any goods coming
from us would not be suspected
Here was a situation Suppose the
saws were discovered by the authori
ties I had a fine prospect of taking
the place of the prisoner I resolved
to telegraph at once to the prison offi
cials a warning that would protect
mo from intentional complicity I hid
the can with the saws still on it and
going to the office was writing the
telegram when feeling that some one
was looking over my shoulder I turned
and saw the girl who had trapped me
I had written enough of the telegram
for her to see that her game was up
There was no one else in the office
I stepped to the door closed and
locked It For an hour I listened to a
story with infinite complications which
portrayed the landing of an innocent
young man the girls brother in Jail
for a crime of embezzlement into
which he had been trapped by the real
criminals
The girl overanxious as to the ship
ment of the goods had called ostensi I
bly for the purchase of some articles I
for herself but really to ask If the box
had been sent Seeing me in the office I
writing she had slipped in and look I
ing over my shoulder learned the situ I
ation Having told her story she con I
cluded
Ifl know it has been very wrong of
me to use you in this fashion but
Do you realize I asked that if
the saws arC discovered I run the risk
of going to prison myself I
I did not think of that I will con
fess to hove done it all myself I
I shook my head I
II What are you going to do i
I sat for some minutes deliberating
Neither of us spoke There was the I
usual going on of business outside that I
could be seen through a glass parti
tion but within the little inclosure all
was silent as the tomb Presently I
reached for a box of matches scratch
ed one took up my half finished tele
gram and burned it
Can you Imagine the look the girl
gave me No you cant Nor can any
artist paint it I saw it but once I
have seen looks like it since from the
same woman but they were as moon
light to sunlight
The saws found their way through
the prison cook an accomplice to the
prisoner He escaped and has never
been seen since in America His sister
Is my wife
Now you know why I am Interested

ATLANTA IS INCORRIGIBLE I
The Peace and Quietness that Should
Accompany Prohibition Seems I
Scarce in the Gate City 1I
Atlanta April 9There is a steady
increase in drunkenness according to
police records Despite the fact of j
prohibition the number of drunken t
eases put on the police docket is grow
ing continually in March there was
more drunkenness than during either
January or February of the new year i
and almost three times as much
drunkenness as during March of ISO j
The recorder says this condition is II
the first restraining
due to a relaxation from
straining effect of prohibition TheI
police attribute it to the nearbee sa
loons and the number of blind tigers
In March of the year that prohibi
tion went Into effect there were 134
canes of drunkenness There has since I
been a steady Increase with each
month showing a record in excess of
the past month In March of this i
year the cases of drunkenness were
245 This represents the apex that
has so tar been reached and when
compared with March of last year i
shows what the advance has been I
During the past January the cases
for drunkenness were 311 so that the
Increase since the first of the year has
been about 31
Records show that conditions are
now where the amount of drunken I
ness is practically as great as it was
before prohibition and if the pres
ent increase continues in a few
months it will be actually as great 11
The number of cases for drunken
ness In March 1905 was 353 but
eight in excess of the cases last
month in March in 1906 were 423
and in 1907 were 406
During the past month a total of
1542 case were made of which S2 I
and 32
were for idling and loitering
for violation of the prohibition law

J H HcCandless State Chemist of Georgia before a recent gathering of Cotton
of Collolcnc He said > >
Seed men gave emphatic praise to the high quality
The sale of this product and the proclamation that it is made of cot

favorably before the public than anything else in recent history
t

Mr McCandless then pointed out how a pure refined vegetableoil basis such as is
in Coll laze is the only assurance a woman has of a clean digestible cooking product
It seems a positive wonder in the light of all that has lately been said and written
and of what is known of lard where it comes from of what it may be made and how little
chance there is to get pure lard that anyone will continue its use when pure sweet and
