A MHEORlt CAREER ENDEDi
Edward Henry Harriman a Wizard
of Wall Street and Geni of Rail
way Organization is tend
New York Sept 10Edward H
Harriman died at 330 oclock yes
terday afternoon
The news came at a time when It
wa s hardly expected The reports
given out from the Harriman house
ho ld yesterday morning In the shape
of bulletins by Dr Lyle his attend
ing physician were to the effect that
Mr Harriman was improving I
Sketch of Harrimans Career
Edward Henry Harriman who
will go down In history as one of
the most spectacular financial gen
iuses most daring speculators and I
greatest railroad magnates of his
time was born at Hempstead Long
Js land Feb 25 1848 the son or
Rev Orlando Harriman Jr rector
of an Episcopal church in that town I
founded in 1702 The early life of I I
the future man of millions was one
of great poverty I
Harriman received his early edu I I
cation at the district school and
I I
supplemented it two
by a years I I
course in a boys school under
church auspices where the sons of
clergymen paid practically nothing
for their education
He began his career as a clerk in
a brokers office on Wall street He I
ash
showed no unusual ability and for
shm
many years gave no promise of his I
later brilliant development How he I
obtained his start and the funds
which enabled him to buy a seat on
th e New York Stock Exchange has
never been explained
Harriman married early in life
and married very well His wife I
was Miss Mary Averell of Rochester
wN
N Y
It was not until 1883 that Harri
man came actively into the railroad
field Along in 1883 he was eJect
ed a director of the Illinois Central
er I
railroad In 1887 Mr Harriman
became vicepresident He was then
Ji
about forty years old
Harrimans entry into the direc
torate of the Illinois Central rail
road marked the beginning of his
career as a manipulator of railroad
stocks and reorganizer of railroad
ss
systems which in the course of ten I
or fifteen years made him one of
the greatest railroad kings ever I
known in the United States and
kp LI
placed him in control of more than
I
54000 miles of water transportation I
lines and of railroad lines of an es I
timated length of nearly 27000
miles
During the panic preceding the I
election of President McKinley a
number of large western railroads
had gone to smash among them the
Northern Pacific aHl the Union Pa
cific The wreck of the latter was
particularly bad and seemed per
fectly hopeless A Morgan syndi
cate made an attempt to rescue the
road but gave up the plan in sheer
rd
disgust But Harriman never lost
his confidence lie formed a mix
ed syndicate backed by Kuhn Loeb
et Co of New York and including
two members of the Vanderbilt fac
tion two of the Goulds two of the
Boston crowd that had sunk mil
lions in the old Union Pacific and
several independent capitalists Har
riman being among them The road
was merely a line from Omaha to I
Ogden about 1800 miles long The
syndicate paid the government 58
000000 in cash and 27000000 to
settle with the holdest of the first
mortgage bonds
The same syndicate purchased for
3300000 a block of coal company
bonds and other railroads bonds and
amI
in the folowing month a group of
branch lines called the Kansas Pa I
cific for 6303000
In the summer of 1899 Mr Harri
man temporarily dropped his finan
cial schemes and took a scientific
exploring expedition to Alaska hav
ing fitted the same out at his own
expense The following year he
bought the Kansas City Pittsburg
Gulf railroad and reorganized the
Chicago Alton which he had ac
quired in the early spring of 1890
I Next came the Southern Pacific
which became part of the Harriman i
system on Feb 1 1901 The Union
Pacific executed a mortgage for 10
000000 and sold 40000000 of
bonds at par thus paying for the
stock of the Southern Pacific
In the following years Harriman
continued the extension of his sys
tem toward the east and south He
acquired control of the Illinois Cen
tral railroad ousting his former
friend Stuyvesant Fish from the
presidency obtained a strong hold
over the St Joseph and Grand Isl
and by using the credit of the Un
ion Pacific and through the Oregon
Short Line be obtained interests in
the Atchison Topeka Santa Fe
the Baltimore Ohio the Milwau
kee St Paul the Chicago
Northwestern the New York Cen
tral and several minor railroads
These railroads and his Interests in
the Equitable Life Assurance So
ciety and other Insurance companies
placed him in control of property
valued at more than 1000000000
and one of the most dangerous rivals
of John D Rockefeller J P Morgan
and James J Hill as well as a po
litical power particularly in the
west
Might Have Acquired Seaboard
Some time ago it was reported
that Harriman had his eyes on the
Seaboard Air Line system and con
templated buying it and with it gain
ing entrance to the Panama trade
via Tampa His private yacht came
here some time ago with some of his
railroad captains aboard to spy out
the land
THE LURID GLOW OF DOOM
was seen in the red face hands and
body of the little son of H M Adams
of Henrietta Pa His awful plight
from eczema had for five years de
fied all remedies and baffled the best
doctors who said the poisoned blood
had affected his lungs and nothing
could save him But writes his
mother seven bottles of Electric Bit
ters completely cured him For erup
tions eczema salt rheum sores and
all blood disorders and rheumatism

the feat Peary must have gone at
least 35 miles a day which could
only be possible over smooth ice He
said
The story almost takes ones

been even more wonderful as he left
the pole on April 7th reaching Cape
Columbia on April 23rd a distance
I of about 490 miles as the crow flies
o In the sixteen days march from the

that to reach Cape Columbia by
April 23rd he would be obliged to
