Nov IT Practically all of the bodies of the men who per I ished In the St Paul mine disaster t were found yesterday morning on a J stairway at the mouth of the third or I lower Itvol I Ont hundred and sixtyfight bodies were found leaving about a score to i 11 accounted for The bodies were In a great tangled mass completely blocking the staircase leading from I tin third to the second vein when thcy had dropped before reaching the stairway Black damp was the cause of their death All moans of escape from the mine was blocked by debris falling and covering the top of the staircase The men died as they tried to push through the obstructions or In wait ing vainly for rescuers Death evi dently did not come for many hours I if not days I That the men did not abate their 1 efforts to keej themselves ally while strength remained is evidenced in many way They had built rude ventilating fans I of wood and fastened them to the I walls of the shaft These fans were turned by hand in a desperate effort I to create a current of air and drive back the deadly black damp Vain hope it was as the look of despair with which death sealed many a coun tenance shows One of the men probably one of the last to succumb was found still leaning against the wall his hand gripping the handle of the fan When the rescuers stumbled through the I I darkness of this charnel house this inanimate body was the first one des cried and It wus at first thought that j at least one live person had been I found An accurate account of the victims j has not been made but It is believed I all but a score of the missing men I have been accounted for The bodies were found f 00 feet from the main shaft on an elevated surface where they retreated before the advancing water and fatal black damp They died after a struggle that continued possibly two days I Messages scrawled on wood and slate cropping from the walls placed the number of dead at 160 or 1C8 One I message read Wo are all here lo die together This is accepted by the mine of ficials as indicating that many men whose escape from the second vein I I was cut off by fire descended to the lowest level To take out the bodies n skiff was secured and lowered into I tho vein It is rowed across four feet of water in the vein to the spot where I thy bodies lie Could They Have Been Saved Many fomer workers in the mine protest angrily that the men would i nave been saved from the gas had not the ventilating fan been reversed aft er the discovery of the fire They as sert that the men retreated to the bridge where ordinarily the obnox ious gas would not have reached them Believing themselves Is no danger they fortified themselves against hun ger thirst and supposedly less danger of gas A TINY BABY cant tell you In words what the
