The New York Tribune, first issued in 1841, now in its

liberty, nud the pursuit of happiness" Republican in its

TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS & FRIENDS :
MISSOURI JDEMOCR AT.
The enormous increase in tho price of printing paper and
other materials used in printing newspapers, compels u to
increase the prico of The Democrat. Our new terms be
ginning on the first ef January, 1S63, are:
Daily Democrat Mail Subscribers, 1 year
$10.00. Price to newsdealers, $2.50 per 100.
Tki-Weekly Democbat Mail subscribers,
1 year, $5.00.
Weekly Democrat Single copies per year,
$2.00; three copies, $5.00; five copies, $8.00;
ten copies, $15.00
Any larger club than ten will be charged at
the rate of $1 .50 per copy.
The above rates for all mail subsciptions are payable in
advance. Orders not accompanied with ihe money, will re
ceive no attention. All papers, of either edition, will be dis
continued at the end of time paid for.
From the above it will be seen that wc shall raic the
price for the Daily, Tri-Weekly and Weehly Democrat on
the lst of January next. It is Ecarccly necessary to go in
to any detail to satisfy our friends of theabselute necessity
of tills step. All are familiar with the extraordinary and
rapid increase in the prices of printing paper, caused chiefly
by' the tailuro of the cotton supplies, and the consequent
scarcity of rags. As long as the war lasts, or until some
substitute for rag paper shall have been mannf.icturcd in
abundant quantities, these prices will contmt.e at their
present exorbitant figures, or. what is very probable, will
advance still higher. Again, the expenses of tho Democrat
Muring the coming winter and spring will bo nearly double
What they hate formerly been. We are determined to
make it a flrbt-olass newspaper, and, in pursuance of this
design, have already cm plojed a number of army corres
pondents have made arrangements to publish full reports,
both by telegraph and letter, of the proceedings of tho
Missouri and lllluois Legislatures have secured the con
tinuance of our important Washington "Specials" during
the scssionof Congress, and our Cairo "Specials'' until tho
Mississippi river is opened andalltheso in addition to our
regular office expenses, which our readers may concede arc
veryheavj', when wo tell them that in all the departments
of our paper we constantly employ a force of more than
ninety men. In view of these things, we believe our
friends will cheerfully agree with us as to the necessity of
an increase in our snliription prices.
1863. 1863.
PROSPECTUS OF
THE
NEW Y0SK LEDGER,
There is a great deal of talfe among our cotemporaries
about the '-great rise in tho price of paper," and the ne
cessity of a corresponding rise in thu price of newspapers.
We do not agree with our friends as to the last proposi
tion. It is true that paper has gone up frightfully fifty
per cent, at least, and is "still on its way up." Dut what
of that. Publishers have for jears had a good timo with
low-priced paper, and made largo profits; nud now that
times have changed they should pay the enhanced price
for paper without whining and attempting to get it buck
off of their subscribers. The incrcaso ofpaperwill maho
adifiereuceoftens ofthouwnJs of dollars tous j early; but
we shall not incjoase the prico of the Ledger. Tiht will re
main as it R Wo can afford it. The retail price will
continuo tobe4 cents; and our club terms as they al
wavs have been. Our subscribers have stuck to us when
paper was cheap ; and wo do not intend to increase our
rates to them now when it is dear- "Jt is a poor rulo
that wont work both wajs"
All our old conjnbuters hava been re-engaged for tho
ensunig year; our corps will be so largo, and will em
brace such avirietyofeniinent talent, that every depart
ment of literature will receive the particular attention of
some one competent to do it ample and special justice. In
fact, our contributors will send us from week to weeh
muih more matter thin we can possibly ue. so that we
shall alwajs have a fresh and superabundant supply from
which to select the icry best.
