Indeed this ould be a flue speculation! A considerable amount oftlie money necessary to purchase an engine could be realized from licensing the dif ferent business houses and manufactories. We hive no doubt that the business men would not object in the least to paying five or ten dollars each In this way for such a purpose. We are Informed by Mr. X. S. Curtis, agent of jhc Kansas Pacificat this place, that the ..:i,tcVnm KansasutT to sauna nave necn very mnch reduced. First class freight has been reduced 17 cents; second-class freight, 13 cents; third-class freight, 14 cents, and fourth class freight, 11 cents. This, reduction went tnp the first dav of this month. Freight by the carload is now $9 less than it was one "year since. We love to stretch beneath the shade, but prefer the shadows of the maple, the oak, or eveu the cottonwood, to the drooping sun flowers which over-arch the side-walks at our cod of the Avenue. We have received oftentimes urgent solicita tions from man v friends in the country to come among them, while they have promised us their assistance in getting subscribers, besides assur ing us that we would receive the most hospita ble entertainment. To all socb persons, jfe will state that we are making arrangements at present to visit them.- Although we have nev er as yet made any canvass in the country in the interest of our paper, though often prom ising, we propose now to do it. As far as we have been able to learn the far mers havcamutualanderstandlngamongthem- selres and continue the provisions of the herd Law in effect, notwithstanding the act lias been recently decided unconstitutional, by herding their cattle and respecting the rights of each other. Xext season, unless an effective law should be passed this winter, ot which there seems llttlcprobabilityatthlstimc, the fanners must fence tiiair lands and prepare to protect their crops against the incursions of unruly stock. It is it-ell that they should conclude to protect one another in their unprotected crops ; and, In face, it is the only alternative they have had after the late1 decision came so unexpectedly upon them. A Mexican, by the liamc of Lucius Light, was found dead by his companions on the morning of the2thof July, at the camp of Messrs. Baker & Rumrill's, on Gypsum creek. GlilWEIt, Coroner aline County, Kansas. We went to the circus. So did lots of other church members. Our devil was there too, tie sides several other del lis, too numerous to mention. Everybody wits there, except oneor two. and they ought to liave lieen there. A circus draws a bigger mass of beings tlian a fourth of July celebration, Henry Ward Beech er, or Cady Stanton. Oh my! iut fun to see the stately and dignified enter the arena, and with hats slouched over their 'eyes, peer with furtive glances to see if any there be ' w ho w ill tell on 'em." Tliejj blu.-h, (perhaps for the tlrst time in their life) and look shcepi'li ! But we dou't blame them. Anything to relieve monotony. A circus is a circii, the world over always the ramc; still the people will go. Let them go! We saw the uual ights at ' Lake's hippo-olympiad.' The band play cd like blazes, the horses ran like lightning, and the Wen wriggled and twMcd wonderful ly. Madam Agues was bourn! to the wild horse of Tartary, while her " delicate and MMi-ith e " form was hurled through ice quicker than a mule can kick. Ma.epp.i wa "powerful I v' acted. We Msirchetl for handkerchief to wilie away the fast-llow ing tear-;, but as we had none, we wiped on our coat sleeve. Menken, you are eclipsed two to one. One fellow twi-tcd himself into numbcrlcs shapes until we could no longer discover in h! in tlie human form dhiue, and in faet did everything except s al low himself, which feat he can ea-ily jierfonn after a little more exercise. The linlloon a ccni u was not the ga-.itcst uetr-s in the world. The balloon a-cended but Prof. Mile didn't, and thus was our special arti-t deprived of a visit to the stars. The parachute " liiut have been indisposed, for the balloon seemed to shoot off before there was a good ready. The ' ship of air" tunied a complete somersault after going up a few feet, and caught fire. The lire was spccdilyYwtinguislied; so was the balloon. There were the usual number ot side shows along, with their cro-cut saw like music. Our impre.ioi:s of the circus and its troupe, at tills distant date, arc, that lots of hard canted dollars have lieeu suddenly taken out of the country. Lincoln Center Items. Lincoln cou nty lias been blessed with frequent showers tiie past week, which will mature the corn crop beyond a doubt. The advantages that Lincoln comity holds over some other localities that have been re ceiving large colonics of immigrants, liave never been properly brought before the public. Her valleys are numerous, and consist in part as follows: the Saline river, the pn11dp.1l stream In the comity; Twelve Mile creek, Iteil Rock, Elkhorn, Beaver, Bull Foot, Yauger, Lost, Splllman, Twin Groves, Wolf, Coon and Spring creeks; alf which flow into the Saline. Salt creek, ami its tributaries, flow into thcSol- 0111011 river. These streams are all lined with plenty of good oak, walnut, hackberry, elm and cottonwood tim bcr, and broad valleys w itli soil inexhaustible. The surrounding bluffs fnnilsh the largest quantities of the finest mag- neslan lime-stone in the state. Stone coal crop-out in several places iu the county, and has already been pron ounced of the best quali ty by our smiths. The valleys and blufT lauds of this county arc particularly adapted to the raising and pasturing of stock, and are thickly covered with bine-gross, which furn Ulies a Fall. Winter and Spring range. The bluffs furnish the best Summer range for stock in the world. , When one takes Into consideration the variety of grasses that grows there as also the brooks and branches fed by the best of living springs, he is forced to the conclusion that ranges of tills kind are far more preferable than the tame pastures of the East. A glance at the map will convince any intelligent mind at once that Lin coln Center is located at the most central point to accomodate this valley that could have been selected In the eounty, and is just thirty-nine miles from the city of Salina by the sta'e road measurement. We have been creditably in formed by those who have the means of know ing, that there lias been at least ten thousand acres of sod broke In the county xhls season. If the rains continue there will be many more broke. The people of Lincoln Center and vi cinity are already moving in the matter of build ing a school house this Fall Mr. H. E. War ner is now teaching a very good and interesting school just two miles west of town. The Young Americans arc not behind our neigh boring towns, having orgaalaed a rwtr hall club with foil list oromcers, styRaf tkeciob, "the Prairie Hovers." "Thehest and most respectable citizen " that (we hope we have not committed a grammatical error in using " that " as a relative personal pronoun) consider himself specially abused Is the editor Loathe Herald himself he feels abused that we nave bad the temerity to establish anouicr news pa per in this city that, in publishing a credit able paper, we have shown to the good people of Saline county that the Herald was a puny concern, without spirit or a right to be classed among the respectable newspapers of the wide awake fraternity of the progressive State of Kan sas. Eight mouths ago the Herald was a dis grace to the community in which it was pub lished, and its late brightenlngs Up hart been. in most, the work df ethers' brains tliati the as sumed editor's own. ThccomingofTireJocR xal was welcomed by all as a relief from old fogy notions and a 'tfant, of enterprise, and only those who have stuck to the Herald in its evij ways and always had an apology for its ilelin quencles and inconsistencies have been those who rely alone to its Influence to be hoisted into some fat official position. The Herald has gained some notoriety and been given a prolific and extended subject In taking The Jocrx.il to task on divers and numerous occasions ; in fact, for Issue after issue Tiie Jouhxal has been the subject ot the leading and only editorial In theHerald. While it lias originated and repeat ed a sharp thing or two about ' a tempest in a teapot,"" whom, the gods wih to destroy they first make mad," 4c. he would lie an arrant fool who could not perpetrate a witticism at some time or another!) it has failed, as it has hi this instance, to answer, in honorable, manly, outspoken language, our assertions, but has attempted to shield Itself 'ou the high, moral ground that "wc could not be guilty of com mencing so small a thing," that we (Tub Jour- xal) had dreadfully outraged " some of our best citizen," &c. Attempting to be fastidious, it has given out that for the future it would pass us by unnoticed, but in the very next Issue, per haps, it would give us another overhauling for some indiscretion. In no instance have wc made a " drive " at the Herald except in reply to some of its unjust accusations. The one and great desire of the Herald, In wilfully misrep resenting us has lieen to place us in the light of seeking to abire good citizens without catie and as the enemies of morality and religion. Having accompIMicd that it knows full well it has gained a formidable point that would re sult materially to our disadvantage. In using, at times, some harsh words we have aimed at a reform that would work a salutary effect 11(1011 some of our institutions and to head off, in their unwic cour.e, men who sought by their wily machinations to fasteu themselves, as leeches, upon the people to their injury. We are not the great falsifiers, or the great tnlducers of the people, or the foes of morality or religion that the Herald would be pleased to prove 11. We have entered into a labor iu which wc propose to continue, notwithstanding the Herald may hope to frighten us from It by misrepresenta tions and obloquy. We are the subcrvcrs of a principle. In the future wc ask the Herald to calmly use argument and facts In it exception to our articles and ileal less in generalities and assertions alone. As-ertions are cay. but ar guments', bacd upon truth, are effective. Mtniiir.o. In tlii city, on tiie 30th ultimo, hyllev. J.Boynton, Mr. E. Ifoliert Gr.ir, to MI-s Anna Marie Eriekson.
