Ptisliln-; Class oT Citizens Correspondence Times Ciay Ckxter, 3lsy 5 Clay county i pre-eminently oce of the favored counties in Kansas for revercil reasons, Dot the least among which is her location ; her Boil is a magnificent one, her territory is well watered, che has the beat ol railroad and market facilities she U settled up by the beat class of Etatern immigrants, the cli mate is all that could be wished, her town-' are live, prosperous and pushing. She ib receiving large additions to her population every day, and thene who are coming in are of that clars which has some ready cash to live on even if the, first year crop shouldn't happen to meet expectation"; her taxes are light and her debts the is abund antly able to pay. She HAS GREAT NATURAL ADVANTAGES, which her people are utilizing and making the bet of ; ehe has good society and her schools are her pride; her churches make as good a showing in every way as any county in the State in fact, there are rev eral other ressins for making the remark with which thi article is begun, which can be omitted eimply beciuse the reasons al ready given are sufficient. Clay is one of the second tierfrom the Southern Xebrasks line, in latitude.about midway between S9 de. and 40 deg., and is eighty miles or so northwest of the center of population, ac cording to the cenns of 1S78. The county was organized in 1SG6, but it is from a on siderably later dsy than that that her GEEAT DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH can be fixed, for immediately after organiz ation was not the time .when she began her rapid progress. From 1S70 she went straight ahead, increased rapidly in popu lation, the vacant farming land was taken up acd improved, money was intested in manufactures, and from that time to thi all branches of trade, all industries acd the farming community prospered beyond the most f anguine and enthusiastic expectations In 1S70 the population of the county war 29G2; inlS75 it had risen to C.700; in 1S7S the census rolls showed 8,S00, while at the present time, making an estimate upon the returns made by several of the towruhipj, it is HARDLY T.KSS THAN TWELVE THOUSAND. People are pourine to the county from eve ry part of the country, and both firming and city property are in great demand, al though both, in eligible locations, can be obtained at reasonable prices. The surface of "the land of the county is gently undu lating, the soil being a rich, black vegetable meld. Of the four hundred and thirty-two thousand acres in the county, over nicety per cent, are tillable, none being waste, but all capable of being utilized. There are some magnificent grazing sections in this county, and indeed, considerable attention is now being paid to the raising of cattle, fine breeds not by any means being, neg lected. The bottom land of the county will average about eleren per cent , and the forest land, according to the government survey, is something over four per cent, the largest acreage of timber land of any cf the counties in the north west, the average usually being not much over two per cent. Indeed, it is something unusual to see a Kansas county, with the exception of thee bordering upon the Mis souri river, with a timber acircge cf four per rent, and in the matter of forest, therefore, Clay heads her competitors, and stands first among the counties of the ft.tte in this regard. Many farmers are also paying considerable attention to the PLANTING OF TREES, and the cultivation of artificial fores-t?, fo that, together with what nature has done for the county, and whst man is doing for her, Clay is "well fixed," vulgarly speaking. The average width of the bottoms of the county is from one half to three quarters of a inife, aud the width of the timber bells from one etebt to halt a mile, lhe varie ties of timb'r found aic the oak, cotton wood, black walnut, elm, mulberry, ash, lo- cu't and blackberry, and thoce cultivated extensively are the cMtonwood, black wal nut, rasple and box elder. It is a difficult matter to estimate the number of artificial forests in the county, as complete returns have never been made, whilelarge cumbers of treees hs.ve Ixrn plrnted nloog the high ways and in ecattered pitches. Fire clay is also re orted a having been found in the former, and tottery clay in the latter. THE COUNTY HAS TWO RAILROADS, the Junction City and Fort Kearney branch rf the Kansas Pacific road, runnicg from Junction City through Clay Center to Clifion, ami "the Central liranch of the Union Pacific road, which however, merely touches the county at Clifton. Sine the chinge ia ownership of the Kansas Central road, the people of the county are having high hopes of its extension from Onsga, in 1'oltawotomie ounty, westward to Clay Center, while the lact is in the matter be ing talked up and a proposition will prob nbly be made by the railroad officials, who, it is under-ttoot), are anxious to go to Clay Center, and wlM,are but waiting for some fort of a fair inducement. T3E EXTENSION OF THE KANSAb CENTRA!, would make a new era in westward rail roadies, an. I with the great capital now behind it is safe to presume that when the little iron pony begins his journey towards the petting sun, he will not rest until his shrill neigh reechoes among the rtvti berat ing canons of the mighty Itockies. The I eople of this part of the county have a great deal of faith in narrow guage rail roads and will most heartily aid in the furtherance of any scheme which will be ihe meacs of fecuricg to them the benefits of another eastern connection. A visit from the officers of the road to Clay Center will be made in a few days ami it will then be seen as to wt.at arrangements can be arrived at in rtgsrd to the nutter of aid. The extension of the road would he A BIO THING FOR THE COUNTRV through which it would pass, and be the means of building it up still more rapidly than at present, although the way in which the jieople are coming in at the pes ent time can't t-urely be grumb'etl at. Clay county's shipments of all article" tf farm produce for the past year were immense and if she should secure another railroad connection they would be proportionably greater. The county has already won a great name among the counties of the State, nd as a mMter of course with increased market and chipping facilities she will do better than she has ever before. The in crei'e of cultivated acres for 1S77 was over 17,003, and for 1873 SIUCH GREATER THAN THAT, while during the present year the figures of 1S77 will be fully doubled. At the present time there are nearly 150.000 acres under cultivation, an increase cf 50,000 in a little over a year and a half, which is simply an indication of the manner and rapidity with which the county is settling up and from which an idea can bs formed as to the in crease of population and the extent of the immigration which has been coming in of late. Some of the yields which clay county has given to the world have been astonish ing, and goes to slow of what Kan.-as soil is capable when business is meant and when the firmer gets down to work in dead earnest. As to dairy products there were 1,300 rOUNDS OF CIIEFSE JIASUFACTURED in the couaty in 1S77, that being the date of the latest repart made, while of butter there were something over 175,000 pounds made. The wool clip of 1S77 was nearly C,CO0 pounds. There are about one hun dred acres in nurseries in the coonty, the bearing trees being in about the following proportion: Apple, 1SC0; peach, 05,000; pear, 340; cherry, 1,200, and plum 5,000 Farmers are beginning to pay more atlen tion at the present time to horticulture, and the time is not far distant wb;n it will be one of THE CHIEF FEATURES OF THE COUNTY. The hen! law his been in force in the county sicc 1S7S. Of lm:es there are about 145,000 rods in the county, worth $100,000, the hedge being the most in u-e, about 70.000 rods lisvine been built. The hedge is rapidly growing in popularity, and besides being very desirable is cheap, and i', beyond doubt, the hand-omest bar rier a f miner can put arcund his place. Manufactures as yet have not asumed an importance i- the county, as compared to the other improvements, but all branches of industry are rapidly looming up, and soon Clay will be able to vie with even the most favored communities in this respect. The Republican river furci'hes ample water pjwer, whVh HAS BSE ) XTENSIVELY UTILIZED at Clay Center atd other place). There ia a wster-power and a steam flouring mill in ihe former city, which are doing a large business, acd, in fact, have all they in reality ran do, acd are pushed to fill all demands. The total assessed valuation of all property in the county, according to the last returns made, was $1,40000, the true valuation being $2,300,000. This year, how ever, the aed valuation will not fall short of $2,000 000. while a careful and tellable estimate of the real value of all property will show not less than $2.C00,C0O rROPERTT OF EVEtY KIND has increased in value, at a wonderful rate during the past year, bjth farming and city, which is in itself as good an indica tion as could be L-hed cf the growth and progress of the county. There are ninety organized school districts in the county, the school population being about 4,500. Seventy-two ol the districts are provided with good substantial building, and at the rate at which houses are being built it will not be long before every district is provided witn a Duuamg. seventeen school bouses were bnilt during the past year, acd the good work is still going on. If there is one thing more than another ia which Clay conaty takesspsinalprideitis her schools, aadrJsa fasten mad earn for thesaas Is built upon an educational foundation, m the county is valued at about $20,000. CLAY CENTRE. A more thrivinr, energetic, go-ahead town than Clay Centre, the seat of govern ment for the county of Clay, it is impossible to find in the- State, for this little city is the embodiment ar.d counterpart of enterprise itelf. Her population at the present time is not far from two thousand, which is rapidly increasing, the town having al most doubled itself within the cast two years. There is considerable building go ir on in the business part of the city, while handome residences are springing up on every side. Her merchants are live men, and enter heart and soul into any thing which can add in the least to the town's advantage or advance her interests. No bitter indication of WHAT A TOWN IS D0IN0 can be given than a statement of the bus! ness done through the pest ot5ce, and this statement has been furnished me by Mr. G. M. Stratten, the pcstmcs'.er herefor the pastqnarter: Money orders i-sned, 752; paid, 1S3; letters resi-tcrcd. 132: total sale of stamps, stamped envelopes, postal card', etc. $1,000 07; registered letters re ceived, ISO; lettered letters pas-ed through the oCce, 433. This is a good showing, acd one of which no town need be sshamed. Clay Center is an extensive shipping point, about two thousand car loads of grain and farm proJnce having foccd their way East from heie during the past year, while THIS YEAR'S BUSINESS, upon an estimate b:sd upon what has been doae eo far, will be much greater. The town has several elevator.), of good ca pacity, which are barely able to accommo dae the immense amount of grain which is constantly coming in. The anticipated ex tension of the Central Pacific road from Onaga to Clay Oder meets with thehtarty approval ot everyone, and every ellort pos sible will be put forth to fecure it. The people are wide awake to any ami every thing which will advance the interests of the town, and when he little iron pony knocks at the gate of the city IT WILL NOT KNOCK IN VAIN. Clay Center has good schools acd ample facilities in the way of competent instruct ors and commodious building', and everything comlusive to the interests cf edjeation being carefully snd promptly Hupplitd. The churches are liberally kept, many of them havirg fine buildings. There is no town in the State which has a bright er future before it than Clay Center, and it can with truth le said that there is no town in Kantas which better improves her apportunities. She hae everything in her favor; good location, good railroad facili ties, enterprising bu-dness men, acd with all these she cannot help but go ahead. She has ri-en from the barren prairse in a few hort yetrs, ami be one of Ihe queen cities ofthe (J"een State in the I'aijn, and no praine or eulogy, which can be jtven her is unmerited. John.
