The Norwegian Malstroem. Thl natural phonomonnn, which, ninre tlrrf ttninoinorial hat boon pictured in school books, and Id the imagination ot tlioir stu dents as a mighty whirlpool, lurking clown hip, whales, and other trilles, with n facility and ease quite remarkable, it effectual disposed of by a correspondent ejf Ihe Boston Recorder, on the coast of Norway, who has instituted certain full nd categorical inquiries of the intelligent hend of the .Norway Marine and Survey Departments. To these questions, Uio following replies are made, which cover tbe whole ground of the existence of the whirlpool, and of the nature and extent of the dangers attending its navigation. The replies are as follows : Although the Maelstrcem, at certnin times, and under rertain circumstances, of which we shall hereafter speak, may fee dangerous for both smaller and greater craft ; yet is the danger, In general, no tl that extraordinar character which specially in olden times was supposed stnd it can even, at times, be nassud bv boats. When the wind is stendy, and not loo violent, boats may venture upon it, in time of summer, yet rather at Hood and bb, for then it rests, or is still for a good lialfhour. At the point half way, be lwetn flood and ebb, and the reverse, (i. e., halt ebb and half floo'.i It is most violent, and boats ought not to attempt it. In general, and under before mentioned circumstances, it may be passed by largo ail vessels, or steamers ; also in lime ol pnng flood and spring-ebb. Tho dillcr roea between these is 9 Norwegian feet, vlii'e (hit of !he usual daily flood and ebb ( only six fed. wtJitroem may fit times be still, V.a with steady wind, be pinned by largo raft, and thatwhen circumstances are favorable even dnring tho whole in terval between ebb and flood, aud vice wis. Whirls do not show themselves, far, at least, not of such slrength us to prove dangerous for shipping. To pass the Mnelsruem in ft storm, es pecially in winter, is entirely unadvisable for whatever craft, great or small j and ven when such craft could clear itself in the open sea, it is neither to be expected nor hoped, in tiro Maelslrrom. The fol lowing remarks will explain this : The direction and violence of the Mnel trcBni are in a high degree dependent on wind and weather. When there blows on the sea a stoim from the west, it runs con tinually, in winter, to the east, with n, ra pidity of six knots an hour, without i.hanging its direction with tho rising or lalliug tide. At the point of tbb or Hood tide it may indeed, slightly moderate, or even tor a motneat sliovr ilself quite still, iut it immediately increases again in vi olence, and sets continually to the eant. If at such time the water is rifting, the trtam becomes excessively violent and ntirely unnavigable for tilher steamers er any other craft. In winter, it not unfreouentl v linnncns that, at sea, a bank of clouds show a wel term, with heavy sea to bo prevailing there, while farther in, on the coast, tho eilenr air shows that on the inside of tho "Weal-fjord, (east of Lofoden,) the wind Mows from the land, and sets out through the Ijord from the east. In such case es pecially an approach to the Maeltitnum in the highest degree dangerous, for the tienm and under-current from opposite direction work there together to make the whole passage one single boiling cauldron. such times appear the luigmy wniris which nave given tt the name of " Maelstncm," (i. e. the whirl ing orgrinding stream,) and in which rraft whatever can hold its course. For teamer, it is, then, quile inadvisable ttempt the passage of the MaeUtrmm during a winter storm, and, for a sailing vessel, it may also be bad enough in time eif summer, should there fall o culm light wind, whereby the power of the stream becomes greiter than that of the wind, leaving the vessel no longer under command. At one place only in the stream there Si shoal water found, called " Morgan," whioh at the depth of from seven to eight fathoms, is always manifest ; since e (even in still weather an, I with breaking on it) continually, as it were, iioils and grinds and thereby produces cum-white surface. To avoid this shoal one must hold either close under Hog Jiolmcne (the outermost reef on the north ide of the island Mosken) or under better the latter. Between Hogholmcne and the point of Woden, where the passage smallest; namely about 12,000 broad, the current runs strongest. omo points, it aets in crosswise towards the laud ; namely where it meets the current, which often runs violently the great current, but iu an opposite direction. That part of tho stream which Is Hogholmene and Mosken cannot assed at all, as it ia full of reefs hoals. We may finally remark that whirls the Maelstru'm do not, as was formerly nupposed, draw vessels to the bottom, Under the surface, hut that the violence of the whirls may Cll them, thrust grmst the land, or otherwise destroy them. No change has been remarked either n the violence of the stream.or in its l he latter consists in nart ot rock Hones. Pitch is tha official report on the Macl tnem. Everyday Enjoyment. is of no a to or A great error of urnn is the common one of intending to enjoy life by-nnd-by, after the work of life is done. Ho is bo busy, now, that he has no leisure lor en joyment ! as if the man of leisure enjoyed life. No, no; if we enjoy life nt all, it will be amidst its bustle Hnd toil; its work ing-days must bring its pleasures; its amusements must come, when needed, in the intervals ol business. Nobody has a right to give the whole ilav to toil; it he does it, lie is lalse to him self niiil to his friends, as he thus neglects great wants of hia nature, and unfits him self to do his work in the best manner The sunshine is ns bright, the wind is as gay, as if pleasure was their sole purpose 1 lie trees and plants aro as lieautilul they blossom as sweetly and play as gracefully with the cool breeze us if they developed ami matured no fruit. Work and enjoyment are compatible. Portions of every d'iy should bo given recreation; the mind being refieshed and the body relaxed by domestic or social amusements. Then, the work would be enjoyed as the play. It is a physical pleas ure to exercise the muscles nfier rest, es pecially if one has been amused during rest. And how buoyant i the mind re turning to its labor after it frolic, with the babies, or a cosy tete-a-tete with Nature! O holy Nature! from thy bosom one goes to his work an n child, at morning, awakes to the wonders of the world. If one cannot enj oy life, -all along, he passes through it, he can never enjoy it, If he toil unremittingly, till lie finds the leiure of life, he will find no enjoy ment, in that leisure nothing will exist vitalize it. In order to nccomiilish this desired object, tho true course to pursue Is certainly that which will produce n natural state uf things at the least liniard of vital slrencth nnd. life. For this purpiiso, I)r. Hosteller has in troduced to thin country 11 preparation bearing his name, which is not a new medicine, but one that has been tried fur years, giviiiR eatisfne tion to nil who have used it. The Hitlers operate powerfully upon the stomach, bowels, nnd liver, restorinn them to n healthy nnd TiRorous nction, mid thuii, by the simple pro ceas of strengthening nature, vnuble the sys tem to triumph over disense. For the cure of Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Kan sen, Flatulency , Loss of Appetite, or any Bilious Complaints, arising from n morbid innclion of the Btcmach or Uowcls, producing Cramps, Dysentery, Colic, Cholera Morbus, 4.C., thets Hitters have no equal. Iiiarrhusa, dysentery or fluT, so generally con tracted by new settlers, nnd caused principally by the chunge of water nnd diet, will be speedily regulated by n brief use of this preparation Dyspepsia, a disease which is prubably more prevalent, in all its various forms, than any other, and the cause of which may always be attributed to derangements of the digestive organs, can bo cured without fail by using IIOSTETTER'S STOMACH HITTERS, as pel directions on the bottle. For thin disease every physician will recommend Hitlers of some kind; then why not use an article known to be infal lible I All nations have their Bitters, an n pre ventive of disease and slrcngihcner of the sys tem in general ; nnd among them all there is not to lie found n more healthy people than the Oermans, from whom this preparation ema nated, based upon scientific experiments which have tended to provo the value of this great preparation in tho Bcnlo of medical science. Fkvrr anii Arte.
