New Pastor Starts Duties at East Claridon Church BY Nellie C. Adams Telephone E. Claridon 6-6289 EAST CLARIDON Our new student pastor and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Webb of Hudson, O hio, were present Sunday morn ing and Mr. Webb preached a very fine sermon. Our choir is taking a month’s vacation but the leader. Richard Miller, has arranged for some special mu sic for each Sunday during the month. On Sunday last, Miss Betty Antene sang a solo. The first group for the season of campers from Highbrook lodge, attended church services here on Sunday morning. As some of them cannot attend church during the year it is one of the “high spots’’ of their vacation to come to church. Members of the church willing ly take turns n going after them and returning them to the Lodge. C. Evans on Thursday, June 21. Mr. Ben DeMuth, who was in the hospital in Cleveland for several weeks, returned home on Tuesday evening of last week. Mrs. Phillip Adams left by plane on Wednesday of last week for a visit with relatives in U I tah, her former home. Friends here of Mrs. Maude Sloat will be glad tq know she is improving in health at the home of Mrs. Grace Saudy in Newbury. Mrs. Fred Cherman formerly of this place with her son and wife. Mr. and Mrs. David Cher man of Willoughby, were in town on Friday. They were calling on Mrs. Cherman’s granddaughter, Cynthia Laing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ken neth Goll and also on Mrs. Will Adams. Mrs. Hubert McWayne was at St. Luke’s hospital in Cleveland last week for an operation on her ear. Mrs. Charles Smith and chil dren are visiting relatives in Toledo this week. H. Bender and family in Urbana, to,give a band concert. On Thursday, July 5, the Wo mens Fellowship will meet at the home of Mrs. Lillian Dim mich and Mrs. Gertrude Price the hour of the meeting is 8:00 p.m. Hostesses for the meet ing are: Lillian Dimmick, Ger trude Price, Janet Hess, Lois McNish. While there, she attended the graduation of her grand-daugh ter, Sandra Susan, from Urbana Junior High School, where she was an A student and received among other honors, the Amer ican Legion Medal for scholar ship, leadership, courage, honor and service. She was one of five girls and five boys in her class of 256 to be so honored. Deena is also a fine scholor who will be a sophomore in high school in the fall. Mrs. Bender is attending the University of llinois this summer, while Deena and Sandra do the housekeeping and sewing. In addition to these duties, Deena studies piano and San dra has 4-H sewing and interior decorating, but both find time to swim often at Crystal Lake Swimming Pool in the nice park there. Mrs. Bender resumes her po sition as librarian at the fine junior high school library in September. Mrs. Stafford saw, also the graduation of 2,584 students from the university, among I whom were three in wheel chairs, three who were blind, two in braces from polio and two others who were handicap i ped- The fine address to the grad uates was given by Dr. Robert D. Calkins, President of Brook ins Institute of Research of Washington, D. C. Two of his outstanding statements were “Adaptation to our changing world is our most important need,” also “We must inform ourselves of the religious and cultural influences of other coun tries to understand them.” The Benders have many fine cultur ed and very finely educated friends from various other coun tries.
