Inspection.
Chief Kngi'ncer Perkins, ot "the
State JSuurd of l'ublic Works, has
returned from all inspecting trip of
the canals in Northeastern Ohio,
bay.- the Columbu- - Dispatch. He
inspected the canals from Cleveland '
M the coal field-, and found them in
much better condition than was ex
pected. On that division of the canal- he
found about i boats engaged in the
coal, clay and lumber bu-ine--. and
he expre-sed the opinion that the
number would be largely increa- d
if the owner.- of tin property were
assured that there wa- to be any
stability of the canal .-y-tem of the
State. When the canals were con
structed it was with a view or carry
ing CiO ton- burden, but be found that
they were even now carrying a- high
a.- TO tuns and that will be increa-ed
to 83 ton after the-spring work is
completed. The "winter h;i- been one
of the hardest in the hi-tory of the
canals for they were closed to navi
gation for a number of months.

From Her Unfaithful Hus
band Walter T.Carter.
JOnce Forgiven of His Wrong Doings.
He Forgot His Promises.

been brought to public notice by the
1 hearing of an action for a divorce,
instituted by his .excellent wife in
! the Hamilton county courts.
She was given a decree Thursday,
freeing her from the obnoxious
, union with her erring husband. The
I 'Enquirer has the following to say in

hu-band.- duplicity was revealed
yesterdayin the Divorce Court when
Judge Jelke heard her suit for a le
gal separation from Walter T. Car-
j teV. It will be 'recalled that not long
ago a sensation was created by the
discovery that Carter, who wa- in
the laundry business, had left the
city, and that a woman named May
Tighe had evidently gone with him.
A receiver was appointed for liis
, business and steps taken to straight-
' en out his affairs with lU creditors.

I tion to leave the city was when his
1 mother, Mrs. Xoah Carter, showed
her a letter .-he had' received from
her son, in which he -aid he was go
ing to South America. When Mrs.
Carter told her story and the other
witnesses told theirs yesterday, it
was learned how she came to" know
of his afTair with May Tjghe. Ifc
seems that the woman had had two
children, of which Carter -was the
father. He had called Br. W. F.
Taylor to attend the woman. After
ward a friend of Carter got an inti
mation of the matter, and, thinking
that Br. W. L. Taylorwas the physi
cian, quizzed him about it. The lat
ter, of course, suid he ws not the
doctor, and then, thinking to befriend
Carter, told him of what was being
said on Price Hill about him. Car
ter confessed that the stories -were
true. Fearing that his wife and her
family would soon hear of the affair,
he confessed the whole matter then.
On his promise to Imve nothing more
to do with the woman he was for
given. But he did not keep his
promise, and the woman would not
permit him to throw her aside. Mrs.
Carter wa married in 18S7. Shewas
granted a divorce."
