The scarcity of freight cars alloVer the country is crippling business to a big extent. The local freight agents keep the closest tab on all cars and yet they cannot commence to get enough for the shipment of Akron products. Elsewhere the conditions are the same. Mr. Will Christy telephoned to the Carnegie Steel Co. at Home stead, Pa., today, to learn when the steel would arrive in Akron for the Hamilton building. He was told that all available space in Carnegie's yards was packed with steel and that it was utterly impossible to get enough freight cars to ship the fin ished products. No definite date could be given when the steel would reach Akron. LIKE GOOD COMPANY? You'll have lots of it if you always have a supply of the Model Bakery's homo made candy at your homes. SHUMAKER ! & CO.'S ! $21, $3, ! $3J I SHOES Washington-, Oct. 27. The navy de partment has made public tho report of Rear Admiral Charles O'Neil,-' chief of ordnance. It shows a satisfactory con dition of affairs iu the ordnance branch of the service iu all departments save that of armor. Congreos last year limited the price of armor to $J00 per ton. Only one firm put iu a bid and that at $450 per ton. 'J liese bidders had no mannfact- uimgpliut whatever and the bid was not tousidoreu. The contractors claimed that it was impoMiole to bupply Krupp proee&s ar mor lor $JU. per tou, and the depart ment, iu older to avoid a delay in the completion of certain vessels already contracted for, was obliged to contract for a comparatively small amount of ar mor, aggregating -J.268 tons tor the vest, elb ot the Maine class and for the four harbor defense monitors. There remain still to be contracted lor u total ot 21,45$ tons for the three battleships of the Maine class, for tho three hattle fchipa authorized by the act of March. 2, lSUJ, una for the thiee first-class eruii ers. He deplores the suggestion that the ordinary face hardened armor should be used in the new vessels and urges that the mutter should be laid before cougre&s as scon as it assembles, and that it be urgently requested to make such provision in the early days ot the session by joint resolution or otherwise as will enauie the navy department to make contracts not later than January, 1000, lor the best quality of armor that can be obtained. The same should also be done, he says, for the six armored vessels authorized by the act of March 3, ISO!). Tne question of a government armor factory, he says, should have no bear ing upon the bupply of armor for the Maine, Ohio and Missouri, as it would be impracticable to- obtain armor from such a source in time to complete these vessels. He say, in conclusion, that it is qmtu evident that the building of armoied chips of war must soou be dis continued by .tliis government nnless the vexed question of the supply and cost of armor can bo disposed of.
