FIELD AND GARDEN". Edited kr M. H- BATEIIA.TI. YELLOW BLIGHT OX RASPIJKRIifES. M. T. Gare wislie3 to learn w hether tivere is any remedy foi the "yellow Might that has come upon his raspberry and blackberry bushes within two or three years past, and seems to be in creasing each year, so that he is appre hensive it will destroy his plantations unless it can be checked. If any of our readers have discovered the crop i anything like a remedy for this disorder we should be glad to hear of it. It has anoeared. imore or less, in almost all parts of the country, and may be seen occasionally on wild as well as culti vated blackberries. It is a kind of fun gus or parasitic vegetable growth, and when it once attacks a plant there seems to be no remedy but'to dig it up and burn It to prevent the disease from spreading as it will do if allowed to re main, f As the disease evidently eftects the roots as well as tops of the plants it 13 of no use to simply 'Oiit them off when they shojv it on the foliage. If we were intending to experiment for the sake of finding a remedy, we would try dusting liberally with sulphur, also using plas ter of-paris about the roots. Watering with copperas (sulphate of iron) dis solved in water, might also be useful. Sulphur In any of its forms or com pounds is the best specific known for all forms of mildew and fungus diseases. J-. ' GAKDKX HINTS. The ?ong drouth in these parts, has sadly disarranged garden work and caus ed failure of a good deal of planting. But where rains have occurred of late much of the damage can be remedied by time ly efforts in replanting the vacant places. Wc would still sow beets and carrots if wanted and suitable ground at hand. Tartial shading of the beds will now be necessary and watering occasionally if "dry weather until the plants appear. Cucumbers and sweet corn may still be planted ; also snap beans, and white beans for winter. Tomato plants, If strong, may still be planted, also cauliflower and cabbage winter cab bage will be in time a week or two hence. Gijro water to these freely when planted, then if the ground is moist they will root very quickly. Planting Celery need not be done be fore the middle or even last of July ; as this vegetable is not wanted until early winter and it is sweeter and better when grown after the heat of summer is over. , Select deep and moist ground if possible, and procure good strong plants, that have been transplanted,, so as to have THE FRCIT PROSPECTS. .Some of the papers accused us of croaking, last spring, when we predicted a general scarcity or', failure of fruit crops in Northern Ohio hla year. But now it is seen that peaches, cherries, grapes and blackberries have failed; strawberries were a very light crop, and raspberries and currants wiil not be over half the usual amounts. Pears will not be over one third of a crop, and the great staple, apples, not "one tenth of a crop of fair fruit; lor, as usual, when s wormy, and a large snare nave aireauy fallen from the trees or will soon do 'so. If this also is croaking, we shall be glad to find it so. state of the communion Question in England is, indeed, doleful -for there, bui in the highest degree encouraging to those who are anticinatinir the time when all the barriers to Christian com munion will be broken down. These gentlemerr addressed a pnblic meeting fa Brooklyn last week, setting forth the feebleness of okse communion in Eng land, and the fearful inroads that open communion is making in the churches and among the people. The few strict Baptist churches that remain can't get ministers of their own way of thinking, and many or the many of the open- communion churches have lost their church proper- x. .. .. : I. There will' be an important meeting of the Society at the time of the State Fair at Mansfield the lirst week of September. Pomologicai. Congress at Boston. The Biennial meeting of the American l'omological Society occurs at Boston the second week of September, and is expected to be the most important meet ing of fruit growers, and the finest dis-; play of fruits that has ever occurred on this continent. Some of the far western States arc even making arrangements for hiring through cars to transport their fruits and fruit growers to that meeting. Of course it will be expected that Ohio will make a good showing on this occasion, and the committee of the State Society will make arrangements for sending fruits'for a State collection, from the State Fair and fiom indvidual growers, at the proper time, of which particular information will be given by circular. . Skxdtxg Ohio Fruits to Vienna. Dr. Warder, the president of the Ohio Hor ' ticultural Society, is in attendance as one of the Commissioners at the great Exposition at Vienna, which is to con tinue open until October, and he i3 very desirous that a display should be made of Ohio fruits, which can be sent there hy steamer in September; the commit tee of the Society will therefore make arrangements for packing and sending apples and pears for this purpose, di rectly from the State Fair. Growers of - such fruits in central and" southern Ohio will be requested to bring to Mansfield extra Famples for this purpose. PRANKS OF THE POTATO BUGS. The report of "immense swarms" of potato bugs being seen flying west ward over the village of Chardon, a week or two since, was so extraordinary that we took pains to make inquiry about the matter, and from two persons who were observers of the scene we learn that while it is true a large num ber of the beetles were seen for an hour or so flying westward over the town, there was nothing that could properly he designated a "swarm," for at no one time could a person count a dozen bugs in view at once. It is evident therefore that the story was largely exaggerated, and it was only a foraging party, not a movement of the grand army of bugs. Another "great swarm" of the bugs was reported as seen near Conneaut fly ing towards the lake one hot day, and it was suggested that they had probably become disgusted with the dry weather and backwardness of the potato crop, and had. resolved on committing suicide by drowning, like the herd of possessed swine. But as they seemed to be all back again the next day, it is presumed that they only went to the lake for a drink and a cool bath. We learn how ever that they, have appeared in force in Chautauqua and Erie counties (along the lake shore) of western New York, and possibly they migrated there by wa ter. At tliis time .Tune. 20th, the potato fields in this vicinity are not generally ho badly infested with bugs as was an ticipated. Most of the potato growers have fought off the first brood of beetles, so that the number of eggs deposited on the plants was not very great hence the brood of larvse now at work is not sufficient to do serious mischief, except ing where the parent beetles were left unmolested. " And now by giving the plants one. or two wettings of Paris green, it i probable the crops can be saved from serious injury; though bee tics will shortly conic again from places " where they havc..been allowed to leed " and multiply, and if unmolested will de posit eggs for the second or third brood of larvso. of the Pope, as much so as Victor Email ucl in Italy. Well may the old man pray to be delivered from his friends. The Swiss Government too maintains its stand, having semi-officially inti mated that it will not receive an envoy belonging to the Clerical party in the room of the French Minister, who has tendered his resignation. The ghostly tyranny of Rome lias lost its power even to frighten the people of Europe. They only laugh at the bugbear. Late dispatches from Rio Janerio state that the conflict between the clergy and secret societies continued to agitate Bra zil. The Ministry had taken strong grounds on the subject.and were gaining support for their policy. ' In the Lower House the Premier made a speech defending the Free Masons, and promised that- energetic measures would be takeu to prevent the bishops and the Jesuits from interfering with the society. - The Pope's Trials. The troubles of Pio Xono and the Jesuits, instead of di minishing only "multiply and still in crease." The contest with' the German Government goes on without any flinch ing on the part of the Emperor, and the Pope is compelled to succumb at every stage. The Roman Catholic bishops of Germany having declared that thev can not accept the new laws regulating the training of the clergy, the official 7our :ial has published an . article indicating that the Government intend to pay no attention to the protest and to enforce the laws. If there is one virtue which most com mends Christians,' it is that of kindness; it is to love the people of God, to love the world, to love all. But how many have we in our churches, of crab-tree Christians, who have mixed such a vast amount of vinegar and such atreraendu ous quantity of gall In their constitu tions, that they can scarcely speak one good word to you. They imagine it impossible to defend religion except hy passionate ebullitions; they can not speak for their dishonored Master with out being angry with their opponent; and if anything is awry, whether it be in the honsc, the church, or anywhere else, they conceive it to be their duttf to aet their faces like flint, to defy every body. They are like isolated icebergs, no one cares to go near them. They float al)out on the sea of forgetfulness, until at last they are melted and gone; and though, good souls, we shall be hap py enough to meet them in heaven, we re precious glad to get rid of them on earth. They were always so unauiiable in disposition, that we would rather live an eternity with them in heaven than five minutes o.i earth. Be ye not thus.
