fA !.' 'J WELLINGTON ENTERPRISE, WEDNESDAY, 20, -1885. i DELICATE OPERATION. Esooverlngr a Set of Teeth From a Patient's Throat. Bow 8b LoaU Hun Wu Relieved From ; Terr Perilous Position Removing 1 Bobber Plate and Teeth Which Wer. Inadvertently Swallowed. St. Louis Globe-Democrat jtrate flours of man In an upper itory of the houia No. UJO Blddle street, vaster. Iday morning, watching earnestly the ef forts of a short, wiry, blackeyed eol Jeague to extraot with a pair of forceps a set of artlflolal teeth that was looated In the man's oesophagus. The effort was fruitless, and after a short consultation It was agreed that an operation should be performed. The teeth had been pre viously located by the Introduction of (sound through the mouth. Tbey were found to be situated in the oesophagus, an inch o two above the articulation of the clavicle with the sternum. The most In tense Interest was manifested then In the operation. The chief- figure, the short, black-eyed man alluded to, rolled np his shirt-sleeves and cast his eye over a glit tering array tot instruments, the patient in1 the meantime being placed under the Influence of chloroform. ( The patient was Joseph McOowan, a fireman by occupation, and thirty-three years of age. On the night of April 84, as the clock In the church tower close by struck the hour of midnight, McOowan awoke to the realisation that be bad swal lowed a small Jagged rubber plate which 'held together four upper teeth. Alarmed for his life be Immediately sought the services of a well-known surgeon, who, after learning of his trouble, sent him to a more distinguished brother. The latter doctor treated him until Thursday morn ing, confining the exercise of bis profes sional skill, however, to the work of push ing the teeth down the throat, with the purpose of baring them pass Into the stomach. The teeth refused to entirely go down, and, wild with pain and weak with a fortnight's absolute fasting, McOowan sought out Dr. Bernaya It was Bernays, with a oorps of assistants, who surrounded McOowan when a Globe-Democrat repre sentative was ushered Into the bouse yes terday morning. ' Selecting the proper Instrument, Dr. iBernays, at exactly 10:05, made an incision three Inches In length along the anterior border of the sterno-cleido-mastoldeus muscles in the left side, or, in other words, be cut a three-inch gash at the bottom of the neck, just above the breast-bone and along the line of the collar-bone. Then picking np a blunt, pointed dissector tht doctor inserted it In the wound and pushed Important blood vessels aside to the left, and the trachea and thyroid gland to ths right. The oesophagus then being exposed. the doctor Inserted his finger and an nounced that be distinctly felt the plate and the teeth. He opened the oesophagus very slightly, Introduced a blunt, pointed Knife and eularged the opening sufficiently ito extract the teeth. As the plate came to Sight the greatest enthusiasm was mani fested by the spectators, each of whom ex amined the ugly body which had so nearly cost the man his life. Dipping the sponge In a basin of water, the little doctor began the work of cleansing the wound and sew ing together the skin that had been sepa rated by the knife. Before clos ing the wound a rubber tu bo was placed In it for drainage purposes. Dr. Bernays then smartly rapped the patient on the cheek once or twice and aroused biin Ir ra the stupefaction the chloroform had placed him in. A gleam of intelligence shot across the dull eves as the doctor held the teeth befoie them, and the mouth broke into a grim smile, "tie's all right now; put blm to bid," said be. The patient had be in lying on a table, and, In deed, he seemed to be all right, for he walked a few steps alone. Before being placed In bed he was given a glass of milk, part of which be swallowed. Borne of the milk escaped through the sovered oesophagus and dripped tbrough the rub' ber drainage-tube. It was a very daring operation, and on of the doctors present said that few men could have done it. Tue difficulty lay In the fact that all the Important arteries and blood vessels are In -he throat. The operation has n ) ver before been performed In this city, and but seldom In the United States. It will, therefor, be read with Interest by all Inter tod In surgery. It was concluded at 10:30, the tli I occupied having been exactly tweity-five minutes. The quantity of blood, lost was less than two ounces. The Best Dressed Woman la Europe. Cardiff Mall. How Colonel) Ellloott Killed a Turkey and Saved His Lire. w Columbus, (Go.) Special. There Is in possession of the descend ants of Colonel Andrew Elllcott, of this county, a wampum belt of rare beauty and value, which Is preserved as a me mento of the shrewdness and skill 'of the great surveyor, by which he not only be cam the possessor of tbe belt, but saved bis life and fie lives of many others. Di rectly after the purchase of Louisiana from the French Government Colonel Elll cott was sent by the United States Gov ernment to survey the boundary 11ns be tween tbe new territory and Mexico, which then Included Texas. He was accompan ied by a large oorps of engineers and 100 Government troops. They had penetrated Into the i Interior of the then wild country, when one day Ellloott and his engineer corps found themselves surrounded by a large body of Indiana, by whom the entire party was captured. Colonel Elllcott had a half-breed Inter preter, who found out that It was the Intention of the Iudlans to massacre the white captives, and he Informed the chiefs that his master was a great medt cine-man, who could do many wonderful things, among them being his ability to kill a man or any living thing at a dis tance of 150 yards, while the object he shot at was hidden from view behind (a tree, and he would not aim at it or shoot through the tree. The chiefs said that If the interpreter's master would kill a wild turkey In that way, they would give the whole party tbelr liberty. Colonel Elll cott was not a good rifle-shot, but he was able to do many clever things In shooting by means of mechanical tricks. When the decision of tbe chief was given they procurod the turkey and told Colonel El llcott to exhibit bis power. Confident of his success he drove a stake In the ground a few feet beyond the trunk of the tree, with an axe. Tying ths turkey firmly to the stake so it could not move from its position, he walked In an oblique direction to one side of the tree and struck the blade of his axe, appar ently with no design, Into the ground and then made a mark on It with chalk. Facing off IS) yards, he aimed at the chalk-mark and fired. The Indian chief ran behind ths tree and brought the tur key out dead, the ball glancing from the axe, having passed clear tbrough its body, with such nicety had Colonel Elliott cal culated the angles. The principal chief was so delighted with the feat that be un clasped the magnificent belt he wore 'and 'fastened it about Colonel Ellicott's waist. The surveyors were given their liberty, and the belt worn by the Colonel Insured him and his party safety and reverence during the remainder of the survey. FRIVOLITY AND FASHION. Sir. Jasper Views the World In Amuse ment Because of These Falling-. Boston Beacon. Mrs. Jasper lived out In the country away from frivolity and fashion. On one occasion, when her husband was going to the city to soil a car-load of potatoes, she admonished him to be sure and remember what the styles were, so he could tell her. "You bet 1 did, Balrey." "Was thoy great?" "They were powerful, Salrey. " "They was, Bairey Jasper, I tell you. GALVANIZED ICE CREAM. Forty-three Persons Poisoned at a Chureb Sociable In Connecticut. Korwalk (Conn.) Special. Rowayton, or Fiva Mile River, as It is mora familiarly known, is a village of not more than 200 Inhabitants, about four miles from here. The Inhabitants era chiefly oystormen ' and tbelr families. There is on church In the placa A fund was needed to make some necessary re pairs on the church edifice, and, to raise it, it was decided to hold a church sociable and supper. Tbe refreshments were to ba provided by the members of the society. Saturday night last was the time Set for the supper, and among the eatables furnished was a quantity of home-made Ice cream, donated by a Mrs. Tutile. This article was In great demand, all . present partaking of it. Soon after tbe sociable wai ended those who had eaten of the cream were taken sudden 111. Phys iclans were hastily summoned, and by prompt, measures succeeded In relieving ths patients. The symptoms In all tha cases were those of corrosive poisoning. Dr. C G. Bobannao, of South Norwalk, made an investigation. He found that In making the cream Mrs. Tuttle bad used a tin freeser having a galvanised bottom. Tbe doctor's opinion Is that the gsJvaulo action of the metals, caused probably by tbe "churning" of the cream in tba pro cess of freeslng, developed a corrosive poison which permeated the oontenta of the can. Forty-three persons were poisoned la alL None have died, though tba resu'.t would have been fatal In many cases but for the prompt arrival of the physicians. Many of the patients are stili confined to their beds. A Brooklyn boarding-house keeper says she thinks she would like to board printers, as she bears they don't like "pi." Brook lyn Eagle.
