Knapp, of Penfield. was the oldest . resident in the township not in years but In point of time. His mother, Mrs. Grace Knapp, with her husband Stephen Knapp came from Delaware Co., N. Y., there about 64 years ago, and the wife carried her baby twenty months old, in ber arms on horseback from Elyria through the woods when there were no roads other than an Indian trai'. Stephen Knapp was a great hunter and this oldest boy was familiar with every phase of pioneer lite. He was a close observer, fond of nature and ot music, a loyal; warm hearted end gener ous friend, a skillful mechanic, an ener getic, industrious, eccentric, but honest man, of more than ordinary native en dowments snd hsd many friends. Mrs. Llda K. Romick, who has been preaching at the M. E. church for two weeks, is a remarkable woman in ber calling. Her familiarity with the Script ures, ber readiness of speech, excellent command of language, never hesitating for the right word to express her thought with clearness and force, ber fervid earn estness in presenting plain practical truths and tbe grace, modesty and taste of her manner r.nd methods make her a most effective expositor of divine truth She went SaturJay to Steubenville, for a ten days engagement and then will go to Delaware, Columbus snd Msrlon. About two weeks later a member of the firm of Bennett Bros, ft Co. called upon the com mittee and desired to have the contract made with the town canceled. The rea son assigned was that a union ot Ideas could not be perfected between the two firms, and various other reasons that tbey did not care to make public and if this wu granted about tbe same number ef buildings ot the same dimensions would be erected, but not within the time stipu lated in tbe contract, and u many men would be employed as the business would warrant Tbe parties In Norwalk were Interviewed on the matter, and they were perfectly willing to have the contract revoked and the money already paid in returned to the subscribers. t -it W.&L.
