SENATOR HANNA'S FACE-ABOUT ON TRUSTS.
The position taken by Senator Hanna towards trusts in his
speech in Star Turn hall on the South Side Wednesday evening
has caused general comment and filled a large number of his Repub
lican followers and associates with surprise and dismay. They
"don't know where they are at," if the senarbr.s language is to be
taken as Republican doctrine. That he spoke advisedly and with
full understanding of the effect of his words cannot for a moment
be doubted. What, therefore, his astonishing change of position on
the trust question portends is what troubles the Hanna Republican
followers exceedingly, says thu Cleveland Plain Dealer.
A little over four months ago the Republican state convention
was held in Columbus. It was Senator Hanna's convention. He
owned it, body and breeches. In what manner he came to own it
is well known history, and therefore not necessary to relate
It was a Hanna convention, and that is all need be said
about it here.
4 Senator Hanna's state convention hnd something to say con
cerning trusts, and it said it in decidedly positive language. Trusts
were declared to be "iniquitous and dangerous combinations" and
"inimical to the interests of the people."
The party organs at once pulled out the trusts stop and playe J
in loud accord with the note given by Senator Hanna's convention.
The party spelbinders prepared speeches on the same line, and there
was a general outburst of Republican denuueiation of the "iniqui
tous and dangerous combinations" popularly known as trusts,
throughout the state.
On Wednesday evening last Senator Hanna, the same Senator
Hanna who owned and bossed the Republican state convention,
which searched the dictionary for hard words to throw at the, trusts,
made a speech to a Republican gathering in this city and discussed
trusts. He said, "These combinations known as trusts are not a

political question at all." Mr. Hanna's state convention has made
a leading political question of them.
"They are simply and purely a business question," says Mr.
Hanna in October. "They are unlawful, iniquitous and dangerous,"
said Mr. Hanna's convention in June.
That there may be no charge of misrepresenting the position
of Senator Hanna today, or that of Senator Hanna's convention last
June, the deliverance of Mr. Hanna's Republican state convention
last June, the deliverance of Mr. Hanna's Republican state conven
tion on trusts is printed below, side by side with the trusts para
graphs from Senator Hanna's South Side speech last Wednesday
evening.
HANNA STATE CONVENTION PLAT
FORM, JUNE 2, 1899.
We commend the action of the seventy-third
general assembly of Ohio in
posBing the stringent law now on our
statute bonks, prohibiting the organi
zation of "truBts" and we denounce
such unlawful combinations as inimi
cal to the interests of the people.
We congratulate the people of the
state upon the fact that a Republican
legislature enacted this law and we
demand IU rigid enforcement.
V e plege our party to such further
legislation as . experience may deter
mine necessary to prevent the forma
tion and operation of such iniquitous
and dangerous combinations.
Nothing that has developed in the pending campaign has so
unmistakably shown the fraud and pretense of partisan politics as
the identical advice given the Ohio citizenship by the three lead
ing political bosses of the state.
McLean is the undisputed boss of the Democratic party of Ohio.
Hanna is the undisputed boss of the reigning faction of the
Republican party in Ohio.
Foraker is the undisputed boss of the beaten and humiliated
faction of the Republican party of Ohio.
Yet on the fundamental issue of Popular Rj!e vs. Boss Rule,
their principles are the same.
Their partisan differences are a pretense and a sham. The
Democratic leaders appeal to the people against the "high crimes
and misdemeanors of the Republican administration as witnessed
in the Philippines; they charge their opponents with "imperial
ism," witlf the ruthless exploitation of a people struggling for lib
erty, with cold-blooded murder, with acts which were scarcely par
alleled by Alva and Weyler. They charge them with legislation
that has fostered trusts and monopolies with an administration of
law which has shown extreme partiality to the rich and brutal in
difference to the poor.
The fraud and insincerity of it all are proved beyond question
when the Republican bosses of the State beg the awakening people
to vote the "traitors" and "copperheads" and "demagogues" into
office, and when the chief Democratic boss begs them to vote the
"murders" and "imperialists" and "robbers" and "plutocrats" into
office, rather than elect the defender of popular rights, SAMUEL
M. JONES. .
Voters of Ohio, this is the situationl The issues upon which
the bosses have divided you into two hostile armies are a confessed
fraud a fraud practiced for the purpose of lining you up each year
to be plundered. What is your answer this year, '99?

HANNA SOUTH SIDE SPEECH,
OCTOBER 18, 1S99.
I want to discuss the question of
trusts from the standpoint of a business
man. It is conceded that every mao
has a right to do as he chooses with his
own property, if he does not harm his
neighbor. These combinations known
as trusts are not political questions at
all. They are simply and purely a bus
iness question.
They have the best men of the coun
try at their head. We ull believe in
co-operation. I believe in their organi
zation. They are along the same
line as organizations of capital and
labor not to tight each other, but to
help each other. It has been said that
trusts are against your interest. That
may be. But if they are yon may de
pend upon tha Republican party to look
after that.
