Columbus, Nov. 21. The ofBdai ra
turns were made public last night.
Ever since election day Becretary of
8tate Kinney has bau expert account
ants at work makintr the totals, and
owing to the delay in many counties,
where tangled factional conditions in
duced voters to scratch their tickets,
the return did not all get in until late
yesterday afternoon. The totals
were then hastily made, and the fol
lowing is the result:

A. HO
PRESIDENT GARRET
BART.
Mr. Hobart was born in Monmouth
county, N. J., June 2, 1844. He en
tered Rutgers college in 1860 and
graduated In 1863. Thereafter he
taught school until be entered the law
office of 8ocrates Tuttle, of Paterson,
N. J. He was admitted to the bar in
1869 and began the practice of law
with Mr. Tuttle. He became the clerk
ot the grand jury in 1865 and was ap
pointed city counsel of Paterson in
1871. He was elected counsel for the
board of chosen freeholders in 1872
and was elected to the leglsfatnre in
1873. He was re-elected to the as
sembly in 1874 and was made speaker
in 1876. He entered the senate of
New Jersey in 1879 and in 1881 was
elected speaker of that body. In 1876
Mew Jersey sent him ss a delegnte-at-large
to the national republican con
vention and again in 1880 the same
honor was bestowed upon him. He
was elected a member of tne national
republican committee in 1884 and
served continuously upon that body
until 1896, when be was nominated
for the vice presidency of the United
States.
By the death of Mr. Hobart Senator
William P. Frye, of Maine, becomes
president pro tem of the senate aim
will discharge all the duties of the vice
president as presiding officer of that
body. The senate rules provide thai
no election is necessary at the begin
ning of the session. . Senator Frye ac
cordingly will continue as presiding
officer till the end of President JIcKin
ley's administration, unless he chooses
to resign, or the senate wishes to elect
another senator to the office.
A curious coincidence of the death
of Vice President Hobart is' fonnd In
the fact that of the six vice president
who bare died . in office , four died
within a few days of the same day of
the month, the death of Mr. Hobart
being the 21st of November, 1899; that
of Mr. Wilson the 22d of November,
1875; that of Elbridge Gerry, Novem
ber 23, 1814, and that of Mr. Hendricks
November 25, 1885. The other two
vice presidents who died in office were
Clinton and King. The former died
April 20, 1812. and the latter April 17,
1853.
By law the succession to the presf.
dency of the United States in the event
of vacancy falls upon the vice presi
dent, and in the event of the hitter's
death, to the secretary of state, the
next in line being tbe secretary of the
treasury, then the secretary of war.
And down through the list of cabinet
officers in order of precedent fixed by
act of congress when the death of Vice
President Hendricks disclosed the
necessity of such a provision.
New York. Nov. 25 The scenes at
Carroll hall . yesterday when the re-
mainsol Mr. Hobart were lying in state
were very pathetic. Long before ths
time announced for the opening of the
Coon of the Hobart home to the pub
lic the crowd began to assemble, and
when the first rush toward the nal
entrance began 5.000 persons were
crowded into .. Ellison- and Carroll
streets. Lines were formed by
squad ot police, but the force was too
small to maintain order. Women
were In the majority. Fully 12,000
persona saw the remains in the four
hours they were exposed to view.
Paterson, N. J., Nov. 27. With ths
religions services of the Presbyterian
church and with the-diguity due to hia
high office, all that is mortal of Vice
President Hobart was committed

president,' secretary of state. Chief
Justice Fuller,', Secretary Hitchcock,
the sapreme coart judges, members of
the senate and house and the vice
president's personal friends filled tbe
